This Week in Sports Betting, A-Z
by Ricky Dimon - 4/18/2014
A. Aldon Smith
. Another chapter was added to Smith's story of off-the-field issues last Sunday at Los Angeles International Airport. The 49ers' defensive end had been
randomly selected for secondary screening when he reportedly became uncooperative with a TSA agent and indicated that he had a bomb. Um, what? San Francisco is +650 to win the Super Bowl, according to Bovada
Sportsbook.
B. Bubba Watson
. Bubba played. Bubba won. Bubba cried. Bubba went to Waffle House. That's just about what happened last week in Augusta. In between all of that, Jordan
Spieth provided some drama through three and a half days. Bubba, though, was simply too good at a tailor-made course, and the result was his second green
jacket in three years. Watson is +2500 at Bovada Sportsbook to win the U.S.
Open; Rory McIlory and Tiger Woods are +1000 co-favorites.
C. Coachella
. The first of two weekends at the California music festival featured a whole bunch of the biggest stars in the business. Cameo appearances were made by
Beyonce, Justin Bieber, and Jay Z. Outkast's Andre 3000 and Big Boi also performed together for the first time in seven years. This weekend's schedule
includes Foster the People, the Arcade Fire, and Aloe Blacc. But don't be surprised if more surprises rule the next three days.
D. DeSean Jackson
. This is a tale of a rich guy arguing with another rich guy and funds being transferred from one rich guy to another rich guy. An arbitrator ruled earlier
this week that Jackson owes former agent Drew Rosenhaus $516,415 in unpaid loans and fees. Rosenhaus had initially been seeking $777,793 for "loans,
interest, credit card charges, and insurance premiums." Jackson fired Rosenhaus last summer, and the Eagles essentially fired Jackson this spring. Neither
one, of course, will generate much sympathy. Carbon Sports has Philly at
+1400 to win the NFC Championship.
E. Epic
. That's what Kobe Bryant promises next season will be for the Los Angeles Lakers. Seriously? Seriously? L.A. stumbled to a 27-55 record in 2013-14, and
its rebuilding process for this fall features far more questions than answers in terms of its personnel both on the court and in the front office. Of
course, "epic" is one of the most misused words in the dictionary, so perhaps Kobe has an alternate or at least less-grand definition. The other L.A. team is a -7 home favorite over Golden State in Game 1 on Saturday, per BetOnline
Sportsbook.
F. Flo Rida
. The rapper settled with the feds earlier this week after they filed a tax lien again him, claiming he owed a total of $1,197,655 in back taxes from 2009
to 2011. However, Flo is not yet entirely out of the financial woods. A woman who says she's had sex with him in 10 different cities (he's not denying this
part of the story) is going after him for child support. Was the juice worth the squeeze?
G. Gandalf
. The wizard needs a new horse. The white steed named Blanco, who played Shadowfax in the "Lord of the Rings" movies, died earlier this week. He was put
down after a lengthy liver illness.
H. Kevin Harvick
. Harvick is the first two-time winner in the Sprint Cup this season after triumphing last Saturday night at Darlington Motor Speedway. The No. 4 was the
most dominant car, leading 239 of the 374 laps, but it needed four new tires to pass Dale Earnhardt Jr. with two laps remaining. Harvick is a +700 second
choice at Sportsbook.ag to win the Sprint Cup title; Jimmie Johnson is a +250 favorite.
I. Indiana Pacers
. Indiana actually beat out Miami for the No. 1 seed in the Eastern Conference, although phrasing it like that belies the truth. The Heat basically handed
it to the Pacers, who have the top spot despite going 5-8 in their last 13 games. Indy's most recent encounter against its first-round opponent, Atlanta,
resulted in a 107-88 blowout in the Hawks' favor on April 6…in Indiana. The Pacers are -7.5 home favorites in Game 1 on Saturday, per 5Dimes Sportsbook.
J. James Brian Hellwig
. RIP to the Ultimate Warrior, who died last week of a heart attack. Warrior dethroned Hulk Hogan as WWF (now WWE) champion in the early 1990s.
K. Colin Kaepernick
. It has not been a great off-the-field week for the 49ers, whose quarterback is one of the subjects in an alleged incident at Miami hotel. The team has
now put contract extension talks with Kaepernick on hold.
L. Liverpool
. Don't look now, but Liverpool is favored to win the English Premier League title. The Reds took down Manchester City 3-2 last Sunday and are now in first
place on the EPL table. Their 77 points are two better than second-place Chelsea and six clear of Man City (but City has played one fewer match). TopBet has Liverpool as a -200 favorite to win the title.
M. Matt Kuchar
. Kuchar may have taken over the status of golf's best player to have never won a major. He has six top-10 finishes in such tournaments, all since the
start of the 2010 season. He has top-eight finishes at each of the last three Masters. Kuchar, who blew a four-shot lead in Houston the Sunday before
Augusta, was briefly tied for the lead in the final round before finishing T-5, six shots behind Bubba.
N. National League East
. The Nationals are favored to win the division, but unless they positively dominate the rest of baseball, they will have to turn around their recent
history against Atlanta in order to do it. After being swept on the road last weekend, Washington is now 1-5 against the Braves this season and 7-22 in the
last 29 games between the two teams. The Braves are +606 at BookMaker to win the National League
Pennant.
O. One-year anniversary
. The one-year anniversary of the Boston Marathon bombings was on Tuesday, with all kinds of emotional tributes on Boylston Street taking place. Even more
emotional scenes will take place on Monday, when the next installment of the event is once again held on Patriots Day.
P. Pine tar
. "It was dirt." That's what Michael Pineda said of a suspicious substance on his hand and wrist while be befuddled the Red Sox through six innings of a
4-1 Yankees' victory last week. If that was dirt and not pine tar, then Ryan Braun was suspended for Flintstone vitamins instead of steroids. New York (Kuroda) is -106 favorite at Tampa Bay (Bedard) on Friday, per Carbon
Sports.
Q. Quest for the cup
. The Stanley Cup Playoffs began on Wednesday, and there has already been plenty of excitement, with five of eight games so far being decided by one goal.WagerWeb has Boston as a +325 favorite to win it all.
R. Ryan Malone
. There's never a good time to be hit with DUI and cocaine possession charges, but Malone certainly did not choose a good one. The Lightning forward missed
Game 1 of the playoffs on Wednesday (Tampa Bay won 5-4 in overtime) and his future status, as one might expect, is unknown. The Lightning are -107 home favorites in Game 2 on Friday, according to 5Dimes Sportsbook.
S. Schedule
. The Rams are offering $100,000 to anyone who correctly predicts their exact schedule. It is pretty much impossible for anyone to win this challenge, but
at least it's less impossible than winning Warren Buffett's perfect-bracket challenge.
T. Tommy John
. Add Matt Moore to list of players going under the Tommy John knife (or, more accurately, the Dr. James Andrews knife). Tampa Bay's 24-year-old southpaw
was 0-2 through two starts but sported a nice 2.70 ERA before feeling discomfort in his elbow. Moore went 17-4 with a 3.29 ERA last season for the Rays.
U. Upton twins
. B.J. and Justin are heating up for the Braves (relatively speaking for B.J., as he's only up to a .190 average!). The Upton brothers, however, are not
the subjects at hand right now. The more important subjects are Kate Upton's best assets, which were back in the news this week. Upton says they are too
big, often causing her discomfort. Few would agree. Atlanta (Harang) is -105 at SportsBettingOnline.ag to be leading host New York (Niese) after five
innings on Friday.
V. Vince Camuto
. That's the model of the purse Kaley Cuoco was sporting at the Los Angeles premier of "Authors Anonymous" last week. It was entirely see-through,
revealing that Cuoco-wife of little-known (for his own exploits) professional tennis player Ryan Sweeting-was carrying some $20 bills, a driver's license,
and an American Express card.
W. Wonderlic
. Johnny Manziel scored a 32 on the famous pre-NFL Draft test, receiving praise for his quite respectable number that was tops among the first-round
quarterback prospects. It must be pretty good, because Russell Wilson reportedly scored a 25, and Wilson is a smart dude. If Wilson thinks Manziel's score
is great, Vince Young must think it's off the charts.
X. Xabi Alonso
. "It was incredible. I have never seen anything like it." That's what Xabi said of Gareth Bale's match-winning goal for Real Madrid in the 85th minute
against Barcelona on Wednesday in Valencia. The victory gave Real the Copa del Rey in dramatic fashion after Bale outran Barca's defense from the midfield
line and finished past goalie Jose Manuel Pinto. Real Madrid is a +130 favorite at BetOnline Sportsbook to win La Liga; Barcelona is +450.
Y. Steve Yzerman
. One of the all-time Detroit Red Wings' greats, Yzerman is quickly becoming an elite performer in the front office. Three seasons after the Lightning
reached the Eastern Conference finals in Yzerman's first as vice president and general manager, he was signed to a four-year contract extension last week.
Yzerman already had one season remaining on his original deal, so this inks him through the 2018-19 campaign.
Z. Ryan Zimmerman
. Welp, that's probably not what the Nationals had in mind last weekend. In addition to their sweep at the hands of Atlanta, Zimmerman was added to their
expansive list of early-season injuries. The third baseman suffered a broken thumb while being picked off of second base with two outs and a man also on
third. GT Bets has Washington (Gonzalez) as a -110 home favorite over St.
Louis (Wacha) on Friday.
