NFL Futures Odds: NFC East Season Win Totals Picks
by CarbonSports - 8/11/2014
With the likes of RGIII, Eli Manning, Chip Kelly's explosive offense, and the Dallas Cowboys all in the NFC East together you know this division will see plenty of headlines from the major media outlets. The past few years the winner of this division hasn't been known until the final games of Week 17 have been played. With that kind of parity, this division will be another tight one as Philadelphia tries to be the first team of these four to repeat as division champs since 2004.
The Eagles have the highest number for wins this year (9) with the 'over' favored, but it's two other teams in this division who I expect to rebound well this year and surpass the numbers odds makers have given them. Every team in the NFC East faces those in the NFC West and AFC South this year which is a mixed bag of opportunities, yet, it's these two squads who I believe have the best chance of overcoming those obstacles.
Play #1: New York Giants Over 8 wins (-130)
The Giants finished 3rd in this division last year with a 7-9 record after a disastrous start to the year killed any realistic playoff hopes this franchise had. NY started the year 0-6 SU before finally getting a win in Week 7 against Minnesota. From that point on the Giants went 7-3 SU to finish strong, and coach Tom Coughlin is hoping that momentum continues into this year. NY still has Eli Manning at the helm and he'll always give you an opportunity to win games, but it's going to be all about the start for the Giants again this year.
Schedule-wise the early season sets up well for the Giants. One one of their first seven games is against a playoff team from a season ago (Eagles) and it's here where NY has to string together some wins. After their bye in Week 8 they've got a three-game stretch vs. Indy, Seattle and San Francisco that will be gruesome, but things lighten up after that.
The best part about this schedule for the Giants is the fact that they face all three division rivals on the road in those first seven weeks and get them all at home down the stretch. A 2-1 or better record in those road contests sets them up nicely for the closing weeks and with games against the Jaguars, Titans and Rams mixed in during the final five weeks, the Giants will finish the year strong and could reach a double-digit win total.
Play #2: Washington Redskins Over 7.5 wins (-130)
Last year was horrible for the Redskins all the way around as they finished with a 3-13 SU record, saw RGIII go down with another injury and had to deal with controversies surrounding their coaching staff and team name. Those coaches are gone and the Redskins name is still going through it's battles, but the team on the field this year will be much better than 3-13 this year.
Washington made a big splash during the winter by acquiring WR Desean Jackson from the Eagles and his speed and ability on the outside is a huge plus for this team. Washington also got former Bengals OC Jay Gruden to come in and be the head coach as his offensive philosophies that worked well in Cincinnati should be able to get the best out of Griffin and company. In fact, Gruden moved into the same neighbourhood as his young QB as he goes about building a strong relationship with his young star.
But as bad as last year was for Washington, this year provides plenty of hope. On paper they are nowhere near the 3-13 team we saw last year, and thanks to that dismal record they catch a few breaks this year. They start off with some very winnable games early on @ Houston and vs. Jacksonville to get on a roll before the Eagles, Giants and Seahawks show up on their dance card. That game with Seattle is at home for Washington which means they don't have to deal with that homefield advantage up in Seattle and could prove to be the difference.
Four of their final seven games are at home with home games against division rivals from Philadelphia and Dallas closing out the year. Those contests will be critical in determining who comes out of the NFC East on top and while Washington could be in the mix there, we only need them to likely win one of those two games to secure 8+ wins.
