NBA Handicapping: Best and Worst ATS Team During Back-to-Backs
by George Monroy - 3/12/2014
The second night of a back-to-back can be a brutal spot for most teams during the already long grind of an NBA season. There are many bettors that love to take advantage of those situations and look for advantageous lines, particularly against old or inexperienced teams. The basketball regular season is nearly over, but it is never too late to look for a solid spot by betting on, or against, certain teams during back-to-back situations. Let's take a closer look at the best and worst ATS teams when playing on consecutive nights.
The Best
Boston : 11-5, 68 percent : the Celtics are surprisingly the best ATS team during the second night of back-to-backs. The team loses those games by an average of 5.5 points but covers the spreads by an average of 2.4 points. Boston may be bad, but the team is young and full of energy.
Oklahoma City : 6-3, 66.7 percent : the Thunder have played the fewest back-to-backs of any team in the league and also have the one of the best records. The squad covers the spreads by an average of 1.1 points and is simply a very good team in nearly every area of the game.
Portland: 11-6 64.7 percent : the Trail Blazers are being led by a young core group of players and perform well when playing without any rest. The squad covers the spread by an average of 5.9 points, which is the best mark in the league for teams playing on the second night of a back-to-back.
Washington : 10-6, 62.5 percent : the Wizards are another very good team in this situation and cover the spread by an average of 3.8 points per game. The squad is usually an underdog during those spots but summons up the energy to either win outright or at least keep games close.
Houston : 10-6, 62.5 percent : the Rockets believe they are a title contender and have played every game with the same type of energy and championship intent. The team is usually a favorite during the second night of a back-to-back and manages to cover the spread by 0.5 points.
The Worst
Atlanta : 6-11, 35.3 percent : the Hawks lose by an average of 2.7 points per game on the second night of a back-to-back and fail to cover the spread by 1.1 points. Atlanta is not a very good ATS team in any category and is also sitting below .500 SU. Wagering against the squad in any situation is probably a decent idea.
Philadelphia : 6-11, 35.3 percent : the 76ers have the worst record in the NBA and, not surprisingly, are one of the worst teams in this situation as well. Philadelphia loses by an average of 13.6 points and fails to cover the spread by 4.6 points.
Charlotte: 7-13, 35 percent : The Bobcats are one of the best overall ATS teams in the league with a 35-26-3 record, but they are too undisciplined to carry over that solid record into back-to-back situations. The team loses by an average of 5.9 points and fails to cover the spread by an average of 0.9 points.
Indiana: 6-12, 33.3 percent : the Pacers, who currently have the second-best record in the NBA and an over-.500 ATS record, are surprisingly one of the worst teams at covering spreads in this spot. Indiana fails to cover spreads on the second night of a back-to-back by 4.7 points.
Denver: 2-8, 20 percent : the Nuggets have the second-worst ATS record in the league, so these numbers are not shocking for bettors who have been paying attention. Denver fails to cover the spread by a whopping 8.4 points per game and is the absolute worst team to bet on when playing consecutive games.
