Sports Betting Futures Weekly Report: Bucs Being Left Behind in Otherwise Competitive South
by Ricky Dimon - 9/25/2014
No division's top three teams are separated by a smaller margin in the odds department than those of the NFC South. The favored Saints are one game back of
the Falcons and Panthers, while the lowly Bucs have already been left for dead. While Week 4 of the NFL takes center stage this week, the Ryder Cup and
Sprint Cup are also on course for headlines.

NFC South
New Orleans Saints (+110)
- The Saints are finally in the win column, and by their recent standards-yes-waiting until Week 3 does qualify as "finally." Having blown considerable
leads in each of their first two contests (they lost in overtime at division foe Atlanta and threw away what should have been a victory at Cleveland), the
Saints could easily be 3-0.
Atlanta Falcons (+250)
- After surviving New Orleans at home, the Falcons got manhandled at Cincinnati-but that loss may be getting better and better by the week given how the
Bengals look right now. Last Thursday's beatdown of Tampa Bay-no matter how bad that team is-suggests Atlanta may be more like the Atlanta squad that
showed up against the Saints.
Carolina Panthers (+250)
- The Greg Hardy domestic-violence case has undoubtedly been a distraction, and Cam Newton is clearly not 100 percent. Carolina started 2-0, but those
factors seemed to catch up with it in an extremely disappointing 37-19 home loss to Pittsburgh in Week 3. The Panthers are +3.5 road underdogs at Baltimore on Sunday.
Tampa Bay Bucs (+7500)
- There's New Orleans, Atlanta, and Carolina…and then there's everyone else. That "everyone else" is Tampa Bay. The Bucs, who might as well have lost 100-0
to the Falcons in Week 3, are beyond awful. Still, they have better division odds than St. Louis (+10000 in the NFC West), Jacksonville (+10000 in the AFC
South), and Oakland (+20000 in the AFC West).
Ryder Cup
Europe (-175)
- Europe has won the past two Ryder Cups and five of the last six dating back to the 2002 event. It prevailed by just one point each of the last two times
after dominating by a whopping nine points in both 2004 and 2006. This year's impressive roster is led by Rory McIlory, Sergio Garcia, Martin Kaymer,
Justin Rose, and Henrik Stenson.
United States (+150)
- The United States has gotten the job done only once (2008) since the amazing Sunday comeback in 1999 under captain Ben Crenshaw. It has not won in Europe
since taking The Belfry by storm in 1993-21 years ago. The Americans may be relying on Phil Mickelson, Rickie Fowler, Jim Furyk, Matt Kuchar, and Bubba
Watson this weekend.
Top scorer: Rory McIlory (+350)
- Quite simply, McIlory is the best player in the world. He blitzed the field at the British Open then held off a strong contingent of contenders to win
the PGA Championship. The Northern Irishman earned two points for the Europeans in the 2010 Ryder Cup and bagged three over the course of the 2012 miracle
at Medinah.
Top American scorer: Rickie Fowler (+450)
- What's not to like about Fowler? He has Ryder Cup experience, in Europe no less, after going 0-1-2 at Celtic Manor in 2010. That performance included a
super-clutch halve against Eduardo Molinari in Sunday singles. Fowler has been awesome on the big stages this season (fifth, second, second, and third in
the four majors).
Champions League
Real Madrid (+350)
- Real is the all-time leader in UEFA Champions League titles with 10, including its triumph last season. Ronaldo and company are tied atop Group B with
Liverpool one match into round-robin action after hammering Basel 5-1 last week.
Bayern Munich (+400)
- The 2013 champions have prevailed five times in their history, tied for third overall with Liverpool behind Madrid and AC Milan. Bayern is off to an
ideal start to its 2014-15 campaign after scoring a late goal to edge fellow powerhouse Manchester City in a Group E showdown.
Barcelona (+550)
- Barcelona finds itself in a relatively tough Group F that also includes Paris Saint-Germain and Ajax, which played to a 1-1 draw last week. As for Barca,
it opened in solid-but-unspectacular fashion by getting past APOEL 1-0.
Chelsea (+600)
- The Blues won it all in 2012, outlasting Bayern Munich in penalty kicks. That was their first Champions League triumph, and they are aiming for a second
with veteran leader Didier Drogba back on board. Chelsea tied Schalke 1-1 last week; all four Group G clubs have one point.
AAA 400
Jimmie Johnson (+400)
- Nobody dominates the AAA 400 at Dover International Speedway quite like J.J. The No. 48 car is the defending champion, and it has won this race five
times-including on three occasions since 2009. This is just what Johnson needs after modest Chase finishes of 12th and fifth in the first two
races.
Brad Keselowski (+500)
- Keselowski triumphed at Dover in 2013, and he looks poised to do it again. The 2012 Sprint Cup champ has five top-eight performances in his past six
outings, including two checkered flags already this month. He currently finds himself atop the standings thanks in part to five wins in 2014.
Jeff Gordon (+600)
- The Rainbow Warrior recorded back-to-back wins at this race back in 1995 and 1996 but has not won it since. He finished fourth at Dover last season
behind Johnson, Dale Earnhardt Jr., and last week's winner, Joey Logano. Gordon has two second-place showings this month but stumbled to 21st
last week in New Hampshire.
Kevin Harvick (+600)
- Harvick currently sits in third in the 2014 standings, just behind Logano and right ahead of Johnson. The No. 4 car looks poised to triumph at Dover for
the first time. It is three for three in top-five performances this month, including a third last weekend at the Sylvania 300. Harvick was sixth at the AAA
400 in 2013.
