This Week in Sports Betting, A-Z
by Ricky Dimon - 1/21/2014
A. Erin Andrews. Richard Sherman had crazy look in his eye and a crazy sound in his voice during his postgame interview following Seattle’s NFC Championship win over San Francisco. Andrews handled it like a champ and looked good doing it. Sherman did neither. Sherman is +3000 at Sportsbook.ag to win Super Bowl MVP; Peyton Manning is a +110 favorite.
B. Brawl. The Calgary Flames and Vancouver Canucks brawled two seconds into their game on Sunday. In the first five minutes, a total of 142 penalty minutes were racked up, and eight players were ejected. Canucks’ head coach John Tortorella was subsequently suspended 15 games for an altercation outside the Flames’ dressing room during the first intermission. Calgary coach Bob Hartley was fined $25,000.
C. Clayton Kershaw. Payday! Kershaw signed a seven-year, $215 million deal with the Dodgers last week. It is the richest contract for a pitcher in the history of MLB, and his $30.7 million per year is the most annual money ever for a baseball player. Carbon Sports has the Dodgers as +550 favorites to win the World Series.
D. Doug Baldwin. Baldwin did not take kindly to the notion held by ESPN analysts and former NFL star receivers Cris Carter and Keyshawn Johnson that he and the other healthy Seattle wideouts were appetizers as opposed to a main course. Not only did he blast Carter and Johnson, but Baldwin also made six receptions for 106 yards in the Seahawks’ 23-17 win over the 49ers. No other pass-catcher for either team had more than 53 yards.
E. Samuel Eto’o. It’s not that hard to beat Manchester United these days, but Eto’o did it in spectacular style on Sunday. Chelsea’s striker led his team to victory by scoring all three of its goals in a 3-1 home win. The Blues are two points back of English Premier League-leading Arsenal, while seventh-place Man U is 14 points out. Chelsea is +250 at BetOnline Sportsbook to win the EPL title; Manchester City is an even-money favorite.
F. Foot fault. Rory McIlroy, now engaged to tennis star Caroline Wozniacki, made a tennis reference by tweeting “Foot fault.....” after he was assessed a two-stroke penalty for an illegal drop at an event last week in Abu Dhabi. McIlroy ended up tying for a second with Phil Mickelson behind someone named Pablo Larrazabal. How many shots back were they? You guessed it: one. At Bovada Sportsbook, McIlroy is the +800 second choice behind Tiger Woods to win the Masters.
G. Genie Bouchard. Everyone’s dreaming of Genie right now. The 19-year-old has the looks and the game, and she is through to the semifinals of the Australian Open. The only thing she has done wrong this fortnight is answer “Justin Bieber” when asked after her quarterfinal win on Tuesday whom she would choose if she could date anyone in the world. That response was greeted with a chorus of boos from the Rod Laver Arena faithful. TopBet has Bouchard as a +300 underdog in her semifinal match against Li Na.
H. Aaron Hernandez. It was a bad week for his former team, but it was an even worse week for the former football player. Already awaiting trial for the death of Odin Lloyd, Hernandez has now been implicated in a 2012 double-murder in Boston.
I. Farmers Insurance Open. After skipping the Hawaiian swing, Tiger is back this week to kick off his 2014 campaign. To say Torrey Pines, site of the upcoming tournament, is not a bad place for Tiger to make his season debut would be an understatement. The world No. 1 has won eight times at Torrey—this event on seven occasions and also the 2008 U.S. Open. A ninth title would set an all-time record for one player on one course. Tiger is a +250 favorite at Bovada Sportsbook to win the tournament.
J. Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. Tsonga reportedly forgot his Australian Open player credential on Monday and had to buy a day pass to get into the grounds. Perhaps he would have been better off not going in at all. The Frenchman promptly got blown out of his fourth-round match by Roger Federer.
K. Kevin Ollie. Ollie earned his first ejection as Connecticut’s head coach when he got tossed from last Saturday’s 76-64 home loss to Louisville for arguing a non-call. UConn is still 14-4 overall and has won three of its last four games, but it is a mediocre 2-3 in the Big East. The Huskies are -12.5 home favorites over Temple on Tuesday, per Sportsbook.
L. Lolo Jones. If you recall Jones being a hard-luck Olympic hurdler, you are correct. However, she also appears to be an Olympic bobsledder. Jones was named to the USA’s bobsled team for Sochi last week. Only time will tell if Jones improves her team’s medaling chances, but definitely helps the foursome in the looks department.
M. Matt Prater. It has been a rather decent season for Prater, who kicked an NFL-record 64-yard field goal back in December. Now he finds himself in the Super Bowl after going 4-for-4 on field-goal attempts in Denver’s AFC Championship win over New England, including one kick from 54 yards out. The Broncos are -125 favorites, according to the money line at 5Dimes Sportsbook.
N. Navorro Bowman. Legs just aren’t supposed to go in that direction. Had the 49ers won, they would have been without Bowman and offensive guard Mike Iupati in New York. Both were injured against the Seahawks, and not surprisingly an MRI confirmed that the linebacker suffered a torn ACL and MCL.
O. Omaha. Outside of Denver, nobody can be happier than the folks of Omaha, Neb. that Manning and company are in the Super Bowl. The Broncos’ signal-caller has shouted “Omaha” prior to snaps more than 75 times in two playoff games, giving the city a ton of pub. In return, Nebraska business donated $800 to Manning’s Peyback Foundation for each “Omaha” shout during the AFC Championship. Thirty-one such calls earned a cool $24,800.
P. Jeremy Pruitt. Pruitt went a nice one-for-one in National Championships won as defensive coordinator at Florida State. But he is gone after just a single season, having accepted the same position with the Georgia Bulldogs. Pruitt said upon his arrival in Athens that he had been waiting 11 years to work with Mark Richt since first meeting the Dawgs’ head coach. Georgia is +2500 to win next season’s National Championship, according to Bovada Sportsbook.
Q. Jonathan Quick. The U.S. men’s hockey team won’t be the most talented in Sochi, but it may have some feistiness to it. Quick and upcoming teammate Jimmy Howard had a shoving match when the Kings and Red Wings squared off last weekend. Quick’s Kings lost the game 3-2 in a shootout, but he has a much better shot than Howard at winning the USA starting job. L.A. is a -125 road favorite over Columbus on Tuesday, per Carbon Sports.
R. Rehab. Dennis Rodman is in it, and Bieber maybe should be in it. Fresh off a trip to North Korea, where he had an epic alcohol-related meltdown, Rodman checked himself in earlier this week. As for Bieber, he is reportedly borderline addicted to sizzurp. Word on the street is that he also spent $75K at a Miami strip club on Monday night. Good times.
S. Serena Williams. The world No. 1 and heavy pre-tournament favorite to win the Aussie Open is out after falling to Ana Ivanovic in the fourth round. In fact, both initial favorites are gone as world No. 2 Novak Djokovic succumbed to Stanislas Wawrinka in a five-setter on Tuesday. BookMaker has Victoria Azarenka and Rafael Nadal as +112 and -109 favorites, respectively.
T. Thunder. Oklahoma City has won three in a row and is within one game of first place in the Western Conference at 31-10. An on-fire Kevin Durant has scored at least 30 points in seven straight games, and he went off for 54 in a 127-121 over Golden State last Friday night. The Thunder are -6.5 home favorites over Portland on Tuesday, according to BookMaker.
U. Rachel Uchitel. Uchitel, famous for allegedly being Tiger’s first mistress, had her second divorce finalized last week. If she has her sights set on Tiger again, as reported, she might want to think again. It’s hard to imagine Tiger being dumb enough to make the same mistakes twice. After all, he was schooled at Stanford…. Then again, so was Richard Sherman.
V. Villanova. The Wildcats won’t last long in their new No. 4 ranking, which they reached on Monday after improving to 16-1 and 5-0 in the Big East. ‘Nova suffered its first conference loss earlier this week, getting destroyed by Creighton 96-68 at home. The Bluejays drained an incredible 21 3-pointers in the process.
W. Shaun White. To the surprise of nobody, the Flying Tomato won the final qualifier on Sunday to book his spot on the U.S. Olympic team for the halfpipe. White is looking for a third straight gold medal in snowboarding’s premier event, but beware: it’s a competition that involves judging, and any such competition in Russia is going to be a risky proposition.
X. XLVIII. Denver Broncos vs. Seattle Seahawks? Who ya got? WagerWeb has the Broncos as -2.5 favorites.
Y. Nick Young. Young has been doing work for the Los Angeles Lakers this season, especially of late. The 6-foot-7 small forward’s points-per-game average is up to 16.7 thanks to having scored at least 28 points in three of his last four games and at least 29 in each of his last two. Young went for 31 to go along with five boards in a 102-100 loss at Chicago on Monday.
Z. ‘Zona. Arizona had no trouble remaining undefeated and perched atop the college basketball rankings as it hammered Arizona State 91-68 last Thursday. Six different Wildcats scored in double-figures as they improved to 18-0 and 5-0 in the Pac-12. Arizona is +800 at GT Bets to win the National Championship.
