Back to the Futures: California Chrome Goes for Leg Two
by Ricky Dimon - 5/13/2014
California Chrome is one-third of the way to horse racing's Triple Crown. He will go for the second jewel this week at the Preakness Stakes, which is
generally an easier task for the Kentucky Derby champion than the finale at the Belmont in New York. Meanwhile, Jordan Spieth is back in action on the
links after another near-miss at The Players Championship.

Preakness Stakes
California Chrome (-160)
- California Chrome's triumph at the Kentucky Derby gave him six straight victories. He won by more than a length in the Run for the Roses, and he
prevailed by more than five lengths at the Santa Anita Derby. Right now, Chrome looks like a serious crown contender.
Social Inclusion (+500)
- Social Inclusion did not race in Kentucky, so he should be well-rested. In fact, he has made only three career starts. He was the favorite at the Wood
Memorial but tired down the stretch and finished third. Social Inclusion was the first of the Preakness entrants to arrive in Baltimore.
Danza (+700)
- The horse named after actor Tony Danza was a trendy pick to win the Kentucky Derby. He ran a solid race at +800 odds and finished third, three lengths
behind the champion. Danza won the Arkansas Derby earlier this spring, another reason why he is considered a top contender.
Ride On Curlin (+1000)
- As one might guess, Ride On Curlin was sired by Curlin-the 2007 Preakness winner who also finished third at the Kentucky Derby and second at the Belmont
Stakes. With Calvin Borel on top and hugging the rail, Ride On Curlin finished seventh two weeks ago in Kentucky.
Lakers head coach in 2014-15
Kevin Ollie (+350)
- Ollie's stock could not be any higher after taking Connecticut on a surprising run to the National Championship. More than a few NBA teams are reportedly
set to go hard after a guy who played for 11 NBA teams during his career. Ollie is denying L.A. rumors, but he's obviously going to deny anything and
everything until something is confirmed.
George Karl (+600)
- Karl confirmed last week that he wants to get back into coaching. At 63 years old and having defeated cancer twice, he looks like he has some years left
in him. Cleveland and Detroit are also possibilities. It sounds like Karl has not yet talked to the Lakers, but he is expecting a call.
Tom Thibodeau (+650)
- Thibodeau has three years left on his contract with the Bulls, but he may be tired of being with a team that would be a contender year in and year out if
it had starting point guard Derrick Rose at 100 percent. Golden State is also interested, which is not surprising given Thibs' defensive prowess.
Mark Jackson (+650)
- All Jackson did was guide the Warriors to three of their best seasons in recent history. Of course, Stephen Curry got most of the credit for that from
the front office given that Jackson often clashed with the higher-ups. Cleveland, though, may be a more likely destination for Jackson than L.A.
NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year
(odds provided by Bovada Sportsbook)
Mike Evans (+300)
- Evans will have a chance to contribute right away after being the seventh overall pick of the Tampa Bay Bucs, who desperately needed help at wide
receiver. It looks like the Bucs are sticking with quarterback Mike Glennon, who will now be tasked with putting the ball in Evans' hands after Johnny
Manziel did it last year at Texas A&M.
Sammy Watkins (+400)
- The Cleveland Browns and general manager Ray Farmer will be in hot water if Watkins plays his way to this award. Cleveland traded the No. 4 overall pick
to Buffalo, which promptly snagged Watkins. The former Clemson star is without question the most dangerous athlete on offense in this draft class.
Johnny Manziel (+750)
- When Tampa Bay and Cleveland (with its first pick) passed on Manziel, it was clear a free-fall was in progress. The Browns still got their quarterback of
the future, and now they got him with a chip on his shoulder at pick No. 22. The team's "starter" is Brian Hoyer, not exactly someone whom Manziel should
have difficulty surpassing.
Brandin Cooks (+1000)
- Could a rookie wide receiver ask for anything more than to be drafted by the New Orleans Saints? Not only does it mean he is going to a pretty good team,
but he also gets to catch passes from Drew Brees. At 5-foot-10 but with unreal speed, Cooks should have a field day in the slot.
Byron Nelson Championship
Jordan Spieth (+1000)
- The 20-year-old has not yet won this season, but he has been gaining valuable experience. He has eight top-12 finishes since the start of 2014, and he
played in the final pairing at both the Masters and last week's Players Championship. Spieth may be due when plays at home this week in Dallas.
Matt Kuchar (+1200)
- If anyone is in contention more often than Spieth, it's Kuchar. The former Georgia Tech standout has finished in the top 10 of a ridiculous nine
tournaments in his last 13 starts. He placed a decent 17th at the Players after winning in Hilton Head and he is third in the FedEx Cup standings.
Dustin Johnson (+1400)
- Johnson may be No. 1 in the WAGs department among golfers, and he is not lagging far behind in the FedEx Cup race (sixth). However, the huge-hitting
29-year-old has cooled off considerably of late since a hot start to his 2014 campaign in January and February.
Jimmy Walker (+1500)
- Walker has two wins in 2014 and three this golf season if you count another one from the fall swing. The 36-year-old also finished T-8 at the Masters and
T-6 at The Players Championship to maintain his spot atop the FedEx Cup standings. He was T-27 last year at the Byron Nelson.
