Sports Betting Futures: Coaching Carousel Continues with Michigan Opening
by Ricky Dimon - 12/4/2014
To the surprise of no one, Brady Hoke is out at Michigan. It is currently one of two premier job openings in the college ranks (along with Nebraska); not
three because Jim McElwain has reached an agreement to leave Colorado State and coach Florida. Jim Harbaugh's days in San Francisco appear to be numbered,
so it's time to let the Harbaugh-to-Michigan rumors fly.
Odds provided by Bovada Sportsbook unless otherwise indicated
.
Jim Harbaugh in Week 1 of 2015
Head coach of another NFL team (Even)
- A 7-5 record is not a disaster, but it may not cut it in the NFC-especially not in the NFC West. The 49ers are 3-3 in their last six, got humiliated by
rival Seattle on Thanksgiving, and Harbaugh has well-documented beef with the team's higher-ups. Oakland is already a rumor, and other jobs like Atlanta
will presumably be open in the near future.
Head coach of an NCAA team (+200)
- Harbaugh was head coach at Stanford for four seasons from 2007 through 2010 and finished with an Orange Bowl victory before bolting for San Francisco. He
knows what he is doing at the college level. The 50-year-old played quarterback at Michigan from 1983 through 1986, so it seems like this is a match made
in heaven.
Head coach of the San Francisco 49ers (+300)
- Harbaugh is the fourth year of a five-year contract, so another NFL team may have to trade for his services. That would be enticing for the Niners (and
perhaps for Harbaugh, too), but not necessarily for anyone else. With San Fran still in the thick of the playoff hunt, there is a chance things could take
a turn for the better both on and off the field.
Anything else (+1500)
- As the odds suggest, it would be surprising to see Harbaugh and the 49ers parting ways with one season left on the deal without the end result being a
different head-coaching destination. The only chance is if Harbaugh is just tired of it all and wants to wait one year before an NFL job more desirable
than that of the Raiders opens up.
2015-16 Head Coach of the Michigan Wolverines
Jim Harbaugh (+200)
- Athletic director Jim Hackett is insisting that the next head coach does not necessarily have to be a "Michigan man." That makes sense because Hoke
basically was one (formerly an assistant coach of the Wolverines from 1995 through 2002), and the experiment clearly did not work. But Harbaugh is a
Michigan man who would make a lot of sense.
Les Miles (+250)
- The case is a similar one for Miles. It would not be a reach at all to tab this Michigan man as the next head coach. Miles, who played two seasons at UM
and spent 10 years as an assistant coach, is a proven commodity-to say the least. He is 103-28 lifetime at LSU with one National Championship (2007).
Butch Jones (+350)
- Jones is not a Michigan man, although he has spent time in the state as both an assistant and head coach at Central Michigan. The 46-year-old fared
extremely well there and at Cincinnati, but the competition has been tougher and the going has been slower at his current post in Tennessee.
Mike Gundy (+350)
- Gundy is a Big 12 guy; he played for Oklahoma State and has coached there, at Baylor, at Maryland, and is now back at his alma mater as the head coach.
In his first nine years at OSU, he led the Cowboys to eight bowls and three seasons with double-digit wins. But they are just 5-6 in 2014, so would Gundy
be open to leaving?
Kentucky
(Odds provided by Sportsbook.ag)
National Championship (+140)
- Kentucky is 7-0 and has coasted through all of its games by at least 19 points, including a 72-40 humiliation of Kansas on Nov. 18. The Wildcats finished
runner-up last season and-by their standards-have a ton of experience. Duke, which won 80-70 at Wisconsin on Wednesday, is the second choice at +750.
Arizona is third at +800.
Undefeated for entire season (+700)
- Seven down, 33 to go. The Wildcats are loaded with NBA talents such as Aaron Harrison, Andrew Harrison, Devin Booker, and Dakari Johnson, just to name a
few. Furthermore, the rest of the SEC is down. But UK has dates on the regular-season schedule with Texas (on Friday), North Carolina, and Louisville.
Tiger Woods
Win any major in 2015 (+200)
- Tiger has said he is good to go, and we will find out this week as he tees it up at his own tournament, the Hero World Challenge, in his hometown of
Windermere, Fla. The 14-time major champion has not won a big one since the 2008 U.S. Open. Since then, he has six DNPs (two in 2014) and three cuts missed
(including most recently at the '14 PGA).
Win the Masters (+1000)
- He is no longer good enough to win at less than 100 percent, but if Tiger is 100 percent there are reasons to like his chances at Augusta. He
has donned the green jacket four times, and even though he has not won it since 2005, he has a ridiculous seven top-six finishes in the last nine
years-including six top-four finishes in his last eight appearances.
Win the British Open (+1000)
- The only major cut Tiger made in 2014 came at the Open Championship. A 69th-place performance was nothing special, but he preceded that with a T3 (2012)
and a T6 (2013). He knows how to get the job done on the links, especially at St. Andrews-site of the 2015 event. Tiger captured the Claret Jug at the Old
Course in 2005.
Win the FedEx Cup (+1500)
- Tiger has longer odds here because the FedEx Cup is a season-long competition, and it's hard to imagine him staying healthy and showing consistency for
nine months. That being said, this cup can be a crapshoot. Billy Horschel had a mediocre year then caught fire during the playoffs to win it, and Tiger
knows a thing or two about getting hot at the right time.
