Gaining an inside edge in any competitive event can be a plus. And when it comes to betting on sports, this edge could mean the difference between beating the sportsbooks or taking a beating in your betting bankroll. Even the top handicappers in the world are constantly looking for that edge to help boost their overall winning percentage.
For over 44 years, Doc's Sports has been helping sports bettors gain that inside edge and manage their bankroll through their Unit Betting System by uncovering the top betting opportunities each and every week of the year. The following are this week's expert betting tips that feature a potential edge that just might tip the scales in your favor for some current sporting events.
Hawks Keep Delivering for Bettors
The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) is probably an afterthought for most sports bettors when it comes to college basketball, but you might want to take a closer look at the Monmouth Hawks as they get set to begin conference play this Friday night on the road against Canisius.
In this past Thanksgiving Holiday weekend's AdvoCare Invitational, they stunned the field with an improbable 70-68 upset of then No-17 Notre Dame as nine-point underdogs. Following a tight 73-70 loss to Dayton in the next round as eight-point underdogs, the Hawks bounced right back with an 83-73 upset of USC as 4.5-point underdogs in the third-place game.
On the year, Monmouth is now 4-2 straight up with a profitable 5-1 record against the spread. One of those early wins included an 84-81 upset on the road against UCLA as a 14-point underdog. Much of the team's recent success in last week's tournament can be attributed to the play of junior guard Justin Robinson, who tallied a total of 77 points in that three-game run.
The Tide is Set to Roll this Saturday
Alabama begins its postseason quest for another national title this Saturday as a 17.5-point favorite against Florida in this year's SEC Championship Game at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta. BetOnline Sportsbook has set the betting odds for the total in this game at 39.5.
The Crimson Tide have been on a roll lately with four straight wins against the spread by a combined 105 points. The Gators, on the other hand, will try and pick up the pieces from an ugly 27-2 loss to rival Florida State this past Saturday as 2.5-point home underdogs. They have now failed to cover in three of their last four games.
Looking back at some betting trends for the SEC title game, a team from the West Division has won the past seven conference championships, with the margin of victory reaching double-digits in five of those games. In 23 title matchups in the SEC, the total has gone "over" 14 of those games, including the last six games in a row.
When it comes to a head-to-head matchup between the two, Alabama has a four-game winning streak both SU and ATS, with the smallest margin of victory being 19 points.
New York vs. New York
This Wednesday night in the NHL, the New York Rangers will head to the Barclays Center in Brooklyn to face off against the New York Islanders. The current moneyline for this Metro Division Clash have the Rangers listed as +110 underdogs, with the Islanders set as -120 favorites. The total for the game has been set at five.
Going back over the past 13 meetings between these two city rivals, the road team has won 11 of those games. This will be the first meeting between the two at the Islanders' new ice rink since leaving Nassau Coliseum, so it will be interesting to see if a change in venue has any effect of the current betting trend.
Moving to this Sunday in the NFL, the New York Jets will be the designated road team in their inter-conference showdown against the New York Giants. The Jets have been listed as two-point favorites, with the total set at 45.
These two teams meet only once every four years. However, going all the way back to 1996, the Giants have won the last five meetings SU and they are 4-1 ATS. They have won three of the games as road underdogs, and the total has gone over in three of the five games.
Dogs Still Howling in the NFL
The NFL regular season rolls into the month of December, and this is usually the time of the year when the cream starts to rise to the top to separate the contenders from the pretenders. The problem this season is that there is quite a bit of middle ground among the teams battling for one of the 12 available playoff spots.
You can pencil in teams such as Carolina (11-0) and Arizona (9-2) in the NFC, while awarding a spot to New England (10-1), Cincinnati (9-2) and Denver (9-2) in the AFC, but everything else is pretty much up for grabs.
This could be the reason why the underdogs have had such a great run through the first 12 weeks. Straight up, the underdog has won 39.4 percent of the time, according to Covers' NFL league trends. This jumps to 42.1 percent when playing at home. When it comes to covering against the spread, teams closing as an underdog have cashed in 56.2 percent of the time with a record of 95-74-6. Betting home dogs has been slightly better with a 57.1 winning percentage.
