Case of the Mondays: Giant Disaster on Sunday Night Football
by Ricky Dimon - 10/13/2014
Sunday Night Football could not have gone any worse for the New York Giants. They did not score a single point against Philadelphia in a blowout loss. Adding insult to injury, or vise versa, wide receiver Victor Cruz went down with a torn patellar tendon. There were also hard times on the hardwood, the diamond, and even on the NASCAR track during what was a wild weekend in sports.

New York Giants . Losing 27-0 is bad under any circumstances, but it’s even worse when it comes at the hands of a hated division rival. That’s what happened to New York on Sunday night as Tom Couglin’s crew was taken to the woodshed despite winning the turnover battle (one to the Eagles’ two). Cruz, meanwhile, crumpled to the ground with his injury when he otherwise almost certainly would have made a routine touchdown catch. The 2012 Pro Bowler will miss the rest of the season, which is certainly not over for the Giants but took a devastating turn while halting a three-game winning streak. Their 3-3 record leaves them two games back of NFC East foes Philadelphia and Dallas (5-1). The Eagles are +1800 to win the Super Bowl; Denver is a +400 favorite.
Mike Nugent . The highest-scoring overtime tie in NFL history took place on Sunday, and it was almost entirely thanks to Nugent. After Cincinnati and Carolina exchanged field goals on the first two possessions of the extra frame, the Bengals were on course to treat their home fans to a thrilling win with a 36-yard field-goal attempt on the last play of the game. Positioned perfectly in the middle of the field, Nugent botched the chip-shot well right to leave the contest tied 37-37. The former Ohio State Buckeye has missed kicks in four of five games this season and six in total (11 for 17). Cincinnati has plunged to +900 to win the AFC Championship; the Broncos are +160 favorites.
TCU . No team’s collapse at either the professional or college level during the weekend was more monumental than that of the Horned Frogs. After returning an interception for a touchdown, they had a seemingly insurmountable three-touchdown lead (58-37) over host Baylor with less than 12 minutes remaining in the game. But it was far from over. The rest of the game went Baylor TD, TCU punt, Baylor TD, TCU punt, Baylor TD, TCU turnover on downs, and Baylor FG. The visitors trailed for zero seconds of the entire game, only with the clock at 0:00 as the Bears pulled off a 61-58 miracle. Baylor is +1500 to win the National Championship; Michigan State is a +650 favorite.
Baltimore Orioles . Until a few days ago, the Orioles could not have been feeling any better about themselves. They had coasted to the American League East title, swept the Tigers clean out of Detroit, then got home-field advantage in the ALCS when Kansas City ousted the L.A. Angels. What a difference two days makes. Baltimore lost each of the first two games against the Royals at Camden Yards, 8-6 in 10 innings on Friday and 6-4 on Saturday. Both contests were tied going into the ninth, but the home team could not get a desired result out of either one. Kansas City has already set the all-time single-season postseason record with four extra-inning victories. K.C. is -425 to finish off the ALCS and reach the World Series.
Spain . From 2008 through 2012, Spain’s national soccer team won its three most important championships: Euro 2008, the 2010 World Cup, and Euro 2012. Suddenly, the once-dominant force appears to have hit rock-bottom. Spain got unceremoniously bounced from this summer’s world cup in the group stage and is now struggling in Euro 2016 qualification. It fell to Slovakia 2-1 last Thursday for its first Euro qualifying loss since October of 2006. The Spaniards at least managed to beat Luxembourg as qualification continued on Sunday. With Manchester United keeper David de Gea in for Iker Casillas, Spain cruised to a 4-0 win. The Spaniards are +500 to win the entire tournament; Germany is a +300 favorite.
Brad Keselowski . Saturday night at Charlotte Motor Speedway provided fans with plenty of entertainment and even some extracurricular activity in addition to a crucial race in the Chase for the Sprint Cup. However, it was a disaster for some of NASCAR’s best drivers. Keselowski finished 16th, Jimmie Johnson came in 17th, and Dale Earnhardt Jr. crossed the line in 20th. Each of those three men must win in Talladega in order to clinch a spot in the next round of the chase. As for Keselowski, he caused a post-race pileup on pit road and then got into verbal and physical confrontations with Denny Hamlin and Matt Kenseth. Harvick and Jeff Gordon are +250 co-favorites to win the Sprint Cup.
Kevin Durant . We won’t know for about eight months if this is finally going to be the Oklahoma City Thunder’s year or not, but it is off to an inauspicious start no matter what. Durant felt pain in his right foot during a recent practice and was diagnosed on Sunday with a “Jones fracture” (broken bone at the base of the small toe), which generally sidelines an athlete for six to eight weeks. With the regular season less than three weeks away, that will potentially leave Durant out for the first month of the 2014-15 campaign. The superstar small forward earned NBA MVP honors last season while averaging 32.0 points per game. The Thunder’s “over/under” regular-season win total is 53.5.
