Back to the Futures: Getting Back on the Gridiron
by Ricky Dimon - 8/4/2014
The Hall of Fame Game kicked off the 2014 NFL Preseason on Sunday night, with the New York Giants edging the Buffalo Bills 17-13. Six more contests are on
Thursday's schedule, an additional six will be held on Friday, and Saturday has four on the docket. We are also less than a month away from meaningful,
regular-season action on the college gridiron. Yes, football is back, and it's here to stay.
Odds provided by Sportsbook.ag
NFL MVP
Peyton Manning (+350)
- Manning is a now a five-time MVP after rolling to the honor in stunning fashion last season. Last season Manning passed for 5,477 yards and 55 touchdowns
to go along with just 10 interceptions. The 38-year-old suffered another playoff hiccup in the Super Bowl, but the good news is this is a regular-season
award.
Aaron Rodgers (+650)
- Like Manning, the key for Rogers is to stay healthy. That did not happen in 2013, when Green Bay's signal-caller missed seven games due to a broken
collarbone. He still tossed 17 touchdowns compared to only six picks. Rodgers was the league's MVP in 2011 when he threw 45 TDs and just six INTs.
Tom Brady (+800)
- The Patriots' QB is 37 years old, which is positively young and sprightly compared to Manning. Okay, not really; it's pretty much the same age. Still,
both future Hall of Famers continue to get the job done. Brady, a two-time MVP (most recently in 2010) has not missed a game since 2008, and he should have
Rob Gronkowski back at his disposal in 2014.
Drew Brees (+800)
- Another veteran well into his 30s (35), Brees is as durable as they come, and there is basically no need to worry about injury. He has not missed more
than one game in a season since 2003. The Saints' lead man has never been MVP, but he is a two-time AP Offensive Player of the Year. In 2013, Brees passed
for 5,162 yards and 39 scores.
First NFL Coach to Get Fired
Jason Garrett (+400)
- Cowboys' owner Jerry Jones continues to insist that Garrett is his guy, but for how much longer? It's not like Garrett has been without chances. He has
been at the helm in Dallas for four years and has never compiled a winning record or reached the playoffs.
Doug Marrone (+500)
- What Marrone has going for him is that he has been the Bills' head coach for just one season. Time is on his side. Additionally, they were not even that
bad in 2013 (6-10). That being said, the Bills have been drafting well and spending plenty of cash, so the pressure is on.
Dennis Allen (+600)
- Oakland has not found the answer at head coach since Jon Gruden and Bill Callahan combined to win four playoff games from 1998 through 2003. Allen's
Raiders went 4-12 in each of his first two seasons. More of the same in a third try could signal the boot.
Mike Smith (+1000)
- The Falcons delivered five consecutive winning seasons to begin Smith's tenure having never previously enjoyed two straight years of the winning variety.
Their 4-12 record in 2013 was in part due to major injury problems, so Smith's leash should not be too short.
Week 1 CFB Lines
Texas A&M (+11) at South Carolina
- There is no more Johnny Football in College Station, so the Aggies will be somewhat of a new-look squad later this month in Columbia. South Carolina also
lost its most talented player in Jadeveon Clowney, but that is a loss more easily overcome.
Mississippi (-10) at Boise State
- Boise State is no stranger to marquee opening-week matchups, but it has its hands full with a Mississippi team that has been bringing in heralded
recruits left and right. This is the Broncos' first game under new head coach Bryan Harsin.
Penn State (-1.5) at Central Florida
- Manziel was not the only big-name quarterback to bolt for the NFL. Central Florida said goodbye to Blake Bortles and will turn to sophomore Justin
Holman. Penn State, meanwhile, is ushering in the James Franklin era following the departure of head coach Bill O'Brien. As such, both teams are question
marks.
Clemson (+8) at Georgia
- This is a rematch of a scintillating Week-1 showdown in 2013, when host Clemson prevailed 38-35. The Bulldogs have home-field advantage this time around.
Both teams lost their quarterbacks, but Georgia should be vastly improved on defense.
PGA Championship
Rory McIlroy (+550)
- Nobody is hotter than McIlroy right now; not even close. The world No.1 romped to a British Open victory, and he followed that up by winning the
WGC-Bridgestone Invitational on Sunday. McIlroy will be looking for his second Wannamaker Trophy this week at Valhalla.
Adam Scott (+1200)
- McIlroy may be dominating the on-course headlines right now, but don't forget about Scott. The Aussie is playing awesome golf. He has turned in five
consecutive top-10 performances on the PGA Tour, including fifth at the British Open and eighth at the Bridgestone.
Sergio Garcia (+2000)
- Garcia once said he was not good enough to win a major. Well, to say he is good enough now would be a gross understatement. Playing the most consistent
golf of his career, the Spaniard has three straight runner-up finishes, including at the British Open and the Bridgestone.
Phil Mickelson (+2000)
- Mickelson is not playing as well as the three aforementioned favorites, but he is a five-time major champion and can never be discounted. The
42-year-old, who won the 2005 PGA Championship, registered in 23rd at the British Open and in 15th at the Bridgestone.
