Weekly Q&A with Doc's Sports Expert Handicapper Raphael Esparza
by Doc's Sports - 10/14/2014
As the football season wears on in both the college ranks and the pros, Doc's Sports remains at the top of our game with our selection packages. We have be at this for over 43 years, and one of the main reasons that Doc's remains the leader in the sports selection industry has been our commitment to surrounding ourselves with a top-notch group of expert handicappers that are among the best in their field. One of the best of the best at Doc's for the past eight years has been Raphael Esparza. He actually cut his teeth as an expert handicapper during a long and illustrious career behind the counter of some of the biggest sportsbooks in Las Vegas.
He was formally known as the Vegas Sports Informer during this time and he rose all the way up the ranks to the prestigious position of Director of the Race and Sports Book for MGM Grand's Aria until his retirement from the Las Vegas sportsbook industry in August of 2013.
Raphael may have retired from the sportsbook industry, but he remains hard at work expanding his network of relationships with some of the biggest and most influential insiders in Las Vegas. These industry professionals know the gaming industry inside and out, and he has been able to incorporate this "inside edge" into all the selections he releases.
What makes Raphael's handicapping service so unique is the ability to provide winning picks for all the major sports as well as offering selection packages for sports such as the WNBA, horse racing, boxing, professional tennis and soccer leagues all around the globe. Recently, he has gone as far as offering picks for professional wrestling and high school football.
Doc's Sports sits down with Raphael for a regular Q&A to gain access to that Las Vegas "inside edge". Each and every week we tap into his expert insight into some of the hottest trending topics in the sports betting industry today. We have found that there is no better source than someone that is a true "insider" in the undisputed sports gambling capital of the world. The following is this week's conversation.
Doc's Sports: Dallas is without a doubt one of the hottest teams in the NFL heading into Week 7 with a five-game winning streak. In the past you had mentioned that sometimes the betting public in Las Vegas has a tendency to go against the Cowboys, so where did all the money end up last Sunday after their stunning upset in Seattle?
RE: That was the case again on Sunday, and the money that came back to the books in the Cowboys win went a long way towards helping them squeeze out a small overall gain on the day after going down big in the early games.
Doc's Sports: Heading into this week's NFL games, can you give us one or two games that might make the cut as one of your potential selections?
RE : I actually like Dallas again giving the five to 5.5 points to the Giants at home. I expected this line to open around six or 6.5 points given the way that both teams looked last week. My other pick would probably be Denver only giving up seven points to a San Francisco team that is lucky to be 4-2 in my book.
Doc's Sports : The state of Mississippi continues to dominate the headlines in college football by holding down two of the top three spots in the national polls. Do you see both Mississippi State and Ole Miss remaining undefeated until they meet in the final game of the regular season on Nov. 29?
RE: Both teams have a few tough tests left on the slate before their annual rivalry, but I do like Mississippi State's chances to run the table a bit more than Ole Miss. The Bulldogs still have a tough road trip to Tuscaloosa in mid-November to get past, but the Rebels will have to get past LSU and Arkansas on the road and Auburn at home to remain perfect on the year.
Doc's Sports : Each week in your blog, Straight Bet Talk, you post a free weekly pick for either college football or the NFL. Can you give us your process for those picks in relation to ones you release as part of you selection packages?
RE: I normally only release a few games for both college and the NFL in any given week as I am a firm believer in quality over quantity when it comes to betting on sports. The first thing I do is create a short list of games that I am tracking, and when it comes time to release my actual picks, I will usually make my least confident play the free one in my blog.
Doc's Sports: A new season of hockey in the NHL got underway last week. From what you have seen so far do you have any early thoughts on some teams that might be a good bet over their next few games.
RE: So far I have been impressed with the New York Islanders in the East and the Minnesota Wild in the West. Both teams are playing solid defense right out of the gate, which is one of my top keys for betting a team. A strong defense also opens up some possibilities for "under" plays on the total line depending on the actual matchup.
