This Week in Sports Betting, A-Z
by Ricky Dimon - 12/3/2014
A. Amari Cooper
. Cooper went batshit crazy in the Iron Bowl as Alabama outgunned Auburn 55-44. The junior receiver hauled in 13 passes for an incredible 224 yards and
three touchdowns. All three of his scores came from at least 17 yards away, including one of 75 yards from Blake Sims. Cooper has 103 catches for 1,573
yards and 14 TDs heading into the SEC Championship. The Crimson Tide are -14.5 favorites over Missouri at Bovada Sportsbook.
B. Brennan Clay
. DeMarco Murray apparently does not limit his scoring to the football field. The scoring he does off the field is of a more controversial variety. Clay, a
teammate of Murray's at Oklahoma, has filed for divorce from his wife and is accusing the Cowboys' star running back of having an affair with her. Dallas
is +300 at Carbon Sports to win the NFC East.
C. Cars
. Lil Wayne threw a huge birthday bash for his 16-year-old daughter and bought her cars (yes, that's "cars" plural). One was a Ferrari and the
other a BMW. In other news, Lil Wayne is 32. That means the baby mama had his daughter when he was 16. Sounds about right. Overall, Weezy has four kids by
four different women. Also sounds about right.
D. DeMar DeRozan
. The Raptors' shooting guard and leading scorer is expected to be out for a month after tearing a muscle in his left groin (the adductor longus tendon, to
be exact) in a loss to the Mavericks last Friday. Who knows what that muscle is specifically, but it does not like it would feel good. Toronto is +500 at Bovada Sportsbook to win the Eastern Conference.
E. Elliott Seymour
. Seymour is the dude-apparently a homeless one in L.A.-who got knocked out by Mickey Rourke in the second round last Wednesday in Moscow. It was the
boxer-turned-actor's first bout since 1994. He is 62; Seymour is 29. That age discrepancy begs the question: how did it happen? Seymour attributed the loss
to having just one month to train but insisted he was not paid to throw the fight. That's sad even for someone who's been living on the streets.
F.
Football, Johnny
. Will it be Johnny Manziel or Brian Hoyer? Stay tuned…. The Browns are +4 home underdogs against
Indianapolis on Sunday, as indicated by Sportsbook.ag.
G. Geno Smith
. Smith wasn't terrible on Monday night; he wasn't allowed to be. The Jets attempted only 13 passes, including just eight in the first 58 minutes of their
16-13 loss to Miami. They rushed it a ridiculous 49 times, even when the Dolphins consistently stacked eight and nine defenders in the box throughout the
second half. Rex Ryan is going out, but he's not going out before making more headlines.
H. Hands up
. Five St. Louis Rams players struck the "hands up, don't shoot" pose as they took the field prior to last week's home game against the Raiders in a
peaceful protest of the grand jury decision not to indict the officer who shot and killed Michael Brown in Ferguson, Mo. Police are not happy, but everyone
in St. Louis should approve of the fact that it led to a 52-0 rout of the Raiders. Then again, perhaps the issue was a distraction for the Rams because
most teams would beat Oakland more along the lines of 100-0.
I. Injuries
. They are piling up for Ohio State, which is still in contention for a berth in the College Football Playoff. First it was Braxton Miller; now it is J.T.
Barrett. The Buckeyes are down to their third-string quarterback (Cardale Jones) after Barrett went down with a broken ankle during his team's 42-28
rivalry win over Michigan last weekend. OSU is a +4.5 underdog against Wisconsin in the Big Ten
Championship, according to BookMaker.
J. Johnson, Ellis
. What's the fastest way to unemployment, other than being Brady Hoke? Give up 55 points and 539 total yards to your biggest rival, of course. Johnson was
canned less than 24 hours after Auburn blew a 12-point lead in the Iron Bowl and allowed Cooper to have a record-setting night.
K. Kosta Karageorge
. The body of the missing Ohio State defensive lineman was found near campus on Sunday. Karageorge, who was suffering from concussions symptoms, according
to his mother, reportedly died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. R.I.P.
L. Laskey, Zach
. Georgia Tech's senior running back saved the best game of his career for last-at least the last of the regular season, as the Yellow Jackets have the ACC
Championship and likely the Orange Bowl still on their schedule. Laskey carried 26 times for 140 yards and three touchdowns last Saturday to help Tech stun
Georgia 30-24 in an overtime thriller. GT is a +4.5 underdog at 5Dimes Sportsbook against Florida State.
M. Mathieu, Tyrann
. They say the honey badger don't care, but neither Mathieu nor the Cardinals will be happy about the fact that he is expected to miss three weeks
following thumb surgery. At 9-3, they are still major players in the playoff picture despite losing at Atlanta in Week 13, so this injury stings. WagerWeb has Arizona at +1000 to win the NFC.
N.
Nelson Cruz
. Cruz signed a four-year, $57 million deal with the Mariners on Monday. He is coming off a season in which he bounced back from suspension to lead the
majors with 40 home runs to go along with a respectable .271 batting average and career-highs not only in dingers but also in RBIs (108) and runs scored
(87). And that was after he had been caught for using steroids. Just think how good he would be if he was still on the juice!
O. Ofer
. Not one, not two, not three…not eight, not nine, not 10…not 14, not 15, not 16…. The season-opening streak is up to 17 consecutive losses after
Philadelphia succumbed to visiting San Antonio 109-103 on Monday night. Gregg Popovich did not even have Tim Ducan and Tony Parker suit up so that the
Spurs would not have to completely embarrass a team that is one setback away from tying the 2009-10 Nets for the worst start in NBA history. The 76ers are +6.5 road underdogs against Minnesota on Wednesday, per Carbon Sports.
P. Pelini, Bo
. Nebraska has apparently forgotten that it is supposed to be mediocre at football. The days of being a national contender ended, like, in the 1990s after
Tom Osborne left. But AD Shawn Eichorst must have the same standards because he fired Pelini despite season win totals of 9, 10, 10, 9, 10, 9, and 9.
Q. Quinn, Pat
. Quinn might as well have been Mr. Maple Leaf. He played 99 games for Toronto from 1968-1970, was head coach from 1998-2006, and assumed the general
manager role from 1999-2003. Quinn died on Nov. 23 following a long illness and was honored at the Air Canada Centre last Saturday night prior to the
team's 6-2 win over Washington. R.I.P.
R. Russell Westbrook
. The Thunder's stars are back, and not a moment too soon. Westbrook returned last Friday and went 12 of 17 from the floor with 32 points, seven rebounds,
and eight assists in an Oklahoma City (5-13) blowout of New York. Kevin Durant made his season debut one game later against New Orleans on Tuesday in a
112-104 loss and scored 27 points on 9-for-18 shooting. Not too surprisingly, Westbrook took more shots with Durant on the floor (20) than he did
against the Knicks. OKC is +250 at BetOnline Sportsbook to win the Northwest Division.
S. Sherman, Richard
. The only day in recent 49ers' history markedly worse than last Thursday was this January's NFC Championship, when Sherman came up with a game-clinching
interception to send Seattle to the Super Bowl. In the most recent installment of the rivalry, Sherman intercepted Colin Kaepernick twice in the Seahawks'
19-3 victory. Kaepernick finished an anemic 16-of-29 for 121 yards with no touchdowns. This time the Pro Bowl cornerback celebrated with an on-field
Thanksgiving feast as opposed to yelling wildly into Erin Andrews' microphone. Seattle is a +1.5 underdog at Philadelphia, per BetCRIS.
T. Travis Kelce
. The Chiefs' tight end made an inappropriate, sexually-charged gesture after Von Miller put a late hit on Alex Smith during Denver's 29-16 win on Sunday
night. For those who have not seen it, here's an idea of what it was: in a since-deleted tweet, Kelce wrote that the "gesture on the TV tonight wasn't
towards the ref…[Miller] had a [cheap] shot on my QB, so I thought he deserved a shot to the face". Welp. BookMaker has Kansas City as a +1 underdog at Arizona in Week 14.
U. Unbroken
. Mostly a war movie but part sports movie, "Unbroken" directed by Angelina Jolie is out on Christmas Day. Based on the book by Laura Hillenbrand, it
chronicles the real-life story of Louis Zamperini, an Olympic runner who was taken prisoner the Japanese during World War II.
V.
V week
. It is Jimmy V week on ESPN, beginning on Wednesday. Most importantly, it is for the great cause of cancer research. From a selfish fan's perspective, it
is awesome because we get to relive Jim Valvano's legendary ESPY speech on the entire ESPN network of channels. GT Bets has Kentucky at +140 to win the National Championship.
W. Watson, Deshaun
. According to Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney, Watson played with a torn ACL during the Tigers' 35-17 win over South Carolina. He briefly exited three
times for a previously-undisclosed leg issue but returned on each occasion and finished with 269 passing yards and four total touchdowns. Steve Spurrier
already knew he had a bad team on his hands, and that was before he found out he had lost to quarterback with a torn ACL.
X. Denotes clinched division
. We will soon be seeing these pop up in the NFL standings, perhaps one as early as this Sunday. The Colts will wrap up the AFC South with a win in Week 13
combined with a Texans' loss. Indianapolis is +1000 at Sportsbook.ag to win the AFC.
Y. Yashin, Lev
. Yashin is the last goalkeeper to win the Ballon d'Or, which is awarded annually by FIFA to the best soccer player in the world. The Soviet Union star won
it in 1963. Fifty-one years later, fellow goalie Manuel Neuer of Bayern Munich and the German national team is up for the honor. Who's he going up against?
Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi. Good luck!
Z. Zemgus Girgensons
. Who is the leading NHL All-Star Game vote-getter? Sidney Crosby? Nope. Alex Ovechkin? Guess again. It's none other than Girgensons, a 20-year-old with
all of 13 points this season. Somehow, Latvians have stuffed the ballot like the Chinese did for Yao Ming in NBA all-star voting. Girgensons had 399,356
votes as of Tuesday's count, way more than second-place Crosby (218,672). Bovada Sportsbook has Pittsburgh at +750 to win the Stanley Cup.
