Case of the Mondays: Red, White, and Feeling Blue

Every Olympics ends in ceremonious fashion, by definition (see: the Closing Ceremonies). But it did not end that way for Team USA, which led the overall medal count at times only to finish second to host Russia in that department (28 to the Russians’ 33). The Americans earned nine gold medals, fourth best behind Russia, Norway and Canada. It wasn’t a bad haul, but it also wasn’t ideal.... Just ask the men’s hockey team.

Team USA. For almost a week, U.S. men’s hockey was the toast of the town—well, maybe not of Sochi given that it took down the Russians during group play. The Americans also handled Slovenia, Slovakia, and the Czech Republic en route to a 4-0 record and a semifinal berth. Everything changed with a step up in competition as Team USA did not score a single time against either Canada (1-0) or Finland (5-0) in the medal rounds. Only shootout hero T.J. Oshie will benefit greatly from the Olympic experience. His St. Louis Blues are +500 co-favorites to win the Stanley Cup.
Jim Boeheim. Boeheim blew a gasket at the end of Saturday’s ACC showdown between Syracuse and Duke at Cameron Indoor Stadium. With the Orange trailing by two, C.J. Fair was called for a charge with 10.4 seconds remaining while going up for what would have been a tying layup without a call or even a go-ahead layup had it been called a defensive block instead of an offensive foul. An expletive-shouting, jacket-ripping Boeheim stormed on the court and was promptly hit with two technicals and an ejection. The Blue Devils made six of eight free-throws in the final 10.4 seconds to seal a 66-60 victory. ‘Cuse is a -4.5 favorite at Maryland on Monday night.
LeBron James. LeBron’s team picked up a win on Sunday night against Chicago, but he watched it from a bench due to a broken nose. He sustained the injury last Thursday in a victory over Oklahoma City. LeBron has to hope this does not halt the momentum he had as Miami’s superstar had scored at least 33 points in each of his last four games. Fun fact: as a result of James’ absence, former No. 1 overall draft pick Greg Oden made his first NBA start since December of 2009. Oden scored five points and grabbed five rebounds in 13 minutes during the Heat’s 93-79 win. Miami is a +180 favorite to win the NBA Championship.
James Wilder Jr.. Count the former Florida State running back among the NFL combine losers over the weekend. Wilder clocked a 4.86 in the 40-yard dash, performing considerably worse than expected in that department. The good news is that he stands at close to 6-foot-3 and 232 pounds, so he is a power back. Still, the time was a disappointment even for a player of his size at the position. Wilder, who also underwhelmed in some other combine drills, rushed 81 times for 563 yards (7.0 per carry) as a junior in 2013 and he scored 21 total touchdowns in his last two seasons with the Seminoles. The “over/under” on NFL Network analyst Rich Eisen’s 40 time is 6.03 seconds (the over is -145).
Victor Dubuisson. Dubuisson had a nice little weekend for himself, but the string of coming oh so close may be felt for at least one more day or so. The Frenchman made a surprise run to the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship before losing to Jason Day in an instant classic on Sunday afternoon. Dubuisson first came back from being two holes down with two to play in regulation, draining a 15-foot birdie putt on the 17th just to get to No. 18. That eventually set the stage for miracle-working, as the underdog twice got up-and-down from the desert—complete with rocks and cacti impeding his lies—for match-saving pars. However, Dubuisson had chances to be the aggressor and steal the title from Day, but he failed to convert a relatively routine (by his lofty standards) up-and-down on the 21st hole and he left a 20-foot birdie putt just short on the 22nd hole. Day finally won it birdie to par on the 23rd. Day is +2000 to win the Masters.
Danica Patrick. Patrick briefly led Sunday’s Daytona 500 on lap 114, making for the second straight installment of the Great American Race in which she had the lead at one point or another. However, the lone female driver in the race wrecked on lap 146 and therefore finished in an official position of 40th place—54 laps off the pace. Of course, it was no fault of Patrick’s. Kevin Harvick made contact with Brian Scott, and the domino effect sent other cars into Patrick and Patrick into the wall. Dale Earnhardt Jr. captured the checkered flag for his second Daytona 500 victory, 10 years after his first. Earnhardt opened this season at +1000 to win the Sprint Cup title.
FC Barcelona. For the first time this season, Barcelona is trailing Real Madrid on the La Liga table. Lionel Messi and company had some momentum after blanking Manchester City 2-0 in leg one of a Champions League round-of-16 matchup last Tuesday, but it did not carry over to a date with Real Sociedad on Saturday. Messi scored an equalizer in the 36th minute before Sociedad notched two second-half goals in a five-minute span on its way to a 3-1 upset victory. Real Madrid took care of Elche 3-0 to take a three-point lead over Barca and Atletico Madrid through 25 games. Barcelona is a +350 second choice behind Bayern Munich to win the Champions League title.
