Weekly Q&A with Doc's Sports Expert Handicapper Raphael Esparza
by Doc's Sports - 3/11/2014
Doc's Sports continues to remain one of the top sources for quality selections when it comes to wagering on sports. We have been able to stay at the top of our game for well over four decades by consistently providing a loyal customer base with winning picks for all the major sports. Right now we are gearing up for March Madness in what we expect to be one of our biggest months of the year. All of this success has been made possible by a strong commitment to surrounding ourselves with some of the best handicappers in the game.
One of those shining stars at Doc's for the past eight years has been Raphael Esparza. He honed his craft during a long and illustrious career working behind the counter of some of the biggest sportsbooks in Las Vegas. Previously known as The Vegas Informer, Raphael was able to work his way to the highly-prestigious position of Director of the Race and Sports Book for MGM Grand's Aria.
Last August he decided to call it a career in the sportsbook industry to have more time to tap into a vast network of key contacts that he established over these many years. The goal was to further enhance an "inside edge" that has served him so well. What makes Raphael's selection service so unique verses the competition is the willingness to handicap a wide array of sporting events, including the WNBA, horse racing, boxing, professional tennis and soccer leagues all around the globe.
Doc's Sports has established a weekly Q&A with Raphael to provide our readers with exclusive access to this "inside edge" through a series of questions designed to provide valuable insight into some of the hottest trending topics in the sports betting industry today. It would be hard to find a better source than someone living and working in the undisputed sports gambling capital of the world? The following is this week's discussion.
Doc's Sports : It's Championship Week in men's college basketball with conference tournaments in full swing. The ACC Tournament gets underway this Wednesday with Virginia, Syracuse, Duke and North Carolina penciled in as the top four seeds. Which team do you have cutting down the nets in this conference come Sunday afternoon?
RE: I think the ACC title game comes down to a third matchup between Syracuse and Duke. Virginia has me leery with that bad loss to Maryland in its season finale, and the Blue Devils should take down North Carolina at a neutral site. I would then go with Duke in the Finals as it has just too much offensive firepower for the Orange to keep pace.
Doc's Sports: The Big Ten should be another exciting tournament with as many as five or six legitimate contenders in the running to win this year. Michigan already won the regular-season title, so can the Wolverines pull off the sweep, or do you have another team in mind for this tournament title?
RE : Despite its stunning loss to Nebraska in its final regular-season game, I still think that Wisconsin is the team to beat this week in a single-elimination situation. The Badgers' size and strength up front should be enough carry them past any team they face on the way to the Big Ten Tournament title.
Doc's Sports: All the focus in the NBA's Eastern Conference this season has been on Indiana and Miami. While these two rivals have gone a combined 1-7 in their last eight games, the next four teams in the standings are a combined 29-11 in their last 40 games. That list includes Toronto, Chicago, Washington and Brooklyn, so when you break down these teams does any of them have a chance to derail a Pacers vs. Heat matchup in the conference finals?
RE: I was at the NBA All-Star Game last month, and all I heard was that Chicago is the kind of team that nobody wants to face in the playoffs. The Bulls' balanced attack and relentless defense presents matchup problems for both Miami and Indiana, and I think that Chicago could easily take either of these teams to a seventh game in this year's playoffs.
Doc's Sports : The recent NBA trade deadline came and went with little fanfare, but last week in the NHL there was some significant player movement when that league's deadline rolled around. Were there any "game changing" trades that could have a major impact on a team's fate in this year's Stanley Cup Playoffs?
RE: I was actually surprised with how many deals did get done in the NHL involving big-named players as that is usually not the case. Goalie Tim Thomas going to Dallas automatically makes the Stars a better team, but the unsettling events of Rich Peverley's sudden collapse could have a lingering impact on this team. I also like the Rangers' chance to better compete with Pittsburgh in the East with the addition of Martin St. Louis from Tampa Bay.
Doc's Sports : Opening Day of a new MLB season is less than three weeks away, so starting in the NL East, what are your predictions for this division?
RE: The NL East will once again be a two-team race between Atlanta and Washington. Last season was a classic case of one team overachieving while the other failed to live up to expectations. Look for the Nationals to bounce back with a much more consistent effort that leads them all the way to the division title.
