Weekly Q&A with Doc's Sports Expert Handicapper Raphael Esparza
by Doc's Sports - 12/16/2014
An extensive college bowl season with a first-ever College Football Playoff gets underway this Saturday, just as the pieces for the NFL postseason continue to fall into place. This makes it the perfect time to jump on board Doc's Sports football money train that has been churning out winners all season long. We have been putting together winning selection packages for all the major sports for the last 43 years with the help of some of the top expert handicappers in the game, and one of the best of the best for the past eight years has been the former Vegas Sports Informer Raphael Esparza.
He cut his teeth as an expert handicapper during a long and illustrious career behind the counter of some of the biggest sportsbooks in Las Vegas, and at his pinnacle; Raphael held the prestigious position of Director of the Race and Sports Book for MGM Grand's Aria until his retirement in 2013.
He may be retired from the Las Vegas sportsbook industry, but he remains hard at work developing and expanding an already vast network of relationships with some of the biggest and most influential Las Vegas insiders in the sports betting industry today. These professionals know the gaming world inside and out, and Raphael has made savvy bettors a small fortune over the years by incorporating this "insider's edge" into all the sports selections he releases.
One of the most unique aspects of his expert handicapping service is selection packages for such sports as the WNBA, horse racing, boxing, professional tennis and soccer leagues all around the globe. Recently, he has gone as far as to offer picks for professional wrestling, high school football and betting odds from the world of entertainment. Rest assured that if Las Vegas posts odds for it, he will handicap it.
Doc's and Raphael have been engaged in a weekly Q&A for quite some time now to not only delve deeper the Las Vegas betting scene but also to discuss some of the hottest trending sports betting topics of the day. We have found that there is no better source than someone that is a true "insider" in the undisputed sports gambling capital of the world. The following is this week's conversation.
Doc's Sports: The Las Vegas books have been killing it all season long in the NFL with underdogs covering against the spread. Given the fact that last week the "under" on the total line prevailed in the majority of the games, what kind of impact did this have on the overall take in town?
RE: This time of year the entire handle in all the sportsbooks is down given the holiday season, but you will actually see money move towards the under in games where the betting public believes that weather could have a major impact on the outcome. The biggest boost to the books of having most of the games staying under is breaking up parlays with favorites and overs.
Doc's Sports: Following Week 15's results, three of the four division titles in the AFC have already been claimed, but the battle for the AFC North crown rages on. Cincinnati currently has the half-game edge over both Pittsburgh and Baltimore, but which team do you have ending up on top at the end of the regular season?
RE: I would have to give the edge to Pittsburgh right now with home games against Kansas City and Cincinnati. The Steelers have actually been playing much more consistent than earlier in the season, while Bengals remain a tough team to figure out on a week-to-week basis. It also does not help that Cincinnati is going to have its hands full this Monday night with Denver coming to town.
Doc's Sports : Last week in your blog, Straight Bet Talk, you released another round of pro wrestling picks for this past Sunday's WWE TLC event on pay-per-view. You have been making money for your wresting customers all year long, so how did your picks fare this time around?
RE: These pro wrestling picks have been a regular money train over the course of the last two WWE PPV events. Earlier in the fall I went a perfect 4-0 with my selections, and this past Sunday night I hit on seven of the eight picks I made. Right now, pro wrestling probably has the highest winning percentage of all the sports I handicap.
Doc's Sports : You will usually offer a free NFL pick each week in your blog as well. Do you have your eye on any games that might make the cut from Week 16's slate?
RE : I have my eye on both the Sunday night game with a lean towards Arizona at home getting eight points and Denver on the road Monday night minus the three and half points against the Bengals. As a mentioned earlier, my confidence level in Cincinnati is not all that high, and the Broncos remain highly motivated in their quest to lock up the top seed in the conference.
Doc's Sports : The college football bowl season gets underway this Saturday with close to 40 games on that schedule. Do you have any inside handicapping tips that you rely on when betting on bowl games as a whole?
RE: One of the biggest factors is the potential impact that a coaching change may have on a particular team. For example, Mississippi State losing its defensive coordinator to Florida could have a negative impact on that side of the ball against Georgia Tech, while the addition of Barry Alvarez as Wisconsin's interim head coach could have a positive impact in the Badgers' game against Auburn.
Another factor is where the game is played. Exotic locations such as Hawaii and the Bahamas can impact a less-disciplined team. The final factor is what is a team's motivation level coming into its game? I could see TCU and/or Baylor having a tough time getting up for their games in light of the playoff snub.
