This Week in Sports Betting, A-Z
by Ricky Dimon - 6/9/2014
A. Achilles
. Johan Santana-yes, he is actually still a thing-made headlines for the first time in a while last week. Unfortunately for the 35-year-old southpaw, he
won't be making any more anytime soon. Santana, currently in the Baltimore Orioles' organization, suffered a torn Achilles' during extended Spring Training
last Friday and is out for the season. Due to recurrent shoulder problems, the two-time Cy Young Award winner has not pitched in the majors since 2012.Baltimore (Norris) is a -130 home favorite over Boston (Peavy) on Monday, per Sports Interaction.
B. Dan Bylsma
. Sports is a win-now business, so a most recent Stanley Cup triumph in 2009 is not going to get the job done when you're the coach of the Pittsburgh
Penguins. Bylsma is no longer said coach, as he got the boot last Friday. He is the franchise leader with 252 wins behind the bench, but Pittsburgh was
just 4-5 in playoff series under Bylsma since it lifted the cup in '09. 5Dimes Sportsbook has the
"over/under" of Monday's Stanley Cup Finals Game 3 between New York and Los Angeles at five.
C. California Chrome
. Add California Chrome to the list of Kentucky Derby and Preakness winners who have failed at the Belmont. That means the Triple Crown list still ends
with Affirmed in 1978. Tonalist squeaked out a victory by a head over Commissioner this past weekend in New York, while California Chrome finished in a
dead heat with Wicked Strong for fourth.
D. DeSean Jackson
. Jackson is claiming that former agent Drew Rosenhaus bribed him to sign with Rosenhaus when the current Redskins' receiver was coming out of college back
in 2009. An arbitrator ruled in April that Jackson owes Rosenhaus $516,415 in loans and fees, but the former Philadelphia Eagle is hoping that this claim
will get him out of that snafu. Next question? Washington is +400 at Bovada Sportsbook to win the NFC East.
E. Extension
. In the words of Randy Moss, 49ers' quarterback Colin Kaepernick should be able to pay off all future expenses in "straight cash, homie." That's because
Kaepernick signed a six-year contract extension worth more than $110 million last Wednesday. It includes a signing bonus of $12 million and a record $61
million in guaranteed money.
F.
Frank Ribery
. Ribery will miss France's 2014 World Cup campaign due to a back injury, it was announced last Friday. The Bayern Munich forward joins midfielder Clement
Grenier on the sidelines for the French national team, which opens on Sunday against Honduras. France is a -125 favorite to win Group E, according to Bodog Sportsbook.
G. German national team
. France is not the only team missing key players as it heads into Brazil. Germany's friendly with Armenia last Friday proved to be a costly one as
midfielder Marco Reus sustained a bad ankle injury during the Germans' 6-1 victory. Reus, who plays his club ball with Borussia Dortmund, has been ruled
out for the entire World Cup. SuperBook has Germany as a +105 favorite over Portugal next Monday.
H. Jonah Hill
. The "Moneyball" and "Wolf of Wall Street" actor used a homophobic slur at a paparazzo, an incident that was captured in a video that made the internet
rounds earlier this month. He has since apologized during shows hosted by Howard Stern and Jimmy Fallon. Hill's "22 Jump Street," which also stars Channing
Tatum, opens in theaters on Friday. In other words, it's an opportune time for Hill to be in the news-good or bad.
I. Andres Iniesta
. Iniesta, who scored the game-winning goal in the 2010 World Cup final, and a few other members of the Spanish national team went lingerie-shopping for
their WAGs at a Victoria's Secret in Washington, D.C. last Monday. Sergio Ramos organized the four-man outing. Now might be a good time to Google the
significant other for which Ramos did the purchasing, Pilar Rubio. Carbon Sports has Spain at +650 to win it all.
J.
LeBron James
. LeBron famously departed Game 1 with fourth-quarter cramps, but he bounced back on Sunday to torch San Antonio with 35 points on awesome 14-of-22
shooting to go along with 10 rebounds in Miami's series-tying 98-96 win. He scored 14 points in the third quarter alone while making six of seven shots. The Heat are -4 home favorites in Game 3 on Tuesday, as indicated by BetOnline Sportsbook.
K. Craig Kimbrel
. Kimbrel passed John Smoltz for the Braves' franchise record in saves with his 155th on Friday night in Arizona. He promptly followed it up by
blowing a save for the third time this season on Saturday against the Diamondbacks. Atlanta, which got docked with another blown save in the 10 th inning, ended up losing 4-3 in 11.
L. Luis Montes
. The Mexican midfielder suffered a gruesome leg injury in his national team's My 31 friendly against Ecuador at AT&T Stadium in Dallas. He had scored
the match's first goal three minutes prior to the incident. Montes, of course, is out for the World Cup. WagerWeb has Mexico at +750 to win Group A.
M. Madden cover
. Seahawks' cornerback Richard Sherman won the vote to be on the cover of Madden NFL 15, beating out Panthers' quarterback Cam Newton last
weekend. Sherman is well aware of the well-documented Madden curse, but he's not buying into the concept. Who would when you're next? "I don't believe in
curses," Sherman said. "I believe in God." Um, okay. GT Bets has Seattle at
+600 to win a second consecutive Super Bowl.
N. Rafael Nadal
. Nadal won his fifth consecutive French Open, his ninth overall, and his 14th career Grand Slam title to tie him at No. 2 all time with Pete
Sampras when he defeated Novak Djokovic in four sets on Sunday.
O. David Ortiz
. No matter that the two teams are cellar-dwelling with room to spare in the AL East; there's still a heated rivalry there between the Red Sox and Rays.
Ortiz and David Price, who had a spat in last year's ALDS, got into it again late last month when the benches emptied after Price drilled the slugger in
the bottom of the first inning. Said Ortiz: "I had a lot of respect for the guy, man. It is over now. I have no more respect for him. So the first at-bat
of the season against him, he drills me. That means it's a war. It's on. Next time he hit me, he better put his gloves on."
P. Phil Mickelson
. This is not the time of year for Mickelson to be distracted from the task at hand as the U.S. Open is an event he should have won several times and the
only one he needs to complete the career Grand Slam. Lefty is being investigated by FBI agents for alleged insider trading. Rory McIlroy is a +873 favorite
at BetCRIS to win this week's U.S. Open; Mickelson is a +1589 third choice.
Q. Jonathan Quick
. Quick has been far from perfect so far in the Stanley Cup Finals, but he has been a wall when it matters most-you know, like in overtime. The Kings are
up 2-0 on the Rangers, having won each of the first two games at home in extra time. In 34:52 of ice time spanning three overtimes, Quick stopped 11 of 11
shots. New York is a -125 favorite at SportsBettingOnline.ag on Monday.
R. Rashad McCants
. McCants tried to single-handedly dominate SportsCenter last week by accusing North Carolina-and himself, for that matter-of academic fraud during his
time at the university. Academic fraud committed by a major Division I sports program!?!? Gasp! In news that may or may not be related, sky is blue. For
whatever it's worth, head basketball coach Roy Williams expressed "shock" and "disbelief" at McCants' comments.
S. Maria Sharapova
. Once at her worst-by far-on clay, Sharapova now owns more French Open titles than at any other Grand Slam event. She has one each at the other three
slams and two at Roland Garros after beating Simona Halep in a three-set thriller last Saturday.
T. Masahiro Tanaka
. Tanaka was expected to be the real deal, but nobody could have foreseen something this good and this consistent. The Japanese
right-hander has made 12 starts for the Yankees this year, and every single one of the 12 has been of the quality variety. Tanaka's E.R.A. is down to a
season-low 2.02 after he surrendered only one run in six innings to the A's in a 2-1 New York victory last Thursday. The Yankees (Nuno) are +115 road
underdogs at Kansas City (Vargas) on Monday, per BookMaker.
U. USMNT
. The immediate buildup to the World Cup has not been all well and good for the U.S. men's national team. Head coach Jurgen Klinsmann left Landon Donovan
off the roster and then declared that his squad is not good enough to win the title. Well, we're about to find out if the Americans are even good enough to
make it out of group play. Their first match comes next Monday against Ghana. Team USA is a +1137 longshot to win Group G, according to BookMaker.
V. Frank Vogel
. Indiana did not beat the Heat, but it did enough to save Vogel's job. Sources confirmed last week that the head coach will return for a fifth season.
W. World Series
. No, not the Fall Classic; this is the time of year for the College World Series. Louisville, Texas, Texas Tech, UC-Irvine and Vanderbilt have already
punched their tickets to Omaha.
X. X Games
. The Summer X Games took place last Thursday through Sunday in Austin, Texas. Among the winners were Nyjah Huston in the Monster Energy Men's Skateboard
Street final and 14-year-old Tom Schaar in the Skateboard Big Air.
Y. Yves Edwards
. The "Thugjitsu Master" may be on his last legs in MMA. At 37, Edwards lost his lightweight bout during UFC Fight Night last Saturday in Albuquerque, N.M.
Polish fighter Piotr Hallman got the job done with a rear-naked choke in the third round. Sportsbook.ag has Chris Weidman as a -235 favorite to beat Lyoto
Machida in next month's middleweight championship.
Z. Catherine Zeta-Jones
. Twenty-five years Michael Douglas' junior, Zeta-Jones is back together with her movie-star husband, and they have been making the rounds on various red
carpets. The most recent one came last Thursday at the AFI Life Achievement Awards, and it may have the power couple rethinking its propensity for public
appearances. Zeta-Jones and Morgan Freeman were allegedly attempting some kiss-on-cheeks action but it turned into some serious lip-locking.
