This Week in Sports Betting, A-Z
by Ricky Dimon - 5/30/2014
A. Adam Scott
. The current world No. 1 is playing like a No. 1 right now. No, Tiger Woods is no longer the top-ranked played. It's Scott, who triumphed last weekend at
the Colonial in a playoff over Jason Dufner. Scott is +1200 at Bovada Sportsbook to win next month's U.S. Open.
B. Belmont Stakes
. California Chrome is one week away from his attempt to become the first horse since Affirmed in 1978 to win the Triple Crown. He won both the Kentucky
Derby and the Preakness without too much trouble as he now heads to New York for the Belmont next weekend. California Chrome is a +112 favorite at BookMaker to win it.
C. L.A. Clippers
. The Donald Sterling saga is not quite over, but it is moving toward a mercifully swift conclusion. Microsoft chief executive Steve Ballmer agreed on
Thursday to buy the Clippers from Donald and Shelly Sterling for a whopping $2 billion. Solving world problems, $2 billion at a time….
D. Double
. Kurt Busch did not quite pull it off last Sunday. He at least became the fourth man to compete in both the Indianapolis 500 and the Coca-Cola 600, but he
was unable finish the job in Charlotte. Attempting to become the second man (Tony Stewart) to complete both races on the same day, Busch finished a
surprising sixth in Indianapolis before a blown engine on lap 273 of the NASCAR event ended his hopes.
E. Pilar Biggers Sanders Love El-Dey
. Apparently that's the name of Deion Sanders' ex-wife. Earlier this week she filed an appeal of a judgment that upheld her prenuptial agreement, which
likely cost her millions. PBSLED is claiming that she is a Moorish National Aboriginal and cannot be governed by United States law. Whatever.
F. First pitch
. Add 50 Cent to the growing list of epic first-pitch failures. The rapper and Queens native threw it out on Tuesday at Citi Field prior a Mets-Pirates
game, and to say it was bad would be putting it nicely for 50 Cent. It really has to be seen to be believed.
G. George Springer
. Who on Earth is George Springer? We're finding out in a hurry, as the Houston Astros' rookie right fielder is positively on fire. He has homered in five
of his last six games and has six home runs during the current stretch. Springer also has an 11-game hitting streak in progress. Houston (Oberholtzer) is
-103 underdog against Baltimore (Gonzalez) on Friday, per GT Bets.
H. Aaron Hernandez
. Hernandez pleaded not guilty earlier this week to the double-murder of two men in July of 2012. Either the guy is really dumb (well, that's confirmed),
his lawyers don't know what's good for him, or he already knows his fate is sealed in the other case involving the death of Odin Lloyd that he just doesn't
care anymore. Or perhaps it's all of the above.
I. Serge Ibaka
. Ibaka was initially ruled out for the remainder of the playoffs at the beginning of the Western Conference Finals between Oklahoma City and San Antonio.
Not so. The Thunder's shot-blocking force returned for Game 3 and promptly delivered 15 points, seven rebounds, and four blocks in OKC's first win of the
series. The Thunder are -3.5 home favorites at 5Dimes Sportsbook in Game 6.
J. Jesus Shuttlesworth
. Jesus saves! Not to the extent that he did last summer in Game 6 of the NBA Finals, when he brought Miami back from the dead against San Antonio, but
this was still somewhat miraculous. Ray Allen drained four three-pointers in the fourth quarter alone as the Heat won Game 3 99-87 over Indiana. They now
have a 3-2 lead in the series, with Game 6 in South Beach on Friday. Miami is a -7.5 favorite at
BookMaker.
K. L.A. Kings
. L.A. could not quite finish off Chicago on Wednesday as the visitors fell 4-3 in overtime in Game 5. The Kings still lead the Western Conference Finals
3-2, heading back home on Friday. L.A. is a -140 favorite in Game 6, per BetOnline Sportsbook.
L. Losing streak
. Boston's skid is over-finally. And it ended with a bang. The Red Sox had lost 10 in a row, but a mercurial Atlanta squad cured all of their ills. After
winning two road games against the Braves, the defending World Series champs went back to Fenway Park and took two more at Atlanta's expense on Wednesday
and Thursday.
M. Maya Angelou
. One of the world's most famous poets-the United States' Poet Laureate, in fact-passed away on Wednesday morning. Angelou was 86. Among those paying
respects on Twitter was Seattle Seahawks' head coach Pete Carroll. He posted, "'Nothing can dim the light which shines from within.' Thank you, Maya
Angelou. #RIP".
N. No-hitter
. The first no-no of the 2014 MLB season has been tossed, courtesy of the Dodgers' Josh Beckett. Pitching at Philadelphia last Sunday, Beckett walked three
and struck out six while befuddling the Phillies. One day later, L.A.'s Hyun-Jin Ryu was perfect through seven innings vs. Cincinnati. The Dodgers are +700
at Carbon Sports to win the World Series.
O. Owner
. One of the most-well known sports owners passed away on Wednesday. Malcolm Glazer of Manchester United and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers died at age 85. His
teams won five English Premier League titles and one Super Bowl since Glazer purchased them. R.I.P.
P. Hunter Pence
. Pence was none the richer when his beloved scooter got stolen. However, the third baseman's customized choice of transportation to Giants' games was
returned on Wednesday. Pence promptly thanked the famous "Batkid" for "keeping the streets of SF clean!!" The Giants (Bumgarner) are +130 underdogs at St. Louis (Wainwright) on Friday.
Q. Chad Qualls
. Qualls was recently named the Houston Astros' closer. Then again, that can't really be considered news given that Houston never wins and never really
even has leads. Closing for the Astros like punting for any team that has Peyton Manning at quarterback.
R. Real Madrid
. Real won a thriller of an all-Madrid Champions League final last weekend, scoring the go-ahead goal in stoppage time in a contest that was far more
entertaining than the 4-1 scoreline suggests. Ronaldo scored a meaningless fourth goal on a PK then celebrated like some kind of barbarian as if he had
just cured cancer. Ronaldo's Portugal is +3300 at WagerWeb to win the World Cup.
S. Serena Williams
. So much for that potential Serena vs. Venus third-round showdown at Roland Garros. That projected matchup turned out to be someone named Garbine Muguruza
vs. someone named Anna Schmiedlova. Muguruza destroyed Serena 6-2, 6-2 in the second round for one of the biggest tennis surprises in recent memory.
T. Tiger Woods
. To the surprise of nobody, Tiger is out of the U.S. Open. The 14-time major champion announced on Thursday that he is not yet recovered from March back
surgery.
U. Upset
. Serena is not the only favorite to exit Paris stage left. Both of the Australian Open champions-Stan Wawrinka and Li Na-lost in the very first round.
Agnieszka Radwanska bowed out on Friday, meaning for the first time in the Open Era all three women's top seeds have lost prior to the fourth round of a
Grand Slam. In one of Saturday's more intriguing matchups, Fabio Fognini is a -145 favorite at SportsBettingOnline.ag to beat Gael Monfils.
V. Vegas
. Johnny Manziel went to Las Vegas last week. Nothing specific even happened, but Johnny Manziel going to Vegas is apparently massive news in itself. In
major news that may or may not be related, Manziel ate, slept, and went to the grocery store yesterday.
W. Molly wop
. That's what Calvin Johnson's girlfriend has threatened to do to Johnson's alleged baby-mama. Now that is a big play involving the Detroit Lions' star
receiver that I would really like to see. Detroit is +425 to win the NFC North, according to Bovada Sportsbook.
X. Xavier Su'a-Filo
. Andre Johnson wasn't the only Houston Texan absent from organized team activities this week. Su'a-Filo, an offensive lineman and second-round draft pick,
has been excused due to classes at UCLA. Su'a-Filo and No. 1 overall selection Jadeveon Clowney are the Texans' only two picks still unsigned. Clowney is a
+200 favorite at Sportsbook to win NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year.
Y. Yips
. Rory McIlroy got 'em when wedding bells were just a gimme-putt away. McIlroy and Caroline Wozniacki were in at the invitation-sending stage when the
Northern Irishman called it all off. While Wozniacki promptly lost in round one of the French Open, McIlroy won a European Tour title last week. Off the
playing field, though, Wozniacki should have no trouble rebounding. BetOnline Sportsbook
has McIlroy as a +800 favorite to win the U.S. Open.
Z. Gianni Zandri
. If you haven't seen this 11-year-old kid on the internet or on NBA's coverage on either TNT or ESPN, Google is your friend. His Chris "Birdman" Anderson
costume is unbelievable.
