NBA Playoffs Predictions: Championship and Conference Finals Futures Odds
by George Monroy - 4/17/2014
Once the NBA season ends and the playoff matchups are set, one of the first things a savvy bettor will do is take a look at the futures odds available and try to figure out which teams might have the best value to wager on. This postseason may be one of the most competitive in recent memory as there was no dominant favorite throughout the season.
Miami and Indiana both struggled down the final stretch, while the Western Conference was filled with excellent teams that provided tough stylistic matchups against each other. Before the playoffs begin on Saturday, let's take a closer look at each playoff team's postseason's futures odds with predictions and analysis.
Miami Heat
Title Odds : +220
East Conference Odds : -150
Miami is the favorite to come out of the East and win a third straight NBA title. The team is probably on course for a Conference Finals showdown against Indiana, but it could face a tough second-round matchup against Brooklyn. Making four straight Finals appearances is not a given, which is why the Heat would become only the third team in NBA history to accomplish such a feat.
San Antonio Spurs
Title Odds: +300
West Conference Odds: +140
San Antonio is nothing if not consistent. The team cranks out 60-win seasons and makes deep playoff runs all the time. The trouble for the Spurs is that they cannot beat the Thunder, but the good news is they may not have to if either the Los Angeles or Golden State can pull off an upset in the second round. There is always value wagering on San Antonio to win a title.
Oklahoma City Thunder
Title Odds: +400
West Conference Odds: +180
Oklahoma City is a monster of a team, and after the season that fans just witnessed, it's a bit shocking that they are not the favorite to win the Western Conference and NBA title. Kevin Durant elevated himself to an elite offensive level that few have ever shown. The Thunder currently have the best two-man duo in the game, and outside of a freak injury, similar to last year, the team should be on its way to another Finals appearance-at minimum.
Indiana Pacers
Title Odds: +800
East Conference Odds: +200
There are far too many questions and concerns surrounding the Pacers to take them as a serious championship threat at the moment. The team could put those issues to rest with a dominating first-round performance, but as of now it has fallen apart on offense, and seems to have too many outside issues distracting the team. Keeping the Pacers on permanent upset alert is probably the best course of action with the team.
Los Angeles Clippers
Title Odds : +1100
West Conference Odds : +520
Los Angeles won the most games in franchise history and improved drastically on the defensive end. Blake Griffin evolved from a one-dimensional player who relied on his athleticism and power into a very good overall basketball player that can shoot, dribble and play away from the basket. Rivers' championship pedigree also makes Los Angeles a legitimate title threat, even though the team may have the toughest road to the Finals out of all the teams in the West.
Houston Rockets
Title Odds: +2300
West Conference Odds: +1100
Houston is not guaranteed to make it out of its first-round series against the Trail Blazers, who match up well against the team. History indicates that the No. 4 ssed generally struggles in its first-round matchup against the No. 5 seed. Over the last 10 years, the No. 5 squad has won its opening-round matchup six times. The Rockets, however, do have talent, and it would not be shocking to see the team represent the Western Conference in the NBA Finals.
Brooklyn Nets
Title Odds: +4000
East Conference Odds: +1500
Brooklyn has dollar signs written all over it heading into the playoffs. With Miami and Indiana struggling through the last part of the season, there is no guarantee that they will be able to recover in time, which places much more value on an experienced Nets squad to come out of the East. Brooklyn probably cannot compete with the powerhouse squads from the West in the Finals, but it can win the Eastern Conference and cash a +1500 betting ticket. The Nets currently have all the betting value in the East.
Portland Trail Blazers
Title Odds: +5000
West Conference Odds: +2500
Portland has two great players in LaMarcus Aldridge and Damian Lillard, but just making the playoffs will be more than enough for the team. It is rare in the NBA for an inexperienced team to make deep playoff runs. Oklahoma City was eliminated in the first and second rounds multiple times before the team put it all together. The 2014 postseason will be a learning experience for the Trail Blazers, so do not expect much from the team.
Golden State Warriors
Title Odds: +6000
West Conference Odds: +3000
Golden State pulled off an upset from the No. 6 seed last season and is liable to do it again against the Clippers this year. The biggest problem with Golden State's potential playoff run is that the squad would have to do it without its center Andrew Bogut, who is out indefinitely with a serious rib injury. The other issue for the Warriors is their inconsistency on the offense end. When Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson are off their game, the team struggles to score points.
