Thank God it's Friday: Edmonton Leaking Oil
by Ricky Dimon - 11/1/2013
The Edmonton Oilers are giving up goals in bunches and losing games at an equally rapid pace. Of course, they are no more than an afterthought in the NHL. Much more significant developments took place on the field this week. St. Louis swung and missed on its chance for another World Series title, while Cincinnati’s Halloween game at Miami was positively nightmarish.

St. Louis Cardinals. The Cardinals did well to reach a second World Series in three years, but they did not come away with their second title in that span. While Boston’s pitching may have been stellar, St. Louis simply did not swing the bat. The Cards hit .224 during the Fall Classic after hitting .209 in the division series against Pittsburgh and .211 in the NLCS against the Dodgers (compared to .269 throughout the regular season). If the Cardinals are looking for any consolation after Wednesday’s season-ending loss, they won’t find it in this: Boston had home-field advantage—and thus was playing Game 6 at Fenway Park—because the American League won a stupid All-Star Game. St. Louis is +1000 to win the 2014 World Series; the Dodgers are +500 favorites.
Florida State. It is, of course, a great time to be a Florida State Seminole right now. The football team is undefeated and being led by a freshman (Jameis Winston) who is a -110 co-favorite along with Marcus Mariota to win the Heisman Trophy. Still, the ‘Noles are on tenuous ground in the BCS with the four-team tournament still one year away. They fell to No. 3 in the rankings behind Oregon despite clobbering N.C. State last week, and neither Alabama nor the Ducks is showing any signs of losing a game anytime soon. There’s a chance FSU could get left out in the cold from the championship and find itself playing some chump like Northern Illinois in the Orange Bowl. The Seminoles are -21.5 favorites over Miami (FL) on Saturday and +210 to win the BCS National Championship.
Florida. On the hardwood, Florida’s preseason preparation has been rocky at best. The team, which is ranked No. 10 in the AP Poll, had already suspended senior point guard Scottie Wilbekin, and now he is being joined on the sideline by Dorian Finney-Smith and Damontre Harris. Wilbekin is sitting out 3-5 games, while Finney-Smith and Harris are reportedly set to miss the first two of the season. Wilbekin averaged 9.1 points per game and 5.0 assists last season, during which he started 29 games at the floor-general spot. Finney-Smith and Harris are transfers, both expected to be major contributors, now eligible after sitting out a year. The Gators visit Wisconsin on Nov. 12 for their second contest of the season. They are +1800 to win the National Championship.
Cincinnati Bengals. It’s been a productive year for the Bengals, and it still is a good one at the moment, but Thursday night in Miami was a disaster. They became the third team in NFL history to lose a game on an overtime safety. They also lost also lost Geno Atkins, arguably the best defensive tackle in the league, for the season to a torn ACL. On the bright side, Cincinnati is still 6-3 and atop of the AFC North ahead of struggling foes Baltimore, Cleveland, and Pittsburgh. Marvin Lewis’ squad is -600 to win the division.
Edmonton Oilers. Edmonton has gone seven straight years without making the playoffs, a stretch dating back to a Game 7 loss to Carolina in the 2006 Stanley Cup Finals. The streak of futility is looking like it will hit eight in the near future. The Oilers are 3-9-2 through 14 games of this season, good for eight points that have them third to last in the entire NHL. They are dead last in the league with 54 goals against, at least 10 more than every other team. Edmonton has lost four in a row after a rare two-game winning streak. It is +5000 to win the Pacific Division.
Manchester City. Normally when Man City is ahead of Man United in the Premier League standings, it means a first-place ranking is by its name. Not so right now, to say the least. In fact, neither Manchester club is in the top six on the league table. Through nine games, City is seventh with 16 points, and United is eighth with 14. City had a chance to close the gap on league-leading Chelsea last weekend, but Chelsea notched a game-winning goal in the 90th minute to prevail, 2-1. Chelsea is a +187 favorite to win the Premier League title, while Man City is the second choice at +240.
Jimmie Johnson. The five-time Sprint Cup champion is traditionally a force at Martinsville, one of the best tracks throughout his career. If Johnson had designs of extending his four-point lead in the Chase standings last Sunday, he instead went backwards. JJ finished a decent fifth, but Matt Kenseth came in second behind Jeff Gordon and Kenseth—previously in second place in the standings—led 202 laps. The result is a tie at the top between Johnson and Kenseth, with Kenseth holding a tiebreaker due to more races won in 2013. Three races remain. Johnson is a -130 favorite to win the title; Kenseth is +125.
