2014 World Cup Handicapping: Europe or South America Odds to Win
by Strike Point Sports - 4/23/2014
One of the more fun aspects of a sporting event such as the World Cup is the plethora of betting options that one has to play with, both on a specific match as well as futures or unique tournaments odds.
With all due respect to competent teams such as the United States, Mexico, Japan, South Korea and the Ivory Coast, the winner of this summer's World Cup is coming from either Europe or South America. These two continents are simply too loaded with overwhelming talented teams not to produce the winner.
With that in mind, we give you the current odds for each to win the 2014 World Cup.
Europe -110
South America -110
It doesn't get much more even than that. Now we take a look at each continent's best prospects and try and find some wiggle room to move one ahead of the other, even if just slightly.
Brazil are the host. They are also the tournament favorites. Thus, it's hard not to stop the conversation there. But now consider the single best argument for a South American team to win this summer: no European nation has ever won a World Cup in the Americas. They are 0-4 on South American soil and 0-3 on North American soil. Doughnut.
That statistic is even further magnified when you realize that South American teams are a perfect 7-for-7 in winning the World Cup in the Americas. Yep. All seven occasions European nations failed to win, it was a South American team that lifted the trophy.
This bodes well for the trio of Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay.
However if any country can crack this foreboding trend it is Spain, a side who have won three straight major international titles (Euro 2008, 2010 World Cup, Euro 2012) and will surely have all the confidence in the world to make it four in a row.
Toss in the likes of Germany as another plausible Euro contender, who they themselves have proven to be amongst the most consistent on the biggest stage. The Germans finished third at the 2006 World Cup, second at Euro 2008, third at the 2010 World Cup and semifinalists at Euro 2012. For my money Germany are the most talented European side at the World Cup Finals in Brazil and hold the best chance to finally get over the hump.
Europe also boasts Belgium, thought to be the true dark horse and potential Cinderella of this summer's tournament. Classy Italy and hungry-for-success England also wait in the wings for chances to prove themselves on the big stage.
We'd also be doing a supreme injustice to Argentina by not giving them a bit more hype. Even though continental rivals Brazil are getting all the headlines as favorites and host, Argentina can make a case as the most talented attack-minded group of players in the field. Argentina will no doubt be a catalyst for this race, and I am sure they will make waves attempting to set the pace with their aggressive, offensive brand of football that will surely win over neutral supporters in June and July.
Certainly the half dozen or so nations we've mentioned all will be vying for a chance to hoist the trophy and lay claim to the title as world's best.
