Weekly Q&A with Doc's Sports Expert Handicapper Raphael Esparza
by Doc's Sports - 3/18/2014
When it comes to March Madness and college basketball, Doc's Sports has earned a reputation in the sports betting business as being one of the top selection services around. We have been able to stay at the top of our game for well over four decades by consistently providing a loyal customer base with winning picks for all the major sports. A good deal of our success and longevity in this very competitive industry hinges on the ability to surround ourselves with some of the best handicappers in the game.
Now in his eighth year with Doc's, Raphael Esparza continues to be one of the shining stars on a very talented team. He cut his teeth as an expert handicapper during a long and illustrious career working behind the counter of some of the biggest sportsbooks in Las Vegas. Previously known as The Vegas Informer, Raphael once held the highly-prestigious position of Director of the Race and Sports Book for MGM Grand's Aria.
He decided to retire from the sportsbook industry this past summer to devote even more time to his craft. His primary job these days is to tap into a vast network of key contacts that he established over these many years. The goal now is to add an even sharper "inside edge" to all the sports selections that he releases. What really separates Raphael's selection service from the rest of the competition is his unique ability to handicap a wide array of sporting events, including the WNBA, horse racing, boxing, professional tennis and soccer leagues all around the globe.
Doc's Sports set up a weekly Q&A with Raphael to drill a bit deeper into this "inside edge" in order to provide our readers with exclusive insight into some of the hottest trending topics in the sports betting industry today. What better source could you find than someone living and working in the undisputed sports gambling capital of the world? The following is this week's discussion.
Doc's Sports : March Madness is in full swing, so we decided to focus this week's discussion entirely on the 2014 NCAA Tournament. Starting with the No. 1 team in the nation as well as the top seed in this tournament, do you have the Florida Gators coming out of the South Region as a Final Four team, or is there someone else primed to knock them off?
RE: I do believe that Florida is clearly the best team in this region as far as balance and consistency on both ends of the court. The Gators have avoided the highs and lows that have plagued some of the other top teams in this bracket, and this pays off with a trip to the Final Four. My sleeper team in this region would be New Mexico as I have the Lobos beating Kansas in the Round of 32.
Doc's Sports: Moving onto the East Region, the surprising Virginia Cavaliers earned the No. 1 seed by winning both the ACC regular-season and this past weekend's tournament title. Most of the experts are jumping on No. 4 seed Michigan State's bandwagon to win this region, but what are your thoughts on the situation for this intriguing piece of the bracket?
RE : Virginia is probably deserving of the No. 1 seed given its accomplishments, but the Cavaliers will be lucky to get past Memphis in their second game. Regardless of what happens in the other half of the bracket, this is Michigan State's region to lose.
The Spartans are healthy and peaking at just the right time, which spells bad news for everyone else trying to win the East. Do not be surprised if it comes down to a Michigan State vs. Iowa State matchup in the Elite 8.
Doc's Sports: The undefeated Wichita Shockers at 34-0 were awarded the No. 1 seed in the Midwest Region, but most sportsbooks have them listed as third-favorites to win this region after No. 4 Louisville and No. 3 Duke. Do the Shockers have what it takes to get past both of these perennial powers to make a return trip to the Final Four?
RE: I half-hope I am wrong, but the Shockers' incredible run ends against Louisville in the Elite 8. However, I am not ready to sit back and hand the keys to the Midwest Region title to the Cardinals. I think Duke is primed to make a return trip to the Final Four behind a big effort form Jabari Parker and Rodney Hood.
Doc's Sports : The final region in this tournament is the West, with Arizona holding the top seed. The Wildcats have been one of the top teams in the nation all season long, but is the loss to UCLA in the Pac-12 Tournament Championship a serious red flag to a run to the Final Four out of this region?
RE: Arizona is still the best team in the West. But coming off a bad loss, its road to the Final Four just got a bit tougher. The Wildcats will be tested early against Oklahoma State, and they will most likely have to find a way to get past Wisconsin in the Elite 8.
Do not go to sleep on teams like Baylor and San Diego State in this region as either team is more than capable of making things interesting for anyone they meet. When the smoke does clear in this corner of the bracket, I am still sticking with the Wildcats to come out on top.
Doc's Sports : Now that you have given us your thoughts on which four teams should advance to Arlington, Texas in a couple of weeks to continue play for this year's national title in men's college basketball, which of the four do you have cutting down the nets on Monday, April 7?
RE: I have Florida advancing past Michigan State on the left side of the bracket, and I have the Blue Devils knocking out Arizona in the other semifinal contest. While I have never been a huge Duke fan over the years, I do have Coach K's bunch cutting down the nets when it is all said and done.
My biggest prediction of this whole tournament it that Jabari Parker earns the MVP award after turning in a monster performance, and he uses it as a gateway to end up being the No. 1 pick in this year's NBA Draft.
