This Week in Sports Betting, A-Z
by Ricky Dimon - 10/31/2014
A. Anthony Davis
. Bow to the brow. Davis went wild in the New Orleans Pelicans' opener on Wednesday night. He scored 26 points, pulled down 17 rebounds, and blocked nine
shots. Monster. Davis is +1000 at Sportsbook.ag to win NBA MVP.
B. Bumgarner, Madison
. Well, what else is there to say about this guy? He went 2-0 and picked up a five-inning save on two-day's rest in Game 7 at Kansas City. Bumgarner now
sports the best career ERA in World Series history at a ridiculous 0.25. Bovada Sportsbook has the Giants at +1200 to go back-to-back in 2015.
C. Chevy guy
. Leave it to a previously-unknown, Chris Farley-like Chevy representative to steal the spotlight away from one of the most dominant World Series
performances in history. That's exactly what happened, and if you've seen the MVP presentation (who hasn't?), you know the attention it's getting is
well-deserved.
D. Dale Earnhardt Jr
.
Earnhardt failed to make the eliminator round in the Chase for the Sprint Cup, but he bagged a nice consolation prize by winning last weekend at
Martinsville. It was Little E's fourth victory of 2014, having previously triumphed at Pocono (twice) and at the Daytona 500. Jeff Gordon is +200 at Carbon Sports to win the Sprint Cup.
E. Eric Staal
. The Carolina Hurricanes activated their team captain and center forward on Tuesday after he missed five games with the NHL special "upper-body injury."
One of the most durable players in the league, Staal has tallied at least 48 points in nine consecutive seasons. He has a point in all three of his outings
this year. Carolina has the longest Stanley Cup-winning odds of anyone at +30000, per Bovada.
F.
Fight AIDS
. Rihanna donated $150,000 to the American Foundation for AIDS Research at an auction on Wednesday in Los Angeles. The wardrobes worn by both Rihanna and
Miley Cyrus probably made everyone in attendance forget the real purpose of the gala, so they better have thrown down a lot of cash to make up for
the…er…distractions.
G. Gurley, Todd
. The NCAA suspended Gurley for a total of four games in the benefits-for-autographs scandal, meaning he has to sit out two more having already missed a
pair. Georgia's star running back is scheduled to return Nov. 15 at home against Auburn. Assuming the Bulldogs win their next two games (they could
probably beat Florida with an entire team of backups), that showdown with Auburn will be epic. UGA is a -10.5 favorite over the Gators at BookMaker.
H. Houston, Lamarr
. Houston's season-ending, ACL-tearing celebration was wrong on just so many levels. First of all, he's a buffoon (albeit not the first one) for injuring
himself while celebrating. Secondly, the Bears were trailing by 25 points with four minutes left in the game. Moreover, Houston did not
even sack Tom Brady; it was freaking Jimmy Garoppolo for crying out loud.
I. Interception
. What was Bo Wallace thinking at the end of last Saturday's game at LSU? He wasn't, clearly. With Ole Miss looking for a few extra yards to position
itself for a game-tying field goal, Wallace heaved a prayer almost all the way to the endzone that was easily caught by the Tigers for a game-ending
interception. It's safe to say that was the "Bad Bo." The Rebels are +1000 at BetOnline Sportsbook to win the National Championship.
J. Jose Canseco
. Canseco shot his left middle finger off on Tuesday. You can't make this stuff up, folks. The former slugger was reportedly cleaning guns at his Las Vegas
home when one went off and blew off the ill-place digit. Now Canseco's fiancé is replying to everyone who makes fun of him on Twitter with "DOUCHE." What a
story.
K. KO
. Mike Tyson got knocked out by…Mike Tyson. The boxer played against himself in legendary Nintendo game Mike Tyson's Punch-Out while making an appearance
on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon this week. It was actually a technical knockout, as Little Mac-controlled by Tyson-was felled three time's by
video-game Tyson in the first round. In other news, episode one of "Mike Tyson's Mysteries" was…well…interesting.
L. L.A. Lakers
. Seriously, how bad can it get for the Lakers? They already had considerable injury issues, and that was before Steve Nash was confirmed out for the year
with back problems and Julius Randle suffered a broken leg in the regular-season opener. And L.A. was not even supposed to be good even with Nash and
Randle. Kobe Bryant and company are 0-2 so far with losses by 18 and 20 points. The Lakers are +11.5 "home" underdogs vs. the Clippers on Friday, per Carbon Sports.
M. McCoy, Colt
. How wide open is the NFC? Well, the team with the best record lost at home to team playing with not only a 2-5 record but also with a third-string
quarterback. McCoy sure didn't play like one, completing 25 of 30 passes for 299 yards while also running for a touchdown in the Redskins' 20-17 overtime
win at Dallas on Monday night. Now someone tell me how Cowboys' running back Joseph Randle can steal underwear and then get an endorsement deal from
meUndies but McCoy can play good football and not get a deal to endorse Colt revolvers. Washington at Minnesota is an even-money game, according to 5Dimes Sportsbook.
N.
Nashville Predators
. It's hockey season, in case you didn't notice. The Predators obviously got the memo as they have played nine games and have lost in regulation only once.
Nashville is 6-1-2 with 14 points, tied for second best in the Western Conference but ahead of everyone else in the NHL who has played the same number of
games.
O. Oscar Taveras
. One of the St. Louis Cardinals' top prospects, Taveras, was killed along with his girlfriend in a car crash last weekend in the Dominican Republic.
Taveras, 22, played in 80 games for the Cardinals last season and batted .239 with three homers and 22 RBIs. R.I.P.
P. Prater, Matt
. The Lions have already gone through about 50 kickers this season, and they were about to make it 51 until Prater got a do-over. Prater appeared to have
missed last weekend's game-winning attempt in London against the Falcons, but Detroit had been called for a delay of game, and there was no play. He
promptly nailed the next try from five yards farther back as the Lions prevailed 22-21. We will do Atlanta a favor and not mention the comedy of errors
that led to giving Prater a game-winning opportunity. Detroit is +105 at GT Bets to win the NFC North.
Q. Quick, Jonathan
. The L.A. Kings' goalie lost and then got a 10-minute game misconduct penalty, in that order. After a controversial Flyers' OT goal was ruled a good one
on Tuesday, Quick slammed his stick against the post then launched it across the ice. It's not as fun as Girls Gone Wild, but Goalies Gone Wild is not half
bad. The Kings are even-money underdogs at Detroit on Friday, as indicated by Sportsbook.ag.
R. Rose, Derrick
. The Bulls needed Rose to play just 22 minutes as they rolled at New York 104-80 on Wednesday. He had 13 points, five assists, two steals, and zero torn
ACLs.
S. Swift, Taylor
. T-Swift is good looking, good at singing, and apparently likes basketball. Well, she at least likes drinking beer and being seen courtside at Knicks'
games, which is just as good if not better than liking basketball. In other words, she's the total package. Swift and her lingerie model friend Karlie
Kloss took in the Knicks' opener against Chicago.
T. Tony Romo
. Adding insult to injury, or vice versa, to Dallas' loss to the Redskins was Romo's exit due to a back problem. Romo returned late in the fourth quarter
but has not practiced this week and is questionable for Sunday's game against Arizona. If Jerry Jones tells Romo he is playing, is he playing? The Cowboys are +1400 to win the Super Bowl at Bovada Sportsbook.
U. Utah Utes
. Utah scored its biggest and most dramatic win since moving to the Pac-12 when it beat USC 24-21 last weekend on a touchdown pass with eight seconds
remaining. It was not all fun and games for the Utes, who lost receiver Dres Anderson (22 catches, 355 yards, four TDs) for the season due to a knee
injury. Anderson is the son of former NFL wideout Willie "Flipper" Anderson, who still holds the record for single-game receiving yards (336). Utah is a
+6.5 road underdog at Arizona State, according to BookMaker.
V.
Villanueva, Charlie
. The Mavericks' forward proposed to his girlfriend with a huge diamond ring earlier this week. His now-fiancé is Michelle Game, a model who stars in music
videos, including for 50 Cent. Google is your friend.
W. Wayne Rooney
. If Rooney plays in this in this Sunday's Manchester Derby, he will be returning from both an injury and a three-game suspension. The Man U star has not
played since Sept. 27, when he kicked a West Ham opponent while pretending to make a play on a ball that was about five yards away. Hey, at least Rooney
doesn't bite people. Man City is a -114 favorite at SuperBook to beat Man U.
X. Xavier Samuel
. Samuel plays Lieutenant Parker and gives orders to Don "Wardaddy" Collier (Brad Pitt) in the current hit war movie "Fury." The movie was No. 1 at the box
office with an opening weekend of more than $23 million, and it was third from last Friday though Sunday at more than $13 million.
Y. Young, Thaddeus
. Young is leading the way for the new-look Minnesota Timberwolves through two games. In his first season with the team after seven in Philadelphia, Young
went for 26 points, four rebounds, and four assists in Wednesday's opener against Memphis and had 19 points, five rebounds, and three steals one day later
in a win over Detroit. The former Georgia Tech star is also 17 of 31 from the floor.
Z. Zlatan Ibrahimovic
. The Paris Saint-Germain striker said earlier this week that his chances of winning the Ballon d'Or (FIFA Player of the Year) will be hurt by having
missed time with injuries. He had to sit out the World Cup and has now been sidelined since late September with a heel injury, although he could return
this weekend. Ibrahimovic will also be hurt by the fact that his name is not Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo. Those two have swept the four awards given
since it started being handed out in 2010.
