Case of the Mondays: Mixed Elite Eight Fortunes for Big Ten
by Ricky Dimon - 3/31/2014
Raise your hand if you had one Big Ten representative in the Final Four, with that representative being Wisconsin…. Didn't think so. While the Badgers made it after an overtime thriller against Arizona, both Michigan and Michigan State are going home following Elite Eight action. The Wolverines lost in the final seconds to Kentucky, and the Spartans were bounced in a close one by Connecticut.

Izzo's seniors
. For the first time in history, Michigan State seniors who played four seasons for head coach Tom Izzo did not make a Final Four during their college
careers. Keith Appling and Adreian Payne took part in their final game on Sunday, a 60-54 loss to Connecticut in the East Regional final at Madison Square
Garden. Appling made a crucial blunder, fouling the Huskies' Shabazz Napier on a three-point attempt with 37.6 seconds remaining. Napier made all three to
put UConn ahead by five. Since Izzo arrived in the fall of 1995, the Spartans reached the Final Four in 1999, 2000, 2001, 2005, 2009, and 2010. At last, a
stretch with no such appearances has reached four. Connecticut is a +600 underdog against Florida, and it is +800 to win the National Championship.
Arizona
. Well, that is not exactly what University of Arizona students could have had in mind for their Saturday night. Instead of celebrating a Final Four berth
for their West Regional top-seeded team, they rioted after the Wildcats' 64-63 loss to Wisconsin. Tucson law enforcement made a total of 15 arrests on or
near campus. Wisconsin is a +2.5 underdog against Kentucky and it is a +350 third choice to
win the National Championship.
Clayton Kershaw
. The 2013 National League Cy Young Award winner is on the disabled list for the first time in his seven-year career. Los Angeles placed Kershaw on the
15-day DL over the weekend due to a swollen muscle in his left upper back. He had already been scratched from the Dodgers' U.S. opener on Sunday at San
Diego but had been planning to return on Friday for their home opener against San Francisco. Kershaw went 6.2 innings and allowed only one run in a 3-1
regular-season victory for L.A. over Arizona on March 22 in Sydney, Australia. The Dodgers are +550 favorites to win the World Series.
Detroit Pistons
. Leave it to the Pistons to stop the Philadelphia 76ers from breaking the NBA's (and all of major professional sports) all-time record for consecutive
losses. Philadelphia was tied with the 2010-11 Cleveland Cavaliers (and also the 1976-77 Tampa Bay Bucs) at 26 straight setbacks, but it had no trouble
stomping Detroit 123-98 on Saturday night. The Sixers had last won a game on Jan. 29, a 95-94 victory at Boston. As for the Pistons, they are 26-47 and 1-8
in their last nine games after dropping their last two by a combined 57 points. Detroit is a -6 home favorite over Milwaukee on Monday.
Rafael Nadal
. Nadal has now been to the Miami title match four times and he has still never won it. The world No. 1 did not come close this time around, going down to
arch rival and second-ranked Novak Djokovic 6-3, 6-3 on Sunday afternoon. Nadal also finished runner-up at the event in 2005, 2008, and 2011. Djokovic, who
has triumphed in Miami four times, continues to close the gap on the No. 1 ranking having also lifted the Indian Wells trophy earlier this month. But
here's some good news for Nadal: the clay-court season is here. Nadal is a -135 favorite at Bovada Sportsbook to win the French Open; Djokovic is a +175 second choice.
Jimmie Johnson.
Johnson seemed to be on his way to a win in Martinsville on Sunday. The No. 48 led 11 different times for a total of 296 laps, including when he took the
lead from eventual winner Kurt Busch with 17 laps remaining. Busch, however, came up with a reversal and passed Johnson with 10 laps to go. The older Busch
brother held on for victory as Johnson finished second ahead of third-place Dale Earnhardt Jr. Johnson has four top-10 performances in six Sprint Cup
starts this season, but he has not yet found victory lane. Johnson is a +250 favorite at Carbon Sports to win the Sprint Cup championship.
Phil Mickelson
. Tiger Woods' struggles are the most well-documented on the PGA Tour at the moment, but Mickelson's should not be overlooked. Lefty has now withdrawn from
two tournaments already in 2014 after pulling out in the middle of last week's Valero Texas Open. He made the cut on the number then withdrew 11 holes into
Saturday's round due to a strained oblique muscle. It's especially concerning with the Masters, en event Mickelson has won three times, less than two weeks
away. Mickelson is +2000 to win another green jacket
; Tiger is a +1000 favorite.
Chelsea . Chelsea is out of the top spot on the Premier League table, and it is mainly because of a shocking result on Saturday. The Blues lost 1-0 at Crystal Palace, which is danger of being relegated out of the league as one of the bottom three teams. Crystal Palace is in 16th place even after its huge win, while Chelsea is now second behind Liverpool. Manchester City, which tied Arsenal 1-1 on Saturday, is slowly closing the gap. City has 67 points, two back of Chelsea of four south of Liverpool. Man City is a -125 favorite to win the Premier League title, per Bovada Sportsbook.
