This Week in Sports Betting, A-Z
by Ricky Dimon - 10/10/2014
A. Alabama
. A.J. McCarron knows what he is doing (he's married to Katherine Webb, after all), which means he probably knows what he is talking about. So when he says
Alabama doesn't have leaders, then Alabama doesn't have leaders. Last week's result seems to confirm that notion, too, as the Tide were upset by Ole Miss
23-17. 'Bama is +1000 at GT Bets to win the National Championship; Auburn is
a +500 favorite.
B. Bynes, Amanda
. It's really only news when Bynes isn't making news, so she was really just up to her usual tricks on Wednesday when she was caught shoplifting in New
York. The 28-year-old actress responded by going off on Twitter. Her timeline is thoroughly entertaining-and hilarious.
C. Cotton, Jake
. Best false start ever? Quite possibly. Cotton, a Nebraska offensive lineman, false started then continued the false start by falling over backwards like
he was passing out. The video is an absolute must-watch. In less important news, the Huskers lost to Michigan State 27-22 last Saturday.
D. Dak Prescott
. The last eight days have been something out of a dream for Prescott's Heisman Trophy campaign. Marcus Mariota's Oregon Ducks lost
to Arizona last week before. Georgia suspended Todd Gurley indefinitely on Thursday. Prescott helped his own cause by passing for two TDs and rushing for
three more in Mississippi State's 48-31 rout of Texas A&M last Saturday. The Bulldogs are +3 home underdogs vs. Auburn on Saturday, per SportsBettingOnline.ag.
E. Eighteen
. That's how many innings the San Francisco Giants needed to win at Washington last Saturday and take a 2-0 lead in the division series. Inning-wise, it
tied the postseason record at 18. Time-wise, it set the postseason record at six hours and 23 minutes. San Fran won the game 2-1 and went on to take the
series 3-1. The Giants (Bumgarner) are +1.5 underdogs at the Cardinals (Wainwright)
in Game 1 of the NLCS on Saturday.
F.
Five hundred
. Peyton Manning reached that milestone last Sunday while throwing four total touchdown passes in Denver's 41-20 drubbing of Arizona. Manning tossed No.
500 on a seven-yard strike to Julius Thomas in the first quarter en route to finishing with 479 yards. He is now within five of Brett Favre's all-time
record (508). Normally he would have a chance to surpass that mark with one more game since the Broncos face the lowly Jets in Week 7, but Denver will
likely score too many defensive touchdowns at Geno Smith's expense to let Manning do it. Denver is a -9.5 road favorite at 5Dimes Sportsbook.
G. Green, A.J.
When you hear "carted off the field," you think "out for the season." The news is not so dire for Green, who could not leave Cincinnati's practice on his
own power on Wednesday. The Bengals' star receiver is likely to miss Sunday's game against Carolina, but he may be back for Week 7.
H. Hail Mary
. Arizona State stunned USC last weekend 38-34 on a successful 46-yard Hail Mary from Mike Bercovici to Jaelen Strong as time expired. Hail Mary winners
are always awesome, but this one would have been even more awesome if Lane Kiffin was still head coach of the Trojans. Southern Cal is a -3 road favorite at Arizona this weekend, according to BookMaker.
I. Illegal block
. Sunday's win over Arizona was not all fun and games for Thomas despite catching Manning's 500th touchdown pass. Later in the day, his
chop-block of Cardinals' defensive end Calais Campbell left him $8,268 short in the bank account. That's the standard amount for an illegal block for a
first-time offender. Why such an obscure amount? Only Roger Goodell knows, most likely.
J. Johnson, Larry
. Remember him? The former Penn State and Kansas City Chiefs star was arrested on Tuesday morning near Miami Beach and charged with aggravated assault.
Johnson reportedly punched someone at a bar several times and threatened the other man with a broken bottle. Goodell is just happy that Johnson is not a current NFL player.
K. Kris Versteeg
. You know the NHL has started when you are hearing vague injury reports like "upper-body injury" and "lower-body injury." Well, it has started, and
Blackhawks' forward Kris Versteeg is expected to miss three weeks with-you guessed it-a lower-body injury sustained during practice on Tuesday. Chicago,
which won its opener 3-2 in a shootout over San Jose on Thursday, is a +650 favorite at Bovada Sportsbook to win the Stanley Cup.
L. Logano, Joey
. Logano took home the checkered flag from last week's race in Kansas City. It was the first race in the second stage of the reformatted Chase for the
Sprint Cup. Thus, Logano is automatically through to the next round. This Chase stuff is confusing, but what even the casual NASCAR fan can decipher for
certain is that the finale in Homestead is going to be a free-for-all.
M. Mayweather, Floyd
. Is Prince Jackson, Michael's son, going to be the next great boxing champion? He will if Money Mayweather has anything to do with it. Prince was spotted
in a truck with "The Money Team" decals plastered all over it last weekend, a story to which Mayweather responded by saying he wants to train the kid.
N.
Nadal, Rafael
. Nadal missed three months-including the U.S. Open-with a wrist injury and then was struck by appendicitis upon his return in Asia, where he lost to
someone named Martin Klizan in Beijing and to Feliciano Lopez in Shanghai. The guy can't catch a break these days. Carbon Sports has Nadal as a +350 second choice to win the Australian Open
in January; Novak Djokovic is a +150 favorite.
O. Orioles
. Baltimore rolled to the AL East title and maintained its momentum by sweeping Detroit in the first round. Of course, a more accurate assessment of the
situation would be saying that the Tigers were swept by their own bullpen. WagerWeb has the Orioles as
+200 favorites to win the World Series.
P. Paula Patton
. Robin Thicke walked a fine line-not a blurred one-between desperate and crazy as he tried to save his marriage with Patton. But his attempt did not work.
Patton filed for divorce from the 37-year-old singer/songwriter earlier this week, citing the age-old "irreconcilable differences."
Q. D'Qwell Jackson
. The Colts' linebacker tied for the team lead in tackles in Thursday's win at Houston, had one sack, and recovered a game-clinching fumble on the Texans'
final drive. By recent Thursday night standards, this game was phenomenal. Indy surged to a 24-0 first-quarter lead before withstanding some additional
J.J. Watt heroics and holding on for a 33-28 victory.
R. Rory McIlroy
. McIlroy was named PGA Tour Player of the Year last week. He joins Tiger Woods, Greg Norman, and Nick Price as multiple winners of the award, which was
first handed out in 1990. McIlroy is a +600 favorite at Sportsbook.ag to win next year's Masters.
S. Stauskas, Nik
. The Sacramento Kings' rookie said after last weekend's preseason game against Toronto than he is expecting to be attacked "at all times" because he is
white. Starting a controversy is probably the only way a 6-foot-6' white guy in the NBA is going to make headlines. Savvy move, Stauskas!
T. Trial
. NFL players are not always the sharpest tools in the shed. Take Adrian Peterson, for example. Prior to a Wednesday court hearing, Peterson smoked weed
and told the drug tester as much. Prosecutors in Texas are attempting to have the Vikings' running back arrested-again-and revoke his bond. As for
Peterson's trial on felony child abuse charges, it is scheduled to begin on Dec. 1. Minnesota is a -1 home favorite over Detroit on Sunday, per 5Dimes Sportsbook.
U. Unsportsmanlike conduct
. It is not always limited to the playing field. In Week 6, a Lions' fan-and not a smart one, either-shined a laser pointer at Bills' quarterback Kyle
Orton and holder Colton Schmidt. The guy, Mark Beslach, even tweeted about what he had done, thus helping team officials catch him. He was cited for
misdemeanor disorderly conduct, will have to pay a small fine, and is banned from future Detroit home games. Hey, at least he probably gained a lot of
Twitter followers…. Well, until his account was deleted. The Bills are +3 home underdogs
against the Patriots, per Sportsbook.ag.
V.
Vick, Michael
. At long last, Vick replaced Smith during the Jets' 31-0 loss at San Diego last Sunday. Vick wasn't good (8-for-19, 47 yards), but he was better than
Smith (4-for-12, 27 yards, one interception). Head coach Rex Ryan, though, says Smith will be back in the starting role for this week's game against
Denver. On one hand, that suggests Ryan is positioning his team to get Mariota with the No. 1 pick of next year's draft. On the other hand, Ryan won't be
the Jets' head coach at that point if they have the No. 1 pick.
W. Wenger, Arsene
. It's always fun when soccer managers get into it. That's what happened when Wenger's Arsenal club went up against Chelsea during English Premier League
action last weekend. Wenger called his shove of Jose Mourinho "a little push." As for Wenger's team, it went down to the Blues 2-0 and has slumped to a tie
for seventh in the EPL standings. Chelsea is a -200 favorite at BetOnline Sportsbook to
win the Premier League.
X. Xavier Silas
. Silas was among four Washington Wizards who were suspended one game (the first of the regular season) for leaving the bench during Monday's game against
Chicago. Silas, DeJuan Blair, Daniel Orton, and Nene went onto the floor during a shoving match between Paul Pierce and Joakim Noah.
Y. Young, Nick
. Young, who quietly averaged 17.9 points per game last season, suffered a complete tear of the radial collateral ligament in his right thumb while
guarding Kobe Bryant during practice last week. The Lakers' guard is expected to miss six to eight weeks. That just means more free time to hang out with
Iggy Azalea. The Lakers are +4500 at BookMaker to win the Western Conference.
Z. Zabaleta, Pablo
. The Manchester City defender says the Premier League race is open to more than just Man City and Chelsea. That seems to imply that he takes City being in
the mix as a given, but right now Chelsea is running away on the table with 19 points. Zabaleta's second-place Sky Blues have 14 points, one better than
third-place Southampton.
