NFL Teasers Betting: Best Basic Strategy Options for Week 16
by George Monroy - 12/18/2014

The NFL season is winding down just when basic strategy teaser bets are starting to get hot. The wagers, which are two-team, six-point teasers, went 2-0-1 last week and pushed their five-week record to an excellent 12-1-1 mark. Basic strategy teasers are bets that take advantage of the power of the most common margin of victories during NFL games, which happen to be three and seven, and move certain spreads around those markers.
A basic strategy teaser takes favorites of 7.5 to 8.5 points and moves them down by six and underdogs of 1.5 to 2.5 points and moves them up, while anchoring those spreads with the likelihood of a game being decided by three or seven points. This week there are three excellent basic strategy teaser bets to choose from. Let's take a closer look at the matchups with predictions and analysis.
San Diego Chargers at San Francisco 49ers
Six-point teaser : Chargers +8
San Diego is currently a game out of the final two wild-card spots in the AFC with an 8-6 record but could still sneak into the postseason if the team can win its next two games. The Chargers, however, are in the unfortunate situation of having to play their last two matchups on the road, one against a crumbling San Francisco team and another against a wild-card contender in Kansas City. In short, San Diego still has a lot to play for, as opposed to a 49ers group that continues to be mired in dysfunction and is probably hoping to end the year as soon as possible.
San Francisco has lost three games in a row and has not won a matchup by more than six points since a 14-point Week 6 victory over St. Louis. In fact, the team has won only two games by more than six points all season-the other one being an 11-point victory over Dallas back in Week 1. San Francisco is a broken team with a broken quarterback, and even if it manages to win this game, it will probably be by less than eight. Take San Diego on the teaser.
Philadelphia Eagles at Washington Redskins
Spread : Eagles -8.5
Six-point teaser : Eagles -2.5
Philadelphia dropped a huge game against Dallas last week and now has its back against the wall concerning the postseason race. The Eagles could end the year with an 11-5 record and still miss the playoffs, while an under-.500 team from the NFC South will host a first-round playoff game. Chip Kelly and company still have a lot to play for, while the team's next two opponents are only waiting for the offseason or experimenting with lineups.
Washington is in the middle of trying to figure out its complicated Robert Griffin III mess, and at this point it seems like the team does not even want to win. The Redskins have lost six straight games, five of them by double digits, and are probably a long shot to even cover the original spread against an Eagles team that may be coming for blood. There is no reason to trust Washington at the movement, so betting a possible playoff team is the way to go.
Detroit Lions at Chicago Bears
Spread : Lions 7.5
Six-point teaser : Lions -1.5
Detroit's division title odds got a little brighter after Green Bay's surprising loss to the Buffalo Bill last Sunday, which allowed the team to leapfrog its rival into first place for the moment. This weekend's matchup is a must-win for the Lions, who have won three straight games and seven of their last nine. The team has a Thanksgiving Day blowout victory over Chicago and will probably be able to cover the original spread in this matchup.
The Bears have been dreadful during the last few weeks and have only a single victory over a .500 squad all season-a Week 2 upset over San Francisco. Jay Cutler seems wounded both physically and emotionally, while the team's pass defense in ranked last in the entire NFL. Bettors might be tempted to over think this game and expect Chicago to pull an upset out of their hat, but the truth is there is no reason to trust the Bears. Take the Lions on the teaser and watch the team cruise to a victory.
