Case of the Mondays: From Bad to Worse in San Francisco
by Ricky Dimon - 12/8/2014
Just when you thought it could not get any worse for the San Francisco 49ers, it did. In Week 12 they barely scraped past the Washington Redskins-arguably
the worst team in the NFL right now-by a score of 17-13. The Niners followed that up on Thanksgiving with an anemic 19-3 loss to Seattle in which the
Seahawks allowed only 164 yards of total offense. Then on Sunday, San Fran fell to none other than the Oakland Raiders.

San Francisco 49ers
. That should just about do it for the Niners. They are now 7-6, which for those counting means at best they can finish is 10-6. The top three wild-card
contenders are all 9-4, and at least two of the three should go no worse than 11-5. Dallas has a virtual walkover against Washington in Week 17 and
entertains Indianapolis at home, Detroit still gets to play Minnesota and Chicago, and Seattle hosts both San Francisco and St. Louis. But would the 49ers
even want to make the playoffs at this point? After all, they just lost to an Oakland team that had been 1-11 and seven days earlier was
humiliated 52-0 by the Rams. San Fran is +7500 to win the NFC Championship.
Drew Brees
. San Fran could conceivably go 10-6 (although 7-9 is far more likely) and miss the playoffs. New Orleans could go 6-10 and make the playoffs. But that's
just about where the good news ends for Brees and company. This was supposed to be the week the Saints climbed to the top of the NFC South (insert LOL
here) and took control of a spot in the postseason. They were hosting a Carolina squad that was 3-8-1 and then, with a half-game lead over Atlanta in hand,
would watch the Falcons get clobbered at Green Bay on Monday night. Well, that was the plan. Instead, New Orleans got destroyed by the Panthers 41-10 and
will still be in second place in the worst division in all of sports regardless of Atlanta's result at Lambeau Field. Brees completed just 29 of 49 passes
for 235 yards with one interception and one meaningless late touchdown as the Saints dropped an incredible fourth consecutive home game. The Saints are
-160 to win the NFC South.
TCU
. The Horned Frogs were No. 3 in the College Football Playoff rankings heading into this past weekend. They eradicated Iowa State 55-3 and promptly plunged
to No. 6, leaving them well outside the all-important field of four. There are probably some reasonably coherent arguments that would make sense of such a
development, but none would be of any consolation to TCU. Although the team's consolation prize is an intriguing Peach Bowl against Ole Miss, its National
Championship hopes are officially over now that the semifinals are confirmed to feature Alabama vs. Ohio State and Oregon vs. Florida State. The Frogs are -3.5 favorites over Ole Miss.
Melvin Gordon
. There goes the Big Ten Championship, there goes the College Football Playoff, and there goes the Heisman Trophy. That may have been what Gordon was
thinking as his Wisconsin squad was getting blown out 59-0 by Ohio State at Lucas Oil Stadium. The Badgers had little shot at a berth in the playoff, and
Gordon's Heisman chances were just marginally better after Marcus Mariota's impressive display on Friday in Oregon's rout of Arizona, but there was hope
nonetheless. Now Gordon will visit New York simply for Mariota's Heisman party, and Wisconsin will have to regroup for the Outback Bowl against Auburn.
Ohio State is +550 to win the National Championship.
Andre Drummond
. The Pistons have 99 problems, and their star player snapchatting while driving at 96 miles per hour is one. Drummond posted a photo with his hand on the
wheel, what appears to be the Palace of Auburn Hills in the distance, and the speedometer showing "96 mph." The only thing his team is speeding toward is
the worst record in the NBA-yes, at this rate perhaps even worse than the Philadelphia 76ers in the very near future. Detroit has lost 12 in a row and has
dropped to 3-18 overall after blowing an 11-point lead against Oklahoma City on Sunday. Philadelphia, meanwhile, has somehow won two of its last three
games (including over the Pistons on Saturday, when Drummond scored just seven points) and is only a half-game back at 2-18. OKC is +350 to win the
Northwest Division.
NCAAB favorites
. New Jersey Institute of Technology? What the hell? NJIT is a commuter school whose "arena" is basically a fitness center, and its basketball
team not only beat Michigan on Saturday but won in Ann Arbor. It was an all-around bizarre weekend on the college hardwood. Yale upset
UConn on Friday night, Georgia Tech (to USC Upstate) and Miami (to Green Bay) joined the Wolverines in the circle of embarrassment on Saturday, and
Virginia Tech went down to Radford on Sunday. Kentucky, which took care of its business against Eastern Kentucky, is +120 to win the National Championship.
Chelsea
. Perhaps the only first-place team less convincing than the Atlanta Falcons right now is Chelsea. Actually, that's a stretch-a big stretch. Still, the
Blues are slumping, and they have loosened their once-firm grip on first place in the English Premier League. They smoked Tottenham Hotspur 3-0 last
Wednesday, but that was preceded by a lackluster 0-0 draw against Sunderland on Nov. 29 and followed by a 2-1 loss to Newcastle United on Saturday.
Chelsea's first setback of the season leaves it with 36 points, still best on the table but a mere three ahead of second-place Manchester City-which has
won four in a row and has not lost an EPL match since Oct. 25. The Blues are -140 to beat Sporting Lisbon in Champions League action on Wednesday.
