This Week in Sports Betting, A-Z
by Ricky Dimon - 4/25/2014
A. Age limit
. New NBA commissioner Adam Silver says increasing the league's age minimum to 20 years old is one of his top priorities. He also appears to have the
support of a vast majority of NBA owners. That would mean no more one-and-dones (or at least not many) and maybe a lot more banners in the rafters of Rupp
Arena.
B. Boston Marathon
. It was Boston strong and American strong on Monday in Beantown. Most importantly, the Patriot's Day marathon took place without incident. As for icing on
the cake, one of USA's own won the race for the first time since 1985 (first American man since 1983) as Meb Keflezighi broke the tape in first place.
C. Champions League
. The first legs of UCL semifinals took place this week, and nothing is a sure thing heading into next week's pair of final matches. Chelsea battled host
Atletico Madrid to a 0-0 tie, while Real Madrid edged visiting Bayern Munich 1-0 on Wednesday. Real is a +175 favorite at BetOnline Sportsbook to win the Champions League.
D. Dinosaurs
. That's what the Toronto Sun called the Nets as it hyped the Raptors' first-round playoff series. Yes, the Nets are quite advanced in age, but
Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce, and company can still play some ball. New Jersey went on the road to win Game 1 94-87 before Toronto evened the series with a
100-95 victory on Tuesday. SportsBettingOnline.ag has the Nets as -5 home
favorites in Game 3 on Friday.
E. Eric Williams
. Williams is perhaps more famous for his work on VH1's "Basketball Wives" than for his work on the basketball court. That being said, he isn't really
famous at all. But he is broke. Word on the street is that Williams, who played more than 10 years in the NBA, is homeless and in dire financial straits.
F. Filed
. Apparently there was trouble in paradise for Russell Wilson. The Super Bowl-winning quarterback filed for divorce from his wife, whom he married in
January of 2012, earlier this week. The Seahawks are +600 favorites to go back-to-back, per Bovada
Sportsbook.
G. Carlos Gomez
. Leave it to Gomez to set off the baseball season's biggest bench-clearing brawl to date. The Brewers' center fielder posed and bat-flipped on a hit that
did not even clear the fence in a Sunday win over Pittsburgh. Pirates' starter Gerrit Cole took exception, and a melee ensured. Gomez was suspended three
games for his involvement.
H. Hook 'em, Horns
. There won't be a whole lot of that going on in Austin, at least not according to new head football coach Charlie Strong. He said earlier this week that
his team will not be a national title contender in his first season at the helm. Red McCombs could not have been happy to hear that! Florida State is a +450 favorite to win the National Championship, according to Bovada
Sportsbook; Texas is +4000.
I. Ike Davis
. The Mets traded Davis to the Pirates, and he promptly hit a walk-off grand slam in his third game with Pittsburgh on Monday, powering his team past
Cincinnati 6-5. New York (12-10) actually isn't that bad this season, but it still goes to show that nothing that franchise does these days turns out in
its favor.
J. Keyshawn Johnson
. Johnson was arrested and briefly jailed on Monday after an altercation with his girlfriend. The former star NFL wideout and current ESPN analyst was
released on $20,000 bond. This isn't good news for Johnson, but hey, at least he isn't Darren Sharper!
K. Matt Kuchar
. Kuchar now has nine top-10 finishes in his last 11 events, and at long last one of those nine is a win. After a flurry of crushing near-misses, he turned
the tide last Sunday at Harbour Town. Kuchar three-putted from four feet for bogey on 17 but holed a bunker shot for birdie on 18 to ultimately beat
third-round leader Luke Donald by one stroke. He is +2200 at Bovada Sportsbook
to win the U.S. Open; Rory McIlroy and Tiger Woods are +1000 favorites.
L. Leukemia
. Craig Sager was diagnosed with it last week. TNT responded by flying Sager's son, Craig Sager Jr., out to San Antonio for a Game 1 interview with Gregg
Popovich. Pop could not have been nicer, and at the end of the exchange prior to the fourth quarter he turned to the camera and delivered a heart-felt
message straight to Sager Sr. He also gave a hand-written note to Sager Jr. to take back to his father in Atlanta. Classy stuff. 5Dimes Sportsbook has the Spurs as -3.5 road favorites at Dallas in Game 3 on Saturday. The series is
tied 1-1.
M. Mark Emmert
. If Connecticut wants to serve Shabazz Napier breakfast in bed, it can do that. So says Emmert, the president of the NCAA. Another fun fact that some may
have learned during Emmert's recent media tour: a bagel without cream cheese is a "snack," but a bagel with cream cheese is a "meal."
N. Rafael Nadal
. Nadal has now failed to win the Monte-Carlo title on two straight occasions. For a mere clay-court mortal that would be no issue, but for Nadal it's a
full-fledged slump. After all, Nadal had won the thing eight straight times before a 2013 loss to Novak Djokovic. He fell to fellow Spaniard David Ferrer
in last week's quarterfinals. Nadal is a -150 favorite at Carbon Sports to
win the French Open.
O. Out
. That's what Mike Woodson is from New York. Of course, he was always going to be. His fate was sealed when the Knicks hired Phil Jackson as team president
late in the regular season. The Zen master will get his own guy, and it very well could be a former player of his in Bulls' sharpshooter Steve Kerr.
P. Albert Pujols
. The 500 homers milestone is not what it used to be, but it still ain't too shabby-especially for someone who has done as well as humanly possible to stay
out of the steroid scandal. Pujols launched numbers 499 and 500 on Tuesday in Washington to become the latest member of the club. The Angels' slugger is a
+500 favorite at Sportsbook.ag to lead the majors in home runs during the regular season.
Q. Joel Quenneville
. It's been a helluva week for the Blackhawks' head coach. For one, he was fined $25,000 for the ol' crotch grab, a gesture he offered while arguing with
referees during Game 1 at St. Louis last Thursday. Furthermore, Quenneville has been put through the ringer by his team. Three of Chicago's four playoff
games have ended 4-3 in overtime, the first two of which saw the defending Stanley Cup champions blow late third-quarter leads and lose. The Blackhawks
returned the favor on Wednesday, scoring a late goal to force overtime before leveling the series at 2-2. WagerWeb has both Chicago and St. Louis at -115 to win the series.
R. Julius Randle
. Kentucky's star freshman (one of many, that is) announced earlier this week that he will take his talents to the next level. He joins teammate James
Young in the draft, but there seems to be a chance-albeit a remote one-that all the other Wildcats return to Lexington.
S. Success
. That's what the 76ers' owner called his team's 19-win season. Well, Josh Harris may have a point-but we won't know until May 20. Philadelphia did not
snag the NBA's worst record, but it still has a 19.9 percent chance (second best behind Orlando) of snagging the No. 1 overall pick in this summer's draft.
Lottery teams will learn their draft position fate in the third week of May.
T. Tampa Bay Lightning
. Tampa Bay had all kinds of problems heading into the playoffs, and it promptly got swept in four games by the Canadiens. Montreal won three of the
contests by one goal, including a 4-3 clincher on Tuesday night. The Bruins are +325 favorites to
win the Stanley Cup, per Bovada Sportsbook; the Canadiens are +600.
U. Ulnar collateral ligament
. It's not a great time to be a starter for the Yankees. In the midst of Michael Pineda's multiple pine-tar scandals, Ivan Nova suffered the most
dreaded injury to the most dreaded of body parts for a pitcher. Nova sought a second opinion earlier this week, and it only confirmed that he will almost
certainly require Tommy John surgery. New York (Kuroda) is a -120 home favorite over the Angels (Wilson) on Friday, per BookMaker.
V. Victory lane
. Kevin Harvick-not Jimmie Johnson-is expected to take home the checkered flag from Richmond this weekend. Harvick triumphed two weeks ago at Darlington
prior to a rare off week on the Sprint Cup circuit. He is the first two-time winner of the young season. GT Bets has Harvick as a +650 favorite to win the Toyota Owners 400.
W. Washington Wizards
. Only one of the eight lower seeds took each of its first two games, and it was none other than Washington. The Wizards beat the Bulls 102-93 on Sunday
and 101-99 on Tuesday, both times in Chicago. Derrick Rose ain't walkin' through that door. The Wizards are -3 home favorites in Game 3 on Friday, according to 5Dimes Sportsbook.
X. X-Men
. A man suing "X-Men" director Bryan Singer of sexually abusing him as a teenager has sued three more people. Singer's attorney said on Wednesday that more
than 100 witnesses will able to confirm that Singer was not even in Hawaii-site of the alleged incident-when it may or may not have taken place.
Y. Nick Young
. It does not take a lot for a Los Angeles Laker to make more noise off the court than on it given how bad the team was this season. Young managed to do it
simply by throwing out the first pitch at the Dodgers-Phillies game on Wednesday, when he airmailed the ball a solid 10 feet over the catcher's glove.
Hilarious stuff.
Z. Zach Parise
. Parise has tallied points in each one of Minnesota's first four playoff games against Colorado (no goals but five assists), including an assist on an
overtime winner in Game 3 on Monday. The Wild head back west on Saturday having evened the series at 2-2.
