NCAA Football Betting: Fading the Top 25 Weekly Free Picks
by Aaron Smith - 11/25/2014
The Fade the Top 25 Selections went 2-1 again last week. After a really slow start, the selections have been solid of late. It's interesting to note that after 13 weeks of college football, the selections are right back at the breakeven point. The two winners were very good ones last week with Arkansas and Minnesota both winning outright. The Golden Gophers were a double-digit underdog and won at Nebraska. The Razorbacks were a 3.5 point underdog, and they coasted to a 30-0 win over Ole Miss. The lone loss was on Tennessee as they were upended by Missouri.
The Top 25 was just a bit below the .500 mark against the spread last week. There weren't many marquee matchups in college football last weekend, but that changes in a big way this week. It's rivalry week, and that should mean some tremendous games and more than likely a few surprises along the way.
Play #1- Texas +7 (#312) vs. TCU: I love the job that Charlie Strong is doing at Texas so far. The Longhorns have always had talent, but in past years they have been undisciplined. Strong is changing the culture at Texas, and as the season has moved along you can tell that this team is gaining respect for him. The Longhorns are going to be a really good team next year, and a win in this game would give them tons of momentum heading into next season. Keep in mind that this is a really big game when it comes to recruiting in the state of Texas as well. TCU is certainly a good team, but a closer look at how they have played on the road this year makes me question how ready they are for this game. They needed a late field goal at West Virginia to win by a single point. They fell apart in the fourth quarter at Baylor. They also only won by four points on the road against the lowly Kansas Jayhawks. The pressure is all on TCU in this game, and Texas is going to bring the heat defensively. TCU's offense has been good all year, but this is the most talented defense they have faced. It wouldn't stun me if Texas wins outright, but I like them plus the points.
Play #2- Alabama -9.5 (#402) vs. Auburn: The way Auburn won the Iron Bowl last year had to stick with Alabama for a really long time. Nick Saban and his team would have been on their way to play for another title, and the last-second loss sent their rivals to the title game instead. Auburn played a brutal schedule this year, and they have appeared worn down of late. D'Haquille Williams is playing at less than 100 percent, and he is the Tigers best pass receiver. While Auburn's running attack is terrific, I think Alabama's run defense shows up ready to play this week. They have consistently been one of the best in the nation at stopping the run, and they gave up almost 300 yards on the ground against Auburn last year. The Auburn defense has allowed at least 31 points in five straight games against SEC foes. Auburn will be without two key starters on the defensive line this week. Look for Alabama's offense to put up more points than expected here. The Crimson Tide get a measure of revenge after last year's heartbreaking defeat.
Play #3- Florida +7.5 (#403) vs. Florida State : Florida State has followed the same script every week all year long. The Seminoles don't play up to their potential until the final few minutes of the game. After falling behind a team that is much worse than them, they rally late and pull off a close come-from-behind victory. Ten years ago, Ron Zook was carried off the field by Florida Gators players following a stunning upset over their rivals from Florida State. Will Muschamp will attempt to finish his shorter than expected career at Florida off the same way. The Gators showed they are capable of a big game when they blew out Georgia on a neutral field early this month. It's also important to note that most of these Florida players have made it clear that they love Muschamp. They badly want to give him a signature win to end his time at the program. Florida State is in a dangerous spot here, and they have played with fire all year long. I'm not sure if the Gators can win outright, but I'll take them with the points.
