Miguel Cabrera Odds to Win the 2014 AL MVP with MLB Picks and Predictions
by George Monroy - 3/28/2014
Miguel Cabrera has a knack for breaking records. Two years ago the Detroit Tigers' first baseman became the first triple-crown winner in over 45 years and then followed up that historic performance by nearly winning it again the very next year. Now, Cabrera is looking to become only the second man in baseball history to win three straight MVP awards and the first since Barry Bonds won four straight beginning in 2001.
The 11-year veteran must be entering the season believing that he is the best player in the league, because on top his gaudy statistics over the last few years, Cabrera's most cherished accomplishment may be the fact that he just locked up the largest contract in baseball history and will receive $292 million over the next 10 years. Let's take a closer look at Cabrera's 2014 American League MVP odds with picks, analysis and predictions.
Miguel Cabrera Odds to Win 2014 AL MVP Story Lines
Cabrera already has back-to-back MVP awards on his resume and became the first player since Frank Thomas in 1993 and 1994 to win consecutive awards in the American League. Last season the slugger managed to match his historic numbers from 2012, his triple-crown winning campaign, despite playing 13 less games. And at this point, there are few things that suggest Cabrera's output will decrease this season.
Detroit is, again, one of the favorites to win the World Series and is receiving the second-best title odds right behind the Los Angeles Dodgers. The squads' status as one of the elite team's in the league will work in favor of Cabrera's MVP chances this season, even though his play on the field will do most of the talking.
The first baseman recently agreed to an eight-year-contract extension that could be worth up to $352 million if Detroit decides to pick up its option for two extra years on the deal. On paper, singing Cabrera, who turns 31 next month, to a 10-year deal may not seem like the most prudent of moves, but the veteran has been durable through his career, playing in an average of 157 games per season.
Miguel Cabrera 2014 AL MVP Odds and Key Stats
Cabrera is currently receiving the second-best AL MVP odds at +600, according to BetOnline . The reigning MVP winner is coming off a two-year span where he hit 44 home runs in each season and drove in 139 and 137 RBIs. Last season Cabrera played in only 148 games, which is the lowest total for the player since his rookie year in Florida.
In 2013, Cabrera took 555 at bats and produced 193 hits and 103 runs with 90 walks. In 2012 he took 622 at bats and produced 205 hits and 109 runs on 66 walks. The Tigers are receiving +700 World Series odds, +350 AL pennant odds and -200 AL Central division odds.
Miguel Cabrera 2014 AL MVP Picks and Predictions
The Los Angeles Angels' young star, Mike Trout, is the AL MVP favorite and may be considered the best all-around player by many experts. However, Cabrera's stranglehold on the MVP award doesn't come from his gaudy numbers at the plate, but instead it comes from his team's overall dominance during the regular season. The simple fact that Detroit is expected to be a World Series contender, while the Angels are not even expected to make the playoffs, will be a huge factor when deciding who wins the award.
If Trout and Cabrera's number are similar, yet their respective team's records are 20-something games apart, there would really be no choice but to award the MVP honors to Detroit's first baseman. Cabrera is on an historic run, and expect it to continue in 2014 with a third MVP award for the former Triple Crown winner.
