Ohio State Buckeyes Odds to Win the 2015 College Football National Championship
by George Monroy - 7/14/2014
Ohio State third-year coach Urban Meyer has put the Buckeyes in national title contention in each of his first two seasons with the team and expects nothing less for the Big Ten powerhouse in 2014. Meyer coached Ohio State to an undefeated record in 2012, but due to sanctions from the previous year the team was ineligible to compete in the conference championship game or make a BCS bowl game appearance.
In 2013, Ohio State dominated its way to another perfect regular season (12-0 overall, 8-0 in the Big Ten) but dropped its last two games of the year-one during the Big Ten Championship against Michigan State and the other to Clemson in the Orange Bowl. The Buckeyes, however, will be looking to build on the success of those first two seasons under Meyer and enter 2014 with national title aspirations. Let's take a closer look at Ohio State's 2015 National Championship odds with predictions and analysis. All lines come from Sportsbook.ag.
Ohio State Odds to Win the 2015 National Championship Story Lines
Ohio State's offensive centerpiece, senior quarterback Braxton Miller, bypassed on the NFL to return for his final year with the team. Miller underwent shoulder surgery early in the year, which caused him to sit out of spring practice in March and April. However, he is expected to be ready for the start of the 2014 season.
The Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year threw for over 2,000 yards last season and helped the team produce one of the highest-scoring offenses in the nation. Ohio State will also be returning four other starters on offense: two wide receivers, a tight end and a tackle. On defense, the team will be returning seven starters from last season, five of which will be entering their third or fourth year with the team.
Ohio State is set to face four nonconference opponents in 2014 , along with six of its Big Ten East conference mates and two of its Big Ten West rivals in Illinois and Minnesota. The squad will finish off its regular season with a home game against Michigan in late November, which could be huge game in deciding whether or not the team will make a second straight Big Ten Championship appearance.
Ohio State 2015 National Championship Odds and Trends
Ohio State is currently receiving the fifth-best national title odds at +1200, according to Sportsbook.ag. Miller is also receiving the second-best Heisman Trophy odds at +700 and is tied with Oregon's Marcus Mariota and trails Florida States Jameis Winston, who is the favorite to win the award. Ohio State is also receiving odds on a "will they advance to the national title semi finals game" prop bet, with the "no" currently being favored at -150.
The Buckeyes ended the 2013 season with a 10-4 totals records and went "over" in five of six games on the road. The squad was not nearly as dominant against the spread, however, as it went 6-7-1 ATS on the season. Ohio State ranked in the Top 7 in total yards, rushing yards and points scored. On defense the team ranked only 47th in total yards allowed but did give up only 22 points per game.
Ohio State Odds to Win the 2015 National Championship Predictions
Ohio State has only gotten better during each of its first two seasons under Meyer. The former National Championship-winning head coach brings an air of experience and confidence to a talented and experienced squad. Ohio State should be near the top of the rankings once again, and another undefeated regular season is well within reach for the team.
The Buckeyes feel like a shoe in for the BCS national title tournament if they can go through a big-name conference like the Big Ten undefeated or with one loss on the year. The team will probably be the most experienced and talented in the conference. Wagering on Ohio State's National Championship odds feels like a solid bet for the 2014 college football season. The team's schedule and conference is not as tough as some of the other top-ranked schools in the nation.
