Case of the Mondays: NFL Players Dropping Like Flies
by Ricky Dimon - 9/15/2014
Last week was unquestionably one of the worst in NFL history. Players were their own worst enemies, not necessarily sealing their own fates but at the very
least altering the course of their careers-and even lives. It has also been a disastrous few days in Georgia, where the Hawks' general manager took a leave
of absence, the Bulldogs lost a thriller at South Carolina, the Falcons got blown out at Cincinnati, and the Braves got swept by-gasp!-Texas.

NFL
. Well, that's probably not exactly what Roger Goodell had in mind for the beginning of September. Ray Rice's elevator video came out, resulting in an
indefinite suspension for the former Ravens' running back and a he-said, she-said war between the NFL and authorities over whether or not NFL higher-ups
(Goodell) had seen the video. Vikings' running back Adrian Peterson was indicted on child-abuse charges, Panthers' defensive end Greg Hardy is facing
domestic-violence charges, and 49ers' defensive end Ray McDonald is under investigation for felony domestic violence. Denver and Seattle are +500 co-favorites to win the Super Bowl.
Robert Griffin III
. Death, taxes, and RG3 getting injured. As if we needed a reminder that those are life's three certainties, the Redskins' quarterback went down with a
dislocated ankle in Week 2. Kirk Cousins looked good in a 41-10 rout of Jacksonville, so the news was not all bad for Washington. But it's all bad for
Griffin, who could be out for the year. The former Baylor star played in 13 games last season but never got in a groove while recovering from a torn ACL
suffered at the end of his rookie campaign. The 'Skins are +500 to win the NFC East.
Georgia
. Just when the Bulldogs were thinking they might be hot stuff this year after rolling over Clemson in their season opener, they came crashing back to
Earth on Saturday at the hands of Clemson's biggest rival. South Carolina, which got blown out by Texas A&M in its first game before an uninspiring win
over East Carolina, edged Georgia 38-35 in Columbia. The Gamecocks racked up 447 yards of total offense and benefited from a late missed field goal from 28
yards out by UGA's Marshall Morgan to hang on for victory. The Bulldogs are +1800 to win the National Championship; Florida State is a +550 favorite.
Atlanta Braves
. What might be the only thing worse than being the worst team in the league? Perhaps being a team in playoff contention that gets swept by the worst team
in the league. Atlanta did just that over the weekend, losing three in a row at lowly Texas. Even after the sweep, the Rangers are dead last in Major
League Baseball-with room to spare behind everyone else except Colorado. As for the Braves, they are just one game over .500 at 75-74 after getting blown
out by Texas 10-3 on Sunday. They are 4-10 in their last 14 contents and 10.5 games back of Washington in the NL East in addition to a four-game deficit
behind Pittsburgh for the National League's second wild card. How far has Atlanta fallen? It was tied with the Nats atop the division at the all-star
break. The Braves (Santana) are +105 home underdogs against the Nationals
(Strasburg) on Monday.
Arsenal
. There's no shame in losing at Manchester City, but Arsenal had a golden chance for what would have been a huge English Premier League victory on
Saturday. After trailing 1-0 at halftime, the Gunners scored two goals in an 11-minute span and had a lead with fewer than seven minutes remaining. Man
City, however, notched a late equalizer when Martin Demichelis found the back of the net following a mix-up by the Arsenal defense. Arsenal has now drawn
three straight Premier League matches. It is in seventh place on the EPL table through four matches with six points, exactly half the total of
league-leading Chelsea.
Kevin Harvick
. Harvick has never won a Sprint Cup championship, but he finished third in 2010, 2011, and 2013. The 2007 Daytona 500 champion sits in fourth this year
after missing out on a checkered-flag chance at the chase-opening race in Chicago on Sunday. Harvick and Kyle Larson shared a side-by-side lead before
Keselowski charged through the middle with 19 laps remaining. From there, a second-place battle ensure between Harvick, Larson, and Jeff Gordon before
Harvick faded to fifth. Keselowski, the 2012 champion, owns the points lead ahead of Gordon and Joey Logano. The No. 2 car was +400 to win the Sprint Cup
prior to its triumph on Sunday.
Jim Furyk
. Furyk finished fourth in the FedEx Cup standings. With a result like that, you would expect to hear that the 44-year-old veteran won multiple times on
the PGA Tour in 2014. In actuality, Furyk did not win a single time. He placed in the Top 10 in 10 of 22 tournaments, including in four of his last five
and six of his last eight. He posted runner-ups at the Wells Fargo Championship, the Players Championship, the RBC Canadian Open, and the Tour
Championship. Furyk contended from start to finish on Sunday at East Lake, but bogeys on the 17th and 18th holes ended his hopes as
Billy Horschel captured both the tournament title and the FedEx Cup. Team USA, which includes Furyk but lacks Horschel, is a +180 underdog to win the Ryder
Cup later this month.
