Weekly Q&A with Doc's Sports Expert Handicapper Vegas Sports Informer
by Doc's Sports - 4/30/2013
Doc’s Sports Service continues to be the premier selection company in the sports betting industry by providing our loyal customers with proven winners in a number of sports for well over 40 years. We have been able to stay on top for so long through the use of a Unit Betting System that adds a set value to all our picks. The other reason for our unparalleled success is an ongoing relationship with some of the best handicappers in the sports gaming business. One of our top performers for close to five years now has been the Vegas Sports Informer. He has risen to the top of the ranks through the ability to combine his handicapping skills in breaking down matchups with the competitive edge that comes from spending the last 15 years behind the counter of one of the biggest sportsbooks in Las Vegas. The Informer then uses this unique insider’s edge to make all of his selections. The results speak for themselves with a consistent winning record in a wide variety of sporting events.
Doc’s Sports came up with the idea of tapping into this insider’s edge through an ongoing series of discussions with The Informer that give our readers a first-hand, behind-the-scenes glimpse at what is really going in the Las Vegas books. These weekly interviews have been able to provide valuable insight into some of the hottest trending topics in the sports gaming industry today. The following is this week’s interview.
Doc’s Sports: We are over halfway through the opening round of the NBA Playoffs, so who has gotten the better of it so far; the betting public or the Las Vegas books?
VSI: If I had to sum things up so far I would say it has been a wash for both sides. The books have won big on a couple of teams such as the Bulls and the Warriors with the betting public going pretty heavy against them, but they have also gotten beaten up on teams like Miami and New York. The action traditionally builds as the playoffs wear on, so things should start to get much more interesting as we move into the second round.
Doc’s Sports: There is a big fight in town this Saturday night between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Robert Guerrero. Last week, the early money line had Mayweather as an -800 favorite, but what are the current lines and who do you like in this fight?
VSI: The money line on Mayweather has come down a bit to -750, and Guerrero remains a +500 underdog, but things should continue to tighten up the closer we get to Saturday night. There has been quite a bit of early action on the “won’t go” 10 full rounds at +250, which is the way I would lean. Guerrero is one of those fighters that only gets better as the rounds progress, so I fully expect Mayweather to try and take him out around the seventh or eighth round in this bout.
Doc’s Sports: Another huge sporting event takes place this Saturday with the running of the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs. Verrazano and Orb appear to be the early favorites, but do you have any other horses that you really like in this race?
VSI: The two tell-tale signs for me in this race is starting gate draw and the condition of the track at race time. If I had to pick a winner right now I would go with Revolutionary, but with possible showers in the forecast for Saturday, I will be in a wait-and-see mode until then as a sloppy track in a huge 20-horse field changes everything.
Doc’s Sports: The NHL playoffs begin on Tuesday night and Bovada’s odds for a Chicago versus Pittsburgh matchup in the Stanley Cup Finals are listed at 11/2 with the Penguins a slight 13/4 favorite to win it all. Is this how you see things panning out?
VSI: While this may not be the best handicapping tool in my bag, the simple fact that ESPN’s Barry Melrose is going with these two teams would make me think twice about betting on this being the actual matchup in the Stanley Cup Finals. I think either Anaheim or Vancouver is more than capable of coming out of the West, and my team to watch in the East is Montreal.
Doc’s Sports: The 2013 NFL Draft had its share of surprise picks over the course of seven rounds in three days. Which of the 32 NFL teams did the best job with its picks, and which one did the worst?
VSI: I really do not believe in making any kind of hard-and-fast judgments right after the draft, but a couple of teams that I think really helped themselves were New England and St. Louis. The two that left me scratching my head were the New York Jets and Pittsburgh, as neither team did a good job of addressing their most pressing needs with the picks they made.
