Tracking the Wizards: NBA Picks and Handicapping for Washington Basketball
by Dave Schwab - 11/14/2014
The new NBA season offers some golden opportunities to wager on the games. In an effort to prove the value of specialization as a viable betting strategy, I am exclusively handicapping the Washington Wizards all season long. To help prove the value of this approach, I will also be releasing weekly free picks with the use of Doc's Sports Unit Betting System. My main goal is to earn a long-term profit betting Wizards' games this year.
Doc's will be posting my weekly free picks for the games, so be sure to check their homepage to follow along with my progress. Washington is off to a solid start in the Southeast Division, and it is expected to be one of the top teams in the NBA's Eastern Conference this season, so be sure to jump aboard the Wizards' money train with my free picks..
Washington Wizards Free Picks, Odds and Predictions
Saturday, Nov. 15, 7 p.m. EST (Verizon Center)
Washington continues an extended four-game homestand this Friday night when it welcomes the Orlando Magic to town in the second meeting between these two Southeast Division rivals this season. Tip-off from the Verizon Center is slated for 7 p.m., and the game will be available on NBA League Pass.
Orlando has won three of its last five games straight up, and it has now covered against the spread in its last four contests with Wednesday's 97-95 victory over New York as a 6.5-point underdog on the road. The total went "over" the 191-point closing line, and it has now gone over in the Magic's last four outings. They will now return home for a Friday night matchup against Milwaukee before making the trip to Washington.
So far so good with the Wizards' current home stand after posting a 107-103 victory against Detroit on Wednesday night. They did fail to cover as six-point favorites, and the total went over the 192-point closing line. Washington is now 6-2 SU on the year with an even 4-4 record ATS. The total has gone over in five of the eight games.
Orlando at Washington Betting Storylines
The Magic bounced back from a 0-4 start that included a 105-98 loss to Washington on Oct. 30 as 4.5-point home underdogs to run their record to 3-6 through their first nine games. They still have a number of issues with an offense that is ranked 22nd in the NBA in scoring with an average of 95.9 points complementing a defense that is allowing 100.8 points a game. However, all things considered for a team that won just 23 games last season, Orlando has played better than expected.
Center Nikola Vucevic has been the big story on offense in the early going with a team-high 18.7 points and 11.9 rebounds a game. Evan Fournier has also jumped out to a strong start with 18.2 points a game while shooting an impressive 51.4 percent from both the field and three-point range. The Magic, as a team, are shooting a solid 46.7 percent from the floor, and they are ranked 10th in the league in rebounds (43.0).
Washington currently leads the Southeast Division by a game over Miami on the strength of a perfect 3-0 record at home. It has averaged 103.7 points in those three games at the Verizon Center as opposed to an overall scoring average of 98.8 points that is ranked 18th in the NBA. The one constant whether playing at home or on the road has been a strong defensive effort that is holding opponents to an average of 96.9 points, which is ranked ninth in the NBA.
The Wizards' success in both this game and the entire season ahead will continue to revolve around the play of John Wall. He leads the team in points (20.0), assists (9.0) and steals (2.6) while shooting 44 percent from the field. The one weak spot in his game is shooting the ball from the outside with a 22.2 percent effort from 3-point range. The entire team has been weak in that department with a 33.1 shooting percentage from beyond the arc. Marcin Gortat is the second-leading scorer with 14 points and he leads the team in rebounds with 9.4 a game.
Orlando at Washington NBA Betting Odds and Key Trends
BetOnline has opened Washington as a 9.5-point home favorite for Saturday night's division matchup against Orlando. The total for this game has been set at 191.5.
The Magic are 8-15-2 ATS in their last 25 road games, but more recently they have covered in four of the last five games on the road. The total has stayed under in 10 of their last 14 road games.
The Wizards are 15-8 ATS in their last 23 games overall, but they are 1-5 ATS in their last six home games. The total has gone over in four of their last five games at home.
Head-to-head in this division matchup, Washington has won the last five games SU, and it is 9-2-1 ATS in the last 12 meetings. The total has gone over in four of the last six meetings at the Verizon Center.
Orlando at Washington Free NBA Picks and Betting Predictions
Orlando's current form has improved since opening day. However, the Magic's past betting trends against the Wizards coupled with the fact that they will come into this game on short rest sets up the perfect scenario to go big against them on Saturday. So much so, that I am going with a 5-unit play on a well-rested Washington team covering the 9.5-point spread in a rather easy victory at home.
5-Unit Play- Take Washington (-9.5) over Orlando
