This Week in Sports Betting, A-Z
by Ricky Dimon - 1/29/2014
A. Mike Adams. Hoisting the Lombardi Trophy may not be Adams' only reward if Denver wins Super Bowl XLVIII on Sunday night. His feet are also set to get a workout. The Broncos' safety has vowed to walk home from East Rutherford, N.J. to Paterson, N.J. if his team beats the Seattle Seahawks. Paterson is a crime-ridden location approximately 10 miles outside of East Rutherford. Denver is a -2.5 favorite at TopBet.
B. Justin Bieber. Bieber’s downward spiral continued last week when he was charged with a DUI, illegal drag racing, and resisting arrest. He will be arraigned on Valentine’s Day. A lot of Americans, however, want Bieber to do a lot more than just go to jail. A reported 70,000 people have signed a petition for the 19-year-old Canadian singer to be deported.
C. Carmelo Anthony. Kobe Bryant’s five-year-old record for most points scored in a game at Madison Square Garden (61) fell last Friday night at the hands of New York’s Carmelo Anthony. ‘Melo dropped 62 in the Knicks’ 125-96 win over Charlotte. In other ‘Melo news, La La said on Tuesday that she “definitely” thinks her husband will stay in New York even after becoming a free agent this offseason. The Knicks are +550 to win the Atlantic Division, according to Sportsbook.
D. Daft Punk. The robot-headed French duo cleaned up at the Grammys on Sunday night, winning Record of the Year for "Get Lucky" and Album of the Year for "Random Access Memories." Daft Punk took home five Grammys overall.
E. Eli Manning. The younger Manning brother says he will give Peyton tips about playing in MetLife Stadium and dealing with possible weather elements. Unless the MetLife Stadium field has different dimensions than normal fields, it’s hard to see how this is relevant. If Peyton ties Eli by winning a second Super Bowl on Sunday, Eli should no longer be allowed to give Peyton advice on anything. GT Bets has Peyton as an even-money favorite to win MVP.
F. FA Cup. The U.S. men’s national team may be in the group of death for the World Cup, but that foursome might not even compare to one in the fifth round of the FA Cup. The top four teams in the English Premier League were pitted against each other during Sunday’s FA Cup draw ceremony. Chelsea will be at Manchester City, and Liverpool is paying a visit to Arsenal.
G. Matt Garza. The Brewers signed Garza to a four-year, $50 million deal on Sunday. The right-hander went 10-6 and compiled a 3.82 E.R.A. last season with the Cubs and Rangers. Milwaukee is +3500 at Carbon Sports to win the NL Pennant.
H. Kevin Hart. Hart’s “Ride Along” continues to clean up at the box office. The film set a January debut record with $48.6 million over MLK weekend, and it brought in $21.2 million in its second weekend. Somehow, Hart still has time to know enough sports that he can take Skip Bayless and Stephen A. Smith to the woodshed during “First Take” debates. BookMaker has “12 Years a Slave” at -350 to win the Oscar for Best Picture.
I. Iditarod. You’ve heard of events being cancelled due to extreme cold, but how’s this for a change: last weekend a qualifying race for the Iditarod got canned due to warm weather. The annual sled dog race in Alaska will once again take place in early March…weather permitting.
J. Jerry Rice. Something called Team Rice won this year’s Pro Bowl on Sunday, defeating something called Team Sanders. The former 49ers’ great captained his squad to win over Deion Sanders’ team in the first reformatted installment of the NFL’s all-star game. It’s hard to imagine any kind of Pro Bowl ever being a smashing success, but it looked like the players were at least pretending to try—if not altogether trying—throughout what was a competitive, 22-21 affair.
K. Khloe Kardashian. The estate of Kardashian and Lamar Odom was reportedly sold earlier this week to “Big Bang Theory” star Kaley Cuoco and her tennis-playing husband, Ryan Sweeting. Has a professional athlete ever out-kicked his coverage more than Sweeting?
L. Li Na. It was an all-around surprising Australian Open. Li isn't exactly a shock champion because she had already been a two-time runner-up in Melbourne, but anyone not named Serena Williams lifting the winner's trophy is always at least a minor upset. The Chinese hero took care of business last Saturday against Dominika Cibulkova to capture her second career Grand Slam title. Bovada Sportsbook has Li at +750 to win the French Open.
M. Michigan. No Trey Burke, no Tim Hardaway, Jr., no Mitch McGary (injured), no problem. The Wolverines have defeated three straight Top-10 opponents: Wisconsin (then No. 3), Iowa (then No. 10), and Michigan State (then No. 3). They have won nine in a row and are 7-0 in the Big Ten. Michigan’s last loss came to top-ranked Arizona, which is a -5 road favorite over Stanford on Wednesday.
N. No. 1. There’s a billboard in Houston asking the Texans to select Johnny Manziel with the No. 1 overall pick in this year’s NFL Draft. It reads “Keep Johnny football in Texas,” with www.DraftJohnnyManziel.com (the website created by the guys behind the billboard) at the bottom.
O. Outlook. The weather is not expected to be terrible for Super Bowl XLVIII. A normal wintry day in East Rutherford, N.J. (highs in the upper-30s, moderate wins) is on the menu. The over/under is 47, according to TopBet.
P. Matt Prater. The Broncos’ kicker was out of commission all of last week due to a virus, but he was well enough to return to practice on Monday. Prater is 30-for-32 on field-goal attempts this season (regular season and playoffs combined), including a record 64-yarder in a Dec. 8 win over Tennessee.
Q. Dan Quinn. How good is too good? The Seahawks’ defensive coordinator is at the helm of a dominant unit that has taken the team to New York. As a result, Quinn has missed out on head-coaching interviews and has been bypassed in favor of guys who are already available. Not surprisingly, Quinn—who is expected to be back in Seattle next season—says he would not have it any other way. The Seahawks are +225 at Bovada Sportsbook to score either a defensive or special-teams touchdown.
R. Richard Sherman. Sherman was fined $7,875 for taunting in Seattle’s NFC Championship win over San Francisco. Teammate Marshawn Lynch was almost ready to get himself fined for being the opposite of Sherman. Lynch was absent from Super Bowl media day on Tuesday before making a late appearance to avoid getting docked a substantial amount of cash. The star running back muttered a few words then bolted, but word on the street is that he did enough to avoid a fine. Sherman is +350 at WagerWeb to snag the game’s first interception. No interceptions in the game are +250.
S. Stephen Curry. After getting snubbed entirely from last year’s Western Conference all-star team, Curry is not just a participant in the All-Star Game this time around. Golden State’s slick-shooting guard was voted a starter last week. He is averaging 24.1 points per game and has scored at least 23 in each of his last seven plus 33 or more in four of his last eight.
T. Tiger Woods. Tiger is supposed to dominate Torrey Pines. He has won at that course eight times as a professional. Instead of bagging a ninth victory last weekend, though, Tiger missed the secondary cut at the Farmers Insurance Open. Rounds of 72 and 71 barely got him to Saturday before a bloated 79 ended his tournament prior to Sunday’s final round.
U. Unstoppable. That’s what Kevin Durant has been of late. Durant has scored at least 30 points in 11 consecutive games dating back to Jan. 7. The stretch includes a 54-point performance against Golden State on Jan. 17 and a game-winning jumper with one second left in Oklahoma City’s thriller against Atlanta on Monday. 5Dimes Sportsbook has the Thunder as +4 underdogs at Miami on Wednesday.
V. Justin Verlander. The Detroit Tigers’ right-hander underwent core muscle surgery two weeks ago, and although he is doing well, it is not yet known if he will be ready in time for the start of the 2014 season. Much more importantly for Verlander, he was vacationing last weekend with Kate Upton at the Gasparilla Pirate Festival in Tampa, Fla. What a hero. The Tigers are +850 to win the World Series, per Bovada Sportsbook.
W. Stanislas Wawrinka. Wawrinka became the first man since the 2004 French Open other than Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray, Juan Martin Del Potro, and Marat Safin to win a men's singles Grand Slam title. He took advantage of Nadal's balky back on Sunday to triumph at the Australian Open.
X. Xavier Henry. Henry has missed 15 straight games since suffering a knee injury in the Lakers’ Dec. 29 contest against Philadelphia. He had an MRI on Tuesday that revealed minimal improvement, so the small forward will miss at least another week. Henry had scored in double-figures in five straight outings prior to being sidelined.
Y. Yu Darvish. It’s still January, but the Rangers have already announced that Darvish will be their Opening Day starter for the upcoming season. The right-hander dealt with a lower-back injury during the last few months of the 2013 campaign, but he is expected to be ready for spring training.
Z. Henrik Zetterberg. The Detroit Red Wings’ forward missed games on Sunday and Tuesday with an upper body injury. He was also sidelined earlier in the season with a back problem. Despite having played in only 40 of 53 contests, Zetterberg still leads the Wings in goals (16), points (44), and plus-minus rating (+19). He is listed as day-to-day. Detroit is +1500 at BetOnline Sportsbook to win the Eastern Conference.
