Betting on sports can be seen as both a science and an art. The science of breaking down a matchup based on empirical data and various key statistics is an integral part of the handicapping process, but sometimes all it takes in an inside edge to tip the betting scales in your favor. It is the art of finding that edge to improve your overall winning percentage.
For close to 45 years, Doc's Sports has been extremely successful at mastering both the science and the art of turning out some big winners for all the major sports. Their Unit Betting System has proven to be an excellent money management tool that takes full advantage of an "inside edge" when it is there. The following expert betting tips feature a potential edge that just might tip the scales in your favor for a big play this week.
A Magical Ride in Orlando
It has been quite some time since the Orlando Magic have made an impact in the NBA title race with their last trip to the Eastern Conference Finals coming in the 2009/2010 season. While it is highly doubtful they will make any kind of deep playoff run this season, either, the Magic have been a solid team with a straight-up 16-12 record in their first 28 games.
What has sports bettors excited about Orlando these days is a highly-profitable 11-2 record against the spread in their last 13 games. The Magic are a profitable 21-8 ATS this season overall and they have gone 10-5 ATS in 15 previous home games.
Last night's game kicked off a three-game homestand and includes games against Southeast Division rival Miami this upcoming Saturday and next Monday's game against the New Orleans Pelicans, who are still trying to bounce back from a slow start out of the gate.
Betting on the Thundering Herd
Marshall has been one of the top Mid-Major football programs in the country over the past few seasons with a straight-up record of 21-4 over its last 25 games. This season, the Conference USA's Thundering Herd finished with a SU record of 9-3 to work their way into the St. Petersburg Bowl against Connecticut this Saturday at Tropicana Field. BetOnline has listed Marshall as a four-point favorite, which could be a gift against a Huskies' team that barley qualified for a bowl at 6-6.
UConn plays out of the AAC and it comes into this game with a stout defense that allowed an average of just 19.8 points a game, but when it came to putting points on the board its average actually dropped lower than that to just 17.8 points a game, which is ranked 118th among 128 Division IA schools.
The Thundering Herd match up well on defense with a points-allowed average of 18.4 points, and they almost double up the Huskies when it comes to scoring with 32.6 points a game. What really makes Marshall attractive in this matchup is a 4-0 record ATS in its last four bowl games and a 12-4 record ATS in its last 16 nonconference games. Connecticut, on the other hand, is just 7-15 SU over its last 22 games and a costly 5-15-1 ATS in its last 21 games played outside its conference.
Riding the Redskins in the NFC East
Before the 2015 NFL regular season started, Bovada had set the futures odds that the Washington Redskins would win the NFC East Division title at +1400. The Dallas Cowboys were the favorites at +125, followed by Philadelphia at +180 and the New York Giants at +300.
Flash forward to Week 16 of the NFL regular season in a division where nothing went according to script this year. Bovada's current betting odds to win the NFC East with just two games remaining have Washington listed as a -140 favorite. The Eagles are next on the short list at +160 followed by the Giants at +700. The once-favored Cowboys are now 4-10 on the year and officially out of contention.
Going with Washington as the new favorite makes perfect sense considering that all the 7-7 Redskins have to do is beat the Eagles on the road this Saturday night as three-point underdogs to clinch the title. They are coming off a solid 35-25 victory against Buffalo as two-point home underdogs after beating Chicago 24-21 the week before as four-point underdogs on the road. Washington quarterback Kirk Cousins is coming off one of his best games of the year to bring a ton of momentum into Saturday night's showdown in Philly.
The Eagles, on the other hand, are coming off a lopsided 40-17 beatdown last Sunday night at the hands of Arizona as 3.5-point underdogs at home. They are now 6-8 and they would have to first get past Washington this week and then beat the Giants on the road next week to lay claim to the 2015 dubious NFC East crown.
New York is on life support in this division race at 6-8 after dropping four of its last five games in a late-season collapse. The Giants only shot at winning the division is to win both of their last two games and have Washington lose to the Eagles this week and to Dallas on the road in Week 17. Just to add some more weight to this sinking ship, their biggest scoring threat is wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. and he been suspended by the NFL for Sunday night's game against Minnesota.
