PGA Tour Golf Prop Bets: Odds to Win a 2014 Major
by George Monroy - 5/14/2014
Bubba Watson took home the first major of the year with a thrilling performance at Augusta National during the Masters back in April. The 35-year-old pro will be looking to become the first player to win multiple majors in the same year since 2008, when the 2014 US Open rolls around in June.
Golf's biggest name-Tiger Woods-may be out with an injury, but the sport is still as exciting as ever with the influx of young, talented and media-friendly players. The PGA Tour currently has six to 10 players that could win an event on any given Sunday, and wagering on one of them to do so could provide a bettor with an excellent return for a relatively small bet. Let's take a closer look at Sportsbook.ag's prop odds for winning a major in 2014.
Adam Scott: +300 -The world's No. 2 golfer, for quite some time, is finally set to overtake Woods for the No. 1 spot next week. The formula that calculates the rankings will push Scott ahead even though neither player will compete next week. The 33-year-old Aussie won the 2013 Masters and already has three Top-10 finishes in seven events this year. If any player has the chance to break through and have a dominant year, Scott is that player.
Rory McIlroy: +300 -He has consistently finished in, or near, the Top 10 tournament after tournament, but he still has not recaptured the magic of his memorable 2011 and 2012 campaigns. The 25-year-old has four straight Top-10 finishes and six overall during 2014. McIlroy, however, has struggled with slow starts over his last few events and simply doesn't seem locked in or ready to win another major. The young pro is improving after his disastrous 2013, but he might not be a great bet to win a major this year.
Jason Day: +500 -If any player is due for a breakthrough at the majors, it's Day. The young golfer has three runner-up finishes at the Masters and US Open over the last three years and another Top-8 finish at the PGA Championship in 2013. Day won the WGC Accenture Match play tournament in February and finished 20 th at Augusta National. The Australian has excellent value at +500 and is one of those young and hungry players that will almost certainly win a major at some point.
Matt Kuchar: +500 -He is getting hot at just the right time. The 35-year-old pro has a win, a second-, a fourth- and a fifth-place finish (at the Masters no less) since late March and may be ready to grab that huge, life-changing win. Kuchar has seven PGA Tour wins over his 14-year career to go along with multiple Top-10 finishes in every major. The American is one of those players to keep an eye on over the next few months.
Tiger Woods: +700
-At this point its time to stop expecting or betting on Woods to win another major. I am not saying that he never will, but we need to stop expecting it.
Woods was forced to miss the 2014 Masters due to back surgery and will not play the US Open in June. And to make matters even worse, the 14-time major
winner is expected to lose his No. 1 world ranking to Scott next week. A best-case scenario for 2014 would be for Woods to play in two majors, while a
worst-case would be for him to miss the entire season. Wagering on Woods to win a 2014 major and only +700 is simply a bad bet.
