Oklahoma Sooners Odds to Win the 2015 College Football National Championship
by George Monroy - 7/17/2014
The Oklahoma Sooners ended the 2013 season with a 14-point victory over Alabama in the Sugar Bowl that seems to have set the team up as a national powerhouse heading into 2014-the first year of the college football's four-team championship tournament. Quarterback Trevor Knight will be returning to the team after growing into the position late in the year last season. Oklahoma's biggest claim to a potential national title is its favorable Big 12 home schedule, which will see the team play its toughest matchups in its own stadium.
An undefeated or one-loss season is on the table for the Sooners during the 2014 season, but depending upon how things shake out during the year, even two losses maybe enough to get a big conference school an invitation to the four-team playoff. Let's take a closer look at Oklahoma's 2015 College football national title odds with predictions and analysis.
Oklahoma Odds to Win the 2015 National Championship Story Lines
Scheduling will always be one of the biggest hurdles for any program playing in a marquee conference like the Big 12. Last season Oklahoma played most of its tough matchups on the road, and in turn lost a huge game against Baylor that essentially ended the team's national title hopes.
This season Oklahoma will have the luxury of facing Baylor on its own terms at home while also hosting matchups against Kansas State and Tennessee. The Tennessee matchup will come early in the year and will be the first opportunity for the Sooners to make some noise on the national stage. The Volunteers may not be a very good team this season, but the matchup comes three games into the year for Oklahoma and should carry a lot of weight in the rankings should the team get a win.
Oklahoma's redshirt sophomore quarterback, Knight, is expected to have a huge year for the team, and experts believe the he has the potential to be one of the top football players in the nation. Knight struggled during the early part of the 2013 season, but he is being remembered for the spectacular way he ended it in the Sugar Bowl against Alabama. The young quarterback is already receiving praise for his excellent showing at the Manning Passing Academy in early July.
Oklahoma 2015 National Championship Odds and Trends
Oklahoma is currently receiving the seventh-best title odds at +1400, according to the numbers at Sportsbook.ag. The team also has a "will they compete in the playoff semifinal" prop bet, where the "no" is favored at -165. Knight is also receiving early-season Heisman consideration with +1700 odds, but he is a bit of a long shot compared to the other elite quarterbacks on the list.
In 2013 Oklahoma produced an 8-5 ATS record and 7-5-1 totals mark. But those numbers may not be indicative of what is to come in 2014 since the team spent the majority of the season dealing with quarterback issues and Knight did not grow into the starting job until the final games of the year. On defense the Sooners were a Top 25-ranked team in total yards allowed, rushing yards allowed and fewest points allowed.
Oklahoma Odds to Win the 2015 National Championship Predictions
Everything is in play for Oklahoma to have a huge year. The team's quarterback looks poised for a breakout season, and the schedule is favorable but still difficult enough to be impressive. If Oklahoma can build on its 2013 Sugar Bowl performance the squad has an excellent chance at being invited to the national title playoffs. Wagering on Oklahoma to win a national title or make the playoff semifinals are two solid betting options for the year.
