This Week in Sports Betting, A-Z
by Ricky Dimon - 5/23/2014
A. Ben Affleck
. Affleck's cape for the upcoming "Batman" movie was revealed a few days ago. Blah. Who cares. The news from a few weeks ago is way more awesome, of
course. I mean, you can't make this stuff up. Affleck was banned from playing blackjack at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas after being caught
counting cards. It sounds like he was about as successful in that attempt as his recent gambling-themed movie, "Runner, Runner."
B. Chris Brown
. The singer-songwriter (not one of many athletes by the same name) was sentenced to a year in jail earlier this month for violating his probation. He
already had credit for 234 days served despite being locked up for half of that amount. That means he is in the midst of 131 more, but the chances of him
actually serving all of those 131 are slim. The math, after all, is always fuzzy when it comes to famous people and their jail time.
C. Crab legs
. The surveillance video of Jameis Winston's crab-leg theft hit the internet last week. It's not that awesome, but the story itself is obviously quite
awesome. There are few things that social media could possibly enjoy more than a Heisman Trophy winner being cited for stealing crab legs from a
supermarket. Winston is a +350 favorite at Carbon Sports to win the 2014
Heisman.
D. Draft lottery
. "So you're telling me there's a chance." There was, and the Cleveland Cavaliers' chances (1.7 percent, to be exact) worked out a lot better than those of
Jim Carrey's character, Lloyd Christmas, in "Dumb and Dumber." Cleveland won the lottery for the second consecutive year. Maybe the NBA wanted to give the
Cavs a do-over after they drafted Anthony Bennett No. 1 overall in 2013. Sportsbook.ag has Joel Embiid and Andrew Wiggins as -110 co-favorites to be the
first pick.
E. Engaged
. George Clooney is finally tying the knot. The 53-year-old actor got engaged to 36-year-old British human rights lawyer Amal Alamuddin late last month.
Ring statistics: seven carats, $750,000.
F. Floyd Mayweather
. Money Mayweather improved to 46-0 lifetime with a majority decision over Marcos Maidana on May 3. Ring statistics: 36 minutes in it, $32 million made.
G. Danny Green
. Green on Wednesday invoked memories of the player who was on display through the first five games of last year's NBA Finals between San Antonio and
Miami. He drained seven three-pointers as the Spurs hammered Oklahoma City by 35 points to take a 2-0 lead in the Western Conference Finals. The Thunder
are -2 home favorites at 5Dimes Sportsbook in Game 3.
H. Herniated disk
. Prince Fielder has one in his neck, and he is expected to undergo season-ending surgery next Tuesday. Detroit (Sanchez) is a -190 favorite over Texas
(Baker) on Friday night, per SportsBettingOnline.ag.
I. Serge Ibaka
. Ibaka has been ruled out for the remainder of the playoffs, and the Thunder's first two games without their shot-blocking force did not go well, to say
the least. They lost the opening contests in San Antonio by a combined 50 points. "
All players and coaching staff feel the Thunder is a family, and I have no doubt my 'family member' will put in a great effort in this difficult
series,"
Ibaka wrote to fans earlier this week. "Great" may be a gross overstatement, and "difficult" may be the understatement of the year.
J. Jose Fernandez
. Just like that, the Miami Marlins' season and perhaps their 2015 campaign have gone up in smoke. Fernandez, the team's 21-year-old ace, underwent the
dreaded Tommy John surgery last Friday. He was 4-2 with a 2.44 ERA through eight starts in 2014 and was leading all of Major League Baseball with 70
strikeouts
K. Kurt Busch
. Busch is attempting to become the first driver since 2001 to complete the Indianapolis 500/Coca-Cola 600 double on Sunday. He will race in Indy and then
make a quick flight to Charlotte. An inauspicious start to the week, however, saw the elder Busch brother slam into a wall during Indianapolis 500
practice, and he will have to use a backup car for the race.
L. LeBron James
. Is the NBA ready for a team as bad as the Indiana Pacers to be in the finals? LeBron sure isn't. On the verge of Miami trailing Indiana 2-0 in the East
championship series, the Chosen One scored 12 of his 22 points in the fourth quarter of Game 2 on Tuesday. He also shot 11-for-18 in the opener while
scoring 25 points and grabbing 10 rebounds but got little help as the Heat lost 107-96. The Heat are -7 home favorites on Saturday, per Carbon Sports.
M. Madrid
. Saturday's Champions League final in Lisbon, Portugal will be an all-Madrid battle between Atletico and Real. The two clubs have already four times this
season, with Atletico seizing the upper hand in La Liga and Real cruising through both legs of the Copa del Rey semifinals. Who will win the most important
one of all in the rubber match?
N. National team
. Landon Donovan was left off the U.S. men's national team when its World Cup roster was revealed on Thursday. Donovan, 32, had been the face of the USMNT
for the past three World Cups. Needless to say, head coach Jurgen Klinsmann will be in hot water if the Donovan-less squad underwhelms in Brazil. Team USA
is +15000 at WagerWeb to win the World Cup; Brazil is a +300 favorite.
O. Owners
. It hasn't been a great spring to be one of them in the NBA. First there was Donald Sterling. Then, on a much smaller scale, Mark Cuban resurfaced by
making a controversial Trayvon Martin-related comment. In a Wednesday interview with Inc., Cuban said, "If I see a black kid in a hoodie and it's late at
night, I'm walking to the other side of the street." He apologized to the Martin family on Thursday.
P. Patrick Peterson
. "I believe if you put him in our system I don't think he'd be able to last, honestly. I actually do much more than [him]. I don't want to get into that
debate as far as the stats that he has and things he has. Obviously, his job is definitely much easier than mine. If you look at their scheme and look at
our scheme, he's a Cover 3 corner." That's what Peterson had to say about Richard Sherman in a recent interview with an Arizona radio station. As if the
NFC West wasn't already entertaining enough…. The Cardinals are +2000 to win the NFC Championship, according to Bovada Sportsbook.
Q. Joel Quenneville
. There's a Blackhawks' fan page on Facebook called "Joel Quenneville's Mustache," and it has almost 31,000 likes. LOL. For Chicago, though, Game 2 of its
Western Conference Finals against the L.A. Kings was no laughing matter. Attempting to take a 2-0 lead in the series, the 'Hawks scored the game's first
two goals before giving up a hard-to-believe six straight in a 6-2 loss. BookMaker has L.A. as a -124
home favorite in Game 3.
R. Roland Garros
. The draws are out for the tennis season's second Grand Slam, which begins on Sunday. Heavy favorites Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic are obviously in
opposite halves as the top two seeds. On the women's side, meanwhile, Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova could face each other as early as the
quarterfinals. Nadal is a +120 favorite at Sportsbook.ag to win the title.
S. Michael Sam
. Reaction to Michael Sam's being drafted by the St. Louis Rams was mostly positive, but on-field expectations-at least not those of his own-are generally
low for the reigning SEC Defensive Player of the Year. After all, Sam fell to the seventh round before his historic selection. Jadeveon Clowney is +200 at
Sportsbook.ag to win NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year.
T. Triple Crown
. California Chrome will run for the Triple Crown on June 7 at Belmont Park in New York. He won the Kentucky Derby by almost two lengths, cruised at the
Preakness by 1.5 lengths, and he also won four races leading into Kentucky by an average of six lengths. Are we in store for the first crown winner since
Affirmed in 1978? California Chrome is a -125 favorite at BetOnline Sportsbook to win the
Belmont Stakes.
U. UGA
. Georgia may be known for its football, but it has been quite a season so far for the university's former golfers. Among the early winners were Patrick
Reed (twice), Bubba Watson, and Russell Henley. Then Watson won again, this time at the Masters for his second green jacket in three years. Last week,
Brendon Todd lifted his first-ever PGA Trophy by winning the Byron Nelson Championship. Bovada Sportsbook has Rory McIlroy and Tiger Woods as +1000 co-favorites to
win next month's U.S. Open.
V. Visitors
. It has been a clean sweep for the visiting teams through three games of the Eastern Conference Finals between New York and Montreal. The Canadiens are +155 road underdogs in Game 3, per 5Dimes Sportsbook.
W. Wes Welker
. Last year it was Tom Brady who won big on the Kentucky Derby. This time it was Welker who cashed in. Then again, it was more like cashed out
because Welker left Churchill Downs with a whole bunch of $100 bills and was handing them out left and right to strangers before a police officer put a
stop to the proceedings. Perhaps he was feeling especially generous because track reps are now saying that the Broncos' receiver was overpaid by $14,000. GT Bets has Denver as a -6 home favorite over Indianapolis in Week 1.
X. X-Men
. "X-Men: Days of Future Past" debuted in the states on Thursday night and is expected to dominate the box office during Memorial Day weekend. At least
$100 million is anticipated, and a cool $110 million may even be in the offing.
Y. Yu Darvish
. For the second time in his career (and in little more than a year), Darvish came within one out of pitching a no-hitter when he and the
Rangers beat Boston 8-0 earlier this month. The right-hander was previously one out away from a perfect game early last season against Houston. Darvish has
since made two more quality starts, giving him eight such outings in nine 2014 appearances. Texas is +1200 to win the AL Pennant at Bovada Sportsbook.
Z. Zooey Deschanel
. The 34-year-old musician and New Girl actress took one of those #nomakeup #nofilter selfies last weekend and posted it on Twitter for the world
to see. You wouldn't know from the photo, of course, that this is someone who is currently designing her own collaboration with Tommy Hilfiger.
