This Week in Sports Betting, A-Z
by Ricky Dimon - 9/4/2014
A. Angel Di Maria
. Real Madrid and Manchester United last week agreed on a transfer fee of $100 million for Di Maria, an Argentine attacking midfielder. He is set to move
from the Spanish club to Manchester, where United is in desperate need of some help after recording one loss and two draws in its first three English
Premier League matches of the season. SuperBook has Man U at +1000 to win the Premier League; Chelsea
is -137 favorite.
B. B.J. Raji
. The Packers' defensive tackle is out for the year after suffering a torn right biceps in a preseason game. A rotation of Josh Boyd, Mike Pennel, Letroy
Guion may be used to replace Raji. Green Bay is a +5.5 underdog at Seattle in Thursday's season
opener, per SportsBettingOnline.ag.
C. Carey, Mariah
. Carey and Nick Cannon have split and are likely headed for a divorce. Reports are conflicting over who cheated, who ended it, and who is the most
depressed about it. Of course, neither one should have much trouble rebounding.
D. Damian Lillard
. When the U.S. men's national team made its final cuts in advance of the FIBA World Cup, Lillard got the axe. So, too, did Chandler Parsons, Kyle Korver,
and Gordon Hayward. So far it has not really mattered who has been on the floor for Team USA against entirely inferior competition. The Americans are 4-0
and have clinched first place in Group C.
E. Emmys
. The Emmys had just about everything last week, most importantly-of course-beautiful actresses. It also had the comical (Seth Meyers and Billy Eichner
interviewing random New Yorkers, for example), the heartfelt (Billy Crystal's tribute to Robin Williams), and the ridiculous (another instance of name
butchering ala John Travolta at the Oscars, this time courtesy of Gwen Stefani).
F.
Foley, Sean
. The swing guru and Tiger Woods have parted ways. Don't feel too sorry for Foley, though. First of all, Tiger is a shadow of his former self. Secondly,
Foley basically still coaches every single notable golfer on tour. Tiger is obviously out of the Ryder Cup, which Europe is favored to win at -225 by
Bovada Sportsbook.
G. Garrett Richards
. Richards suffered a torn patellar tendon in his left knee late last month and underwent season-ending surgery. The Angels' right-hander was 13-4 to go
along with a 2.61 ERA for his 2014 campaign. L.A. (Santiago) is a -125 favorite at Minnesota (Gibson) on Thursday, per BookMaker.
H. Hill, Shaun
. Sam Bradford is out. Hill is in. The 34-year-old veteran has suddenly become the Rams' starter now that Bradford has gone down with yet another torn ACL.
Endorsements have not exactly been ringing for Hill even from his own team and coaching staff, but head coach Jeff Fisher and company insist he is their
guy. Bovada Sportsbook has the Rams as -3.5 home favorites over the Vikings in
Week 1.
I. Richie Incognito
. The NFL reinstated Incognito last week following last season's indefinite suspension in the wake of Miami's bullying scandal. Rumors are flying fast and
furiously, the loudest of which has Incognito going to the Colts. Here's one bold prediction: he won't be going to Jonathan Martin's 49ers!
J. Jean-Sebastien Giguere
. The NHL is no longer getting Jiggy with it. Giguere announced his retirement on Aug. 21 after a 16-year career. He did his most notable work for the
Anaheim Ducks, winning the Conn Smythe Trophy in 2003 (despite losing in the Stanley Cup Finals) and helping his team lift the cup in 2007.
K. Keegan Bradley
. Tom Watson's picks are in, and the captain has chosen Bradley, Hunter Mahan, and Webb Simpson for the United States' Ryder Cup team. Chris Kirk, who
triumphed over Labor Day weekend at the Deutsche Bank Championship, was left off the squad. Rory McIlory is a +390 favorite at BetCRIS to win this week's BMW Championship.
L.
Love, Kevin
. All you need is love. That's basically what oddsmakers have told the Cleveland Cavaliers, who are now favored (+320 at Sportsbook)-ahead of defending champ San Antonio-to win the 2015 NBA title after acquiring Love
from Minnesota. Meanwhile, the Timberwolves are enjoying record ticket sales since getting No. 1 overall pick Andrew Wiggins in exchange for Love.
M. Manny Machado
. No Manny no cry. The Orioles' third basemen underwent season-ending surgery last month and played his last game on Aug. 11. Baltimore led Toronto by six
games and the Yankees by seven at the time. It now leads the Yankees by 9.5 and the Blue Jays by 10. The Orioles (81-57) are 13-7 in this stretch without
Machado and are coasting to the AL East crown. GT Bets has Baltimore at +800
to win the World Series.
N. Novelty gift company
. The "honey badger don't care" guy apparently cares after all. A novelty gift company called Accoutrements produces honey badger breath mints with packing
that includes Christopher Gordon's famous phrase. Gordon is getting none of the profits, but Accoutrements says that he never trademarked the phrase or the
character for food products. Fight! And I think we all know how a fight involving a honey badger turns out….
O. Oakland Raiders
. The silver and black will be feeling blue this season, at least according to ESPN's first NFL power rankings. Oakland is dead last at No. 32. The team
also happens to be dead last in the way of youth after rosters were recently cut down to 53 players. No squad is older than the Raiders, whose average age
is 27. WagerWeb has Oakland as a +5.5 underdog at the Jets on Sunday.
P. Phelps, Michael
. He's back! In his first international competition since the London Olympics, Phelps picked up three gold medals and two silvers at the Pan Pacific
Swimming Championships in Southport, Australia, late last month. Rio here we come!
Q. Quan Bray
. The Auburn senior won his team's punt-returning job and got off to a strong start in that department in last Saturday's 45-21 season-opening win over
Arkansas. Bray returned one for 18 yards and another for 13, and he also lined up at quarterback in a few wildcat formations. Auburn coaches expect a
breakout year for the dynamic athlete. The Tigers are +1000 to win the National Championship, per
Bovada Sportsbook.
R. Rusney Castillo
. The safe bet is that Mookie Betts' days as the Boston Red Sox center fielder are numbered, if not this year then next. That's because Boston signed
Castillo to a seven-year, $72.5 million deal last month. Castillo, a 27-year-old (allegedly) from Cuba, is currently playing for the team's Gulf Coast
League affiliate.
S. Sunderland
. How bad is Manchester United these days? Well, among their three lackluster results so far in this Premier League season is a 1-1 draw against
Sunderland. For those wondering, that ain't good. Sunderland also has a draw against West Bromwich and a 1-0 loss to Queens Park Rangers. The team is +3300 to finish in the top six of the EPL, according to Bovada Sportsbook.
T. Tony Stewart
. Stewart returned to the track this past weekend for the first time since fatally striking sprint-car driver Kevin Ward Jr. in a sprint-car race. He
participated in the Oral-B 500 at Atlanta Motor Speedway as his last-ditch attempt to qualify for the Chase for the Sprint Cup resumed. A collision with
Kyle Busch on lap No. 122 brought a premature end to Stewart's night before Kasey Kahne eventually took home the checkered flag. Carbon Sports has Jimmie Johnson and Jeff Gordon as +400 co-favorites to
win the Sprint Cup.
U. U.S. Open
. There have been a few upsets in New York City, especially on the women's side, but each of the No. 1 players in the world continued to advance on
Wednesday night. Serena Williams rolled over Flavia Pennetta and Novak Djokovic held off Andy Murray to book semifinal spots. Are we headed for another
Djokovic vs. Roger Federer major final? Djokovic is a -175 favorite at BetOnline Sportsbook to win the men's title.
V. Video Music Awards
. Last month's VMAs featured Beyonce, Jay-Z, Blue Ivy, Ariana Grande, Nicki Minaj, Miley Cyrus, and a homeless man, among many others. If you had money on
"Wrecking Ball" bringing in Video of the Year honors (and admit it, you did), you were in the green.
W. Walk-off
. The Nationals are pulling away in the NL East and doing so in dramatic fashion. In a six-win span from Aug. 16 through last Aug. 21, five victories were
of the walk-off variety. Washington completed a three-game sweep of Pittsburgh with two walk-offs and three of its four scalps of Arizona came in its final
at-bat. The Nats are +200 at Sportsbook.ag to win the NL Pennant.
X. Xander Bogaerts
. That was no way to get treated by a King. Bogaerts got drilled in the head by a Felix Hernandez pitch late last month and was placed on the seven-day
disabled list with mild concussion symptoms. Boston's 21-year-old shortstop, though, bounced back like a champ from King Felix's errant throw and returned
right when he was eligible to come off the DL last Saturday. Three days after that he went 4-for-5 with a homer and two RBIs in a 9-4 win over the Yankees.
Y. Yu Darvish
. The Rangers are probably shutting down Darvish along with several other players for the rest of the season. And why not? The team stinks; and that's
putting it nicely. At 53-86, Texas is the worst team in Major League Baseball with room to spare. Adding insult to injury, or vice versa, Darvish has been
on the disabled list since Aug. 13 due to an elbow injury. At BookMaker, the Rangers (Ross) are +105
home underdogs vs. Seattle (Elias) on Thursday.
Z. Zydrunas Ilgauskas
. Everyone wants to play in Cleveland with LeBron James. And when I say everyone, I mean everyone. Ilgauskas, all of 39 years old, is reportedly
considering a comeback after retiring from the NBA in 2011. His agent, however, is denying it.
