This Week in Sports Betting, A-Z
by Ricky Dimon - 10/23/2014
A. Alex Morgan
. The most recognizable player on the U.S. women's national team sustained an ankle injury last Friday night and will be sidelined 4-6 weeks, putting her
out for the remainder of 2016 World Cup qualifying. We need her back on the field as soon as possible-for obvious reasons.
B. Brad Keselowski
. Nobody could have been too pleased with Sunday's result at Talladega because the man everyone loves to hate right now took home the checkered flag.
Keselowski, who had been involved in a wreck and an ensuing shoving match with Matt Kenseth one week earlier, took home the checkered flag. With it, he
clinched a spot in the eliminator round of the Chase for the Sprint Cup. Keselowski is +600 at Bovada Sportsbook to win this weekend in Martinsville; Jeff
Gordon is a +350 favorite.
C. Chubb, Nick
. Todd who? In the absence of suspended running back Todd Gurley, Chubb has been an absolute workhouse. The freshman phenom rushed an outrageous 38 times
for 143 yards and a touchdown against Missouri before getting 30 carries and turning them into 202 yards and two scores against Arkansas. Needless to say,
the 'Dawgs dominated both games.
D. Demarco Murray
. When Tony Romo doesn't have to make plays in the fourth quarter, it's a good thing for the Cowboys. Just ask Jerry Jones. And at this rate Romo may not
have to. Dallas is dominating many of its opponents thanks to Murray, who has seven consecutive 100-yard games to begin the season and has found the
endzone seven times. The Cowboys are +851 at BookMaker to win the Super Bowl.
E. El Clasico
. Get your popcorn ready for the first El Clasico installment of the season. La Liga rivals Real Madrid and FC Barcelona will square off on Saturday in
Madrid. Barcelona is a -120 favorite to win the league title, per Bovada Sportsbook.
F.
Five-hundred ten
. Peyton Manning is now the all-time record-holder for touchdown passes in a career with 510. He surpassed the mark of 508 previously held by Brett Favre
by throwing four TDs in last weekend's drubbing of San Francisco. This Manning is pretty good…in the regular season, at least.
G. Gronkowski
. Nope, not that Gronkowski. Glenn Gronkowski caught only one pass in Kansas State's game at Oklahoma last weekend, but he made it count.
It went for a 62-yard touchdown as the Wildcats eventually pulled off a 31-30 upset. And yes, Glenn and Rob are related. Brothers. KSU is a -10 home favorite over Texas, as indicated by Sportsbook.ag.
H. Haden, Pat
. Remember LenDale White? The former USC and Tennessee Titans' running back was escorted from Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum following the Trojans' home win
over Colorado last weekend. White reportedly got into a heated conversation with Haden, the school's athletic director, then blamed his removal on the AD.
I. Ishikawa, Travis
. Sports are awesome. With one swing of the bat, they can propel someone from relative obscurity into the lore of one of the most famous franchises in the
history of Major League Baseball. That happened to Ishikawa when the 31-year-old journeyman hit a walk-off homer in Game 5 of the NLCS to send San
Francisco past St. Louis and into the World Series. The Giants (Hudson) are -123 home favorites over the Royals (Guthrie) in Friday's
Game 3, per BookMaker.
J. Jay Cutler
. Of course, for every Ishikawa there's a story of high-priced players who can't get along and pretty much can't win. That is the case of Cutler and wide
receiver Brandon Marshall, who may or may not be in another spat after Chicago lost at home to Miami 27-14 last weekend. I'd be in a bad mood, too, if the
NFL made my team play six of its first nine games of a season on the road. Then again, the Bears can't win at home, so maybe it gives them a chance?
K. Kevin White
. The West Virginia wide receiver went off in the Mountaineers' 41-27 upset of previously-undefeated Baylor last Saturday. White caught eight passes for
132 yards and two touchdowns. Of course, that was nothing new for the senior. A la Murray in the NFL, White has seven consecutive 100-yard performances to
begin the season. GT Bets has the Mountaineers as +1 road underdogs against
Oklahoma State.
L. Lorde
. A local San Francisco radio station banned the playing of Lorde's "Royals" for the duration of the World Series. The jinx-or whatever you call it-worked
for Game 1 as the Giants cruised 7-1. The Royals, however, did Lorde proud with a 7-2 rout in Game 2 on Wednesday. Which "Team" do you think is gonna win?
M. Mike Moustakas
. Kansas City's third baseman batted a horrendous .212 in the regular season, but that hardly matters now. He hit safely in all three division-series games
against the Angels while belting two home runs, and he went deep in each of the first two contests of the ALCS sweep over Baltimore. Not stopping now,
Moustakas also had hits in each of the first two World Series games. He is +2000 at Sportsbook
to win World Series MVP.
N.
New Jersey
. New Jersey governor Chris Christie signed the state's sports betting bill last week, clearing the way for casinos and racetracks to begin accepting
wagers as soon as this weekend. Victory!
O. Oscar de la Renta
. One of the most renowned fashion designers in the world, de la Renta died on Monday at the age of 82. The Dominican-born American had recently designed
Amal Alamuddin's wedding dress for her marriage to George Clooney. R.I.P.
P. Percy Harvin
. The Seahawks traded Harvin to the Jets last week for some loose change, ice cream, and some inconsequential McDonald's Monopoly pieces…or something like
that. Seattle signed Harvin to a six-year, $67 million contact prior to last year and was rewarded with exactly six regular-season games played by the
former University of Florida standout. 5Dimes Sportsbook has the Jets as -2.5 home favorites over
Buffalo.
Q. Quarantined
. Tori Spelling was quarantined over the weekend. But nope, it's not Ebola. The 41-year-old actress was admitted to a L.A. hospital for a severe case of
bronchitis with a sinus infection. She had to cancel a scheduled media tour for the second season of her reality show.
R. Retaliate
. That's what Blake Griffin says he might have to do if he keeps getting hammered by hard fouls. The Clippers' power forward had to be separated from
Utah's Trevor Booker after one such incident in a preseason game last Friday. We don't need another Malice at the Palace, but a few minor skirmishes
involving Griffin this season wouldn't hurt anyone, would they? L.A. is +475 at Carbon Sports to win the Western Conference.
S. Sergio Aguero
. Manchester City may be a borderline disaster in Champions League play, but in a sense it picked up some more bragging rights over Premier League rival
Manchester United. Sergio Aguero traveled 12,214 miles with Argentina during the recent international break then returned last Saturday to score a whopping
four goals in Man City's win over Tottenham. Meanwhile, Man U's Radamel Falcao endured about half the travel (6,760 miles) with Colombia, had two more days
of rest, but still couldn't go on Monday against West Brom. The reason? Jet lag. City is a +225 second choice at SuperBook to win the EPL title.
T. Texas A&M
. Remember that time when Texas A&M was good? You don't even to go so far back as when Johnny Manziel was under center in College Station. The Aggies
were once 5-0 this season, 2-0 in the SEC, and QB Kenny Hill was one of the Heisman Trophy favorites. Suddenly, they have lost three in a row-all in the
conference-and are coming off a 59-0 humiliation against Alabama. Louisiana-Monroe is next. Luckily for A&M, it has bye to prepare. It might need it;
even for the Warhawks.
U. Underwear
. First he stole underwear. Now he's endorsing it. Yep, you heard that right. Cowboys' running back Joseph Randle, who was arrested in Frisco, Tex. earlier
this month for stealing from a Dillard's, has struck a deal to promote MeUndies. So, kids, the lesson here is that if you do bad things, good things will
happen to you!
V.
Voynov, Slava
. Apparently football players aren't the only ones who beat people up. Voynov, a defenseman for the Los Angeles Kings, was arrested on Monday morning on
domestic violence charges, and he has been suspended indefinitely by the NHL pending a full investigation. In news about as expected as sky being blue,
Voynov's lawyer is denying the accusations. L.A. is +850 at BetOnline Sportsbook to win
the Stanley Cup.
W. Woods, Tiger
. Tiger is once again swinging his big stick…on the driving range, folks. The 14-time major champion has not played since the PGA Championship, instead
resting his bad back while missing the FedEx Cup Playoffs and the Ryder Cup. He is reportedly hitting full shots now and is scheduled to resume competition
in early December. Bovada Sportsbook has Tiger at +1000 to win the Masters.
X. Xavier Henry
. The Lakers have a laundry list of injuries (what's new?), and it includes Henry. The fifth-year swingman is still recovering from surgery on his right
knee that forced him to miss much of last season. L.A. hopes to have him back for next week's regular-season opener against Houston.
Y. You're out
. That's essentially what the Patriots told cornerback Darrelle Revis in advance of Tuesday's practice. Revis was banned from practicing after missing the
scheduled 7:30 a.m. arrival time. "Between me and Coach," Revis said. "Talk to him about it." Um, the media talking to Bill Belichick wouldn't do much
good. New England is a -6 home favorite over Chicago, according to Carbon Sports.
Z. Zany
. That would be a good adjective to describe Mike Tyson's upcoming cartoon. The Adult Swim show is called "Mike Tyson Mysteries" and features the legendary
boxer solving problems along with his sidekick-a drunk, masturbating pigeon. No, this is not a joke. And no, you can't make this stuff up.
