Weekly Q&A with Doc's Sports Expert Handicapper Raphael Esparza
by Doc's Sports - 10/21/2014
It's late October, and Doc's Sports continues a successful run through another season of football just like we have done over the past four decades in the sports selection industry. We have been able to remain at the top of our game for 43 years, and one of the biggest contributing factors to this unprecedented level of success has been the ability to surround ourselves with some of the top expert handicappers in the business. One of the top performers at Doc's for the past eight years has been Raphael Esparza. He was able to develop his handicapping skills during a long and illustrious career behind the counter of some of the biggest sportsbooks in Las Vegas in which he became known as the Vegas Sports Informer.
Raphael was able to rise all the way up the ranks to the prestigious position of Director of the Race and Sports Book for MGM Grand's Aria until his retirement from the Las Vegas sportsbook industry in August of 2013.
He may have retired from the sportsbook industry, but Raphael remains hard at work in Las Vegas and part-time in New Orleans building and expanding a vast network of relationships with some of the biggest and most influential insiders in the sports betting industry today. These professionals know the gaming industry inside and out, and he has been able to incorporate this "inside edge" into all the selections he releases.
What really makes his handicapping service so unique is the ability to provide winning picks for all the major sports as well as offering selection packages for sports such as the WNBA, horse racing, boxing, professional tennis and soccer leagues all around the globe. Recently, he has gone as far as offering picks for professional wrestling and high school football.
Doc's Sports has been sitting down with Raphael for a regular Q&A for quite some time now. Our goal is to gain access to that Las Vegas "inside edge" by tapping into his expert insight for some of the hottest trending topics in the sports betting industry today. We have found that there is no better source than someone that is a true "insider" in the undisputed sports gambling capital of the world. The following is this week's conversation.
Doc's Sports: The biggest game on this Saturday's college schedule sends Ole Miss on the road as a 3.5-point favorite, at most sportsbooks, against LSU. Is this a potential trap game for the No. 3 team in the nation or do the Rebels survive yet another stern test in the SEC?
RE: This will be a tough test for Ole Miss as Tiger Stadium is never an easy place to win a game, but I would still have to lean towards the Rebels covering in this one as long as the spread does not reach four or more points.
Doc's Sports: The NFL regular season has been filled with surprises, but none bigger than 5-1 Arizona's growing lead in the NFC West over the struggling 49ers and Seahawks. How do you see this division race playing out over the remainder of the season?
RE : There is still quite a bit of football to be played this season, so I am not all that concerned about the Seahawks or 49ers current form right now. As far as the long-term title race in this division, I would still go with San Francisco coming out on top given its slight edge on the defensive side of the ball.
Doc's Sports : San Diego is coming off a tough loss to Kansas City, while Denver just crushed San Francisco. These two AFC West rivals will now meet this Thursday night with first place in the division on the line. The Broncos have been rolling over everyone lately, so do you keep riding this money train again in this matchup?
RE: The Broncos have been killing the books lately with these blowout wins that keep going "over" the closing total line. Until they show me something different, I would continue riding the Broncos on both the side and total betting odds starting with this Thursday night's division showdown again San Diego.
Doc's Sports: The 2014 World Series gets underway on Tuesday night with the San Francisco Giants on the road against the upstart Kansas City Royals. Can you give your prediction for which one of these teams will go on to win this year's Fall Classic?
RE: The sportsbooks are set up to make money on this series no matter which team wins, given the way the series prices and futures odds have been set so tight. I would have to give San Francisco the overall edge primarily due to its past performance on baseball's biggest stage, but my heart is pulling for the Royals to ride this incredible run all the way to a world title.
Doc's Sports : In a recent post in your blog, Straight Talk Bet, you jumped into the political arena with some picks for the upcoming November elections. How do you even go about handicapping events such as this?
RE: I actually put quite of bit of research into the politics of each election I covered. One of the biggest factors affecting my actual selections was the results and any recent polls. History has shown us that the favorite in any political election on or around Oct. 1 has an almost an 85 to 90 percent chance of winning on Election Day.
