Sports bettors who are serious about maximizing their overall return on investment fully understand that the overall edge when it comes to actually betting on the games favors the sportsbooks. There is a reason these books are in business and flourishing year after year at the expense of the emotionally-driven betting public.
Doc's Sports has been working with serious sports bettors for close to 45 years to swing this edge in favor of our clients through the use of a Unit Betting System. Big-unit plays are released to take full advantage of a big "inside edge", while smaller plays reflect the proper confidence level for a matchup where the edge may not be that strong. The following expert betting tips feature a potential edge that just might tip the scales in your favor for a big play this week.
Has the Sun has Set in Phoenix?
Earlier in the NBA season, the Phoenix Suns were a solid bet with an 8-4 start against the spread through their first 12 games. Since the start of the month of December, this trend has completely reversed itself with a 5-11 record ATS over their past 16 games. This losing trend has been accelerated as the month has worn on with a 2-6 ATS mark in their last eight games.
The fact that the Suns' top player, Eric Bledsoe, is out for the foreseeable future with a knee injury has not helped the cause with just one straight up win amidst this same eight-game slide. Phoenix is now 12-21 SU on the year and sitting in 11th place in the Western Conference standings.
Things do not get any easier from here with a four-game road trip that starts with a matchup against San Antonio on Wednesday night followed by a trip to Oklahoma City on New Year's Eve. These two games could provide the perfect opportunity to take full advantage of a continued slide that could easily extend right into the New Year.
The Tar Heels are Burning Up the Court and the Total Line
The nonconference portion of this year's college basketball season is coming to a close, and one of the top betting teams over the past month or so has been the North Carolina Tar Heels. They started the week ranked No. 7 in the current AP Top 25, and they will open up play in the ACC this Wednesday night in a home game against Clemson.
Before you go out and bet on the Tar Heels to cover in this one as probable favorites, keep in mind that they are 2-3 ATS in their last five games. The solid bet with this team has been the "over" on the total line. Behind a potent offense that is averaging 86.3 points a game, the total has gone over in seven of their last eight games. North Carolina's scoring average during this same eight-game run has jumped to 90.5 points a game. Defensively, the Tar Heels are allowing an average of 70.7 points, and this average has ticked up as well to 72.7 points during the same eight-game span.
College Bowl Chalk Talk
As of this past Monday's college football action, half of the 40-game bowl schedule (not including the College Football Playoff Championship) was in the books, and the favorites have carved out the early edge for bettors with a 12-8 record ATS. The Mountain West has been the best betting conference at 4-1 ATS, and the biggest drain on the bankroll has been the ACC at 1-4 ATS.
Heading into the second half of the schedule starting on Tuesday, the favorites have built up a head of steam by covering in seven of the last 10 bowl games. Looking ahead to this Wednesday's Belk Bowl between the ACC's North Carolina State Wolfpack and the SEC's Mississippi State Bulldogs, this could be a perfect opportunity to cash in on this trend.
BetOnline has listed the Bulldogs as 6.5-point favorites in this matchup. While they went 8-4 SU this season with a pedestrian 7-5 record against the spread, they did manage to cover in four of the six games they closed as favorites. Conversely, NC State failed to cover in all four games it closed as an underdog as part of an overall record of 7-5 SU and 6-6 ATS. The Wolfpack have also failed to cover in their last four games against the SEC.
