This Week in Sports Betting, A-Z
by Ricky Dimon - 10/31/2013
A. Arkansas-Auburn. When you’re 3-5 overall, 0-4 in conference, and coming off a 52-0 loss (albeit to Alabama), you need a little something to spice up your life. Arkansas got it this week in the form of alleged incomplete video from Saturday’s opponent, Auburn. Head coach Bret Bielema says the Tigers’ copy did not paint an accurate picture of their plays, and he is not happy about it. The Razorbacks are +8 home underdogs on Saturday at 5Dimes Sportsbook.
B. Brandon Meriweather. If you can’t go high, go low. That’s the philosophy of the Redskins’ safety after being suspended one game for targeting the heads of Bears’ receivers. Meriweather, whose ensuing war of words with Brandon Marshall has reached epic proportions, may be confused about rules. You can go high, you just can’t do it in the ridiculously absurd fashion in which he does it. Washington is a +1 home underdog vs. San Diego on Sunday, according to Bovada Sportsbook.
C. “Catching Fire”. The second “Hunger Games” movie trailer debuted during Game 4 of the World Series on Sunday. Katniss Everdeen hits theaters again on Nov. 22.
D. David Ortiz. Speaking of catching fire, Ortiz did just that throughout the World Series, which Boston clinched with a Game 6 win on Wednesday. Big Papi hit .688 (11 for 16) during the Fall Classic, with two home runs and six RBI. By comparison, the rest of the Red Sox hit a combined .169. Boston is +1200 at Sportsbook to win it all again in 2014.
E. El Clasico. Barcelona remained atop the La Liga table with a 2-1 victory over Real Madrid last Saturday at Camp Nou. Neymar, the highly-touted 21-year-old from Brazil, notched a goal in his Barcelona debut. BetOnline Sportsbook has host Brazil as a +325 favorite to win next year’s World Cup.
F. Jimbo Fisher. If Florida State had stayed ahead of Oregon at No. 2 in the BCS standings, there would not have been anything fishy about it. The team’s head coach has a vote in the USA Today Coaches Poll, but he did not use it to put his undefeated and on-fire Seminoles at the top of the charts. Alabama (56) and Oregon (6) shared the 62 first-place votes, and they are also 1-2 in the BCS. Per Carbon Sports, FSU is a -22 home favorite this Saturday against Miami.
G. Geno Smith. So far in his NFL career there appears to be two different Geno Smiths. One threw three touchdowns and no picks in a Jets’ win at Atlanta and also passed for 233 yards with a touchdown and just one interception (great by his standards) in an upset of New England. The rookie out of West Virginia, though, now has three games featuring no TDs and multiple INTs. Smith was picked off twice last weekend in New York’s humiliating 49-9 loss at Cincinnati. The Jets are +6 home underdogs this week vs. New Orleans, according to BookMaker.
H. Halloween costume. Do a quick Google image search for “Tom Brady Halloween” if you want to see what the New England signal-caller dressed up as this year. The good news is that Gisele is pictured. The bad news is that her costume is not particularly revealing.
I. Allen Iverson. If you thought The Answer retired from the NBA about a decade ago, you thought wrong. He officially announced his retirement on Wednesday, just before the Sixers went out and actually beat Miami. Speaking of the Heat, LeBron James added to his recent favorite-player praise of Iverson by saying that A.I. is the best pound-for-pound player in the history of the league.
J. Johnny Manziel. “Johnny Football” may be getting smarter. Instead of getting himself into trouble by partying too much, now he’s just talking about partying too much. He said earlier this week that the three people with whom he would most like to live it up are Rob Gronkowski, Charlie Sheen, and Tiger Woods. Manziel was also invited to a pool party by a Vanderbilt cheerleader via Twitter after the Texas A&M signal-caller had finished destroying her team. No word if he attended, but you can be sure there would have been pics if he did. Sportsbook.ag has Manziel at +1000 to win another Heisman Trophy this season.
K. Patrick Kaleta. Kaleta is quickly becoming one of the most notorious enforcers in the NHL, and he’s not even a defenseman. Buffalo’s forward was suspended five games last year, costing him $72,000 in salary, for a hit on the Rangers’ Brad Richards. Kaleta has now been slammed with a 10-game ban for a blow to the head of Columbus’ Jack Jackson earlier this month. This one will cost him $152,439. The Sabres are +10000 to win the Eastern Conference at Bovada Sportsbook.
L. Lamp-lighter. San Jose Sharks’ 19-year-old phenom Tomas Hertl scored four goals in a game earlier this month in a 9-2 rout of the Rangers. If you haven’t seen his fourth and final goal, of the between-the-legs variety, find it on YouTube immediately. The only reason why it wasn’t No. 1 on SportsCenter’s plays of month (it was No. 3) is because this is hockey we’re talking about.
M. Megatron. Calvin Johnson amassed the second-most receiving yards in a game in NFL history with 329 in Detroit’s win over Dallas on Sunday. If you guessed the all-time single-game leader is Flipper Anderson, you would be correct. The Lions are +1600 at GT Bets to win the NFC Championship.
N. Washington Nationals. The Nationals hired former Giants, Indians, and Diamondbacks slugger Matt Williams as their new manager earlier this week. Williams had been coaching with Arizona for the past four seasons. Washington is +1000 to win the 2014 World Series, according to Bovada Sportsbook.
O. Ole Miss. Arguably the craziest character in college basketball, Marshall Henderson, has been suspended for three games this season by Mississippi. After several run-ins with police, Henderson was initially banned indefinitely on July 10. It was announced on Tuesday that the star guard will miss Ole Miss’ season-opener vs. Troy on Nov. 8 and the first two SEC contests in January.
P. Free pizza. Detroit Lions’ receiver Nate Burleson, who suffered a broken arm last month after wrecking his car while trying to adjust a box of pizza in the front seat, has received free pizza for a year from DiGiorno. You can’t make this stuff up, folks. A thrilled Burleson confirmed the happy news via Twitter on Sunday.
Q. That’s my quarterback. After going ballistic on the sidelines at coaches and players (Tony Romo included) in Dallas’ loss to Detroit, Dez Bryan expressed love and respect for his quarterback. It wasn’t quite a Terrell Owens moment; in fact, it wasn’t even close to that. But by Bryan’s standards, it was a major role reversal. Carbon Sports has Dallas as a -10 home favorite over Minnesota on Sunday.
R. Rainbow Warrior. Jeff Gordon snuck into the Sprint Cup Chase as a 13th competitor on a controversial ruling, and he is making the most of his opportunity. Gordon ended a 32-race drought by triumphing last weekend at Martinsville. He is up to third in the standings, 27 points back of co-leaders Jimmie Johnson and Matt Kenseth. Johnson is a -130 favorite at TopBet to win the title.
S. St. Louis blues. Monday in St. Louis echoed Oct. 7 in Atlanta, when the Falcons lost at home to the Jets on a last-second field goal and the Braves were eliminated from the playoffs after blowing a late lead in Los Angeles. This time under the arch, the Cardinals lost Game 5 of the Fall Classic 3-1, and the Rams’ upset bid against the Seahawks ended on Seattle’s one-yard line after the underdogs had first-and-goal at the six.
T. Fernando Torres. No, that’s not a misprint; neither Manchester City nor Manchester United is in the top six of the Premier League standings through nine games. Torres is part of the reason, because his Chelsea club edged seventh-place City 2-1 on Sunday. The game-winner came off Torres’ foot in the 90th minute. Sportsbook.ag has Chelsea as a +187 favorite to win the Premier League.
U. UCLA. It does not take a genius to figure out what has happened to the Bruins. As they say, look at the schedule! UCLA started the season 5-0 by beating nobody better than Nebraska before running into Stanford and Oregon. Jim Mora’s squad fell to the Cardinal 24-10 and got blown out by the Ducks (after a competitive first half), 42-14.
V. Velvet Underground. Lou Reed, the lead singer of Velvet Underground before embarking on a successful solo career, died on Sunday at age 71. Reed’s hits included “Walk on the Wild Side” from 1973.
W. Tiger Woods. Tiger was sick, and it was only an 18-hole exhibition, but a win is a win for Rory McIlroy these days. McIlroy defeated the world No. 1 by one shot, 6-under to 5-under, earlier this week in China for a second straight year. They combined to play the last seven holes in 10-under to make for a furious finish. Tiger is a +500 favorite at Bovada Sportsbook to win the Masters next spring.
X. Xander Bogaerts. Bogaerts’ .238 World Series batting average does not jump off the page, but it was third best on the Red Sox, and his five hits were tied for third on the team with Dustin Pedroia.
Y. Young Jeezy. It may be time for Young Jeezy to run like hell, because the Hells Angels Motorcycle Club is after him. The club is suing the rapper over images on his 8732 apparel, which features a logo closely resembling the Hells Angels’ Death Head. In the suit, HAMC is seeking an unspecified amount in damages and requesting the sales of all 8732 clothing with the logo in question be halted.
Z. Le Zlatan. Zlatan Ibrahimovic had a big night last week, scoring four goals in a 5-0 Champions League win for Paris Saint-Germain over Anderlecht. Now, Parisian fans can have a big night at Doddy's Café by ordering “Le Zlatan,” a behemoth of a burger named for the Swedish striker. Tale of the tape: it weighs in at more than one kilogram, with 250 grams of bread and 300 grams of cheese. PSG is +1400 at TopBet to win the Champions League title.
