Super Bowl Betting Predictions: 2013 Cross-Sport Props and Picks
by Alan Matthews - 2/1/2013
Hi, my name is Alan Matthews and I'm a Super Bowl cross-sport propaholic. I am indeed totally addicted to these types of props, and I wish sites would have them weekly on other events. Jimmie Johnson laps led at Daytona against the total points scored by LeBron James. Knockdowns in a Manny Pacquiao fight against goals for Sidney Crosby against the Canadiens. You get the drill. The combinations are endless. But I also know it takes plenty of research and the like, so it's not going to happen.

This Week in NFL Betting by the Numbers: San Francisco 49ers
by Ricky Dimon - 2/1/2013
Randy Moss used Super Bowl media day to announce to the world that he is the best receiver in the history of the NFL. Seriously? Okay, Moss is (or at least was) really good. But let's not get carried away now. In 14 regular seasons he has 982 receptions for 15,292 yards and 156 touchdowns. Jerry Rice, for example, hauled in 1,549 passes for 22,895 yards and 197 touchdowns in 20 regular seasons. Rice was named to the Pro Bowl 13 times, one away from doubling Moss' total.

2013 Super Bowl: Alternate Point Spreads and Totals
by Nicholas Tolomeo - 1/31/2013
There is only one football game left this season, and, as unfortunate as that is for a football fan, a gambler or a gambling football fan, thanks to alternate Super Bowl lines there are tons of ways to bet this one last game without delving into any ludicrous prop bets.

2013 Super Bowl Teasers Betting: Picks and Predictions
by George Monroy - 1/30/2013
Basic strategy teasers are universally considered to be the best teaser bets available to gamblers, and, while they definitely have the best value on the board, there is nothing wrong with placing a well timed non-basic strategy teaser on a football game. Generally, the next best teaser bet is a two-team six-point teaser-as anything else starts heading into deep negative expected value territory.

2013 Super Bowl Props Predictions: Ray Rice Odds and Picks
by Alan Matthews - 1/29/2013
If I were to ask you to give me an impartial (i.e. not overvaluing a player on your favorite team or someone on your keeper fantasy roster) Top 5 list of the best all-around backs in the NFL off the top of your head, who would it include? Certainly Minnesota's Adrian Peterson and Houston's Arian Foster have to be locks on every list. Probably also Seattle's Marshawn Lynch, Kansas City's Jamaal Charles and Tennessee's Chris Johnson. Some might have an argument for the likes of San Francisco's Frank Gore, Chicago's Matt Forte, Philadelphia's LeSean McCoy and Dallas' DeMarco Murray. Rookies like Tampa Bay's Doug Martin and Washington's Alfred Morris have to prove it over a few more years.

2013 Super Bowl Props to Avoid
by Aaron Smith - 1/29/2013
No event can match the popularity of the Super Bowl. Not surprisingly, the Super Bowl is also the most popular sporting event of the year for bettors to wager on. As the popularity of the Super Bowl has grown, the books have found that one of the best ways to attract even more wagering action on Super Bowl Sunday is to release a vast array of Super Bowl prop bets. NFL prop bets have become fairly popular throughout the season, but they take on a whole new level of popularity at the Super Bowl.

2013 Super Bowl Handicapping: Don't Buy Into Media Hype
by Trevor Whenham - 1/28/2013
The amount of media coverage of the Super Bowl grows each year. With that comes more and more stories that we have to listen to and decide whether they matter or not. There are a lot of stories that clearly mean little, so we can discard them quickly. There are other stories, though, that you hear often enough that you really start to wonder whether they could be a big difference in the game. Here are four storylines that are getting a lot of attention heading into this year's game that just aren't as important as they seem when it comes to picking a winner:

2013 Super Bowl Betting: Mistakes to Avoid
by Trevor Whenham - 1/28/2013
When you are handicapping the Super Bowl, the single most important thing to do is to avoid making mistakes. That's true of every football game, but it's particularly crucial in this game. The extra week leading up to the game gives bettors too much time to over-think and get misled, and the media coverage of this game is many times more than any other game. That means that there are many false paths you can wander down if you aren't careful. Here are five mistakes to avoid making heading into this game:

How to Bet Super Bowl Props
by Nicholas Tolomeo - 1/26/2012
Sports proposition bets are available throughout the year, but when it comes to the Super Bowl, well, it's the 'Super Bowl' of prop betting. Sportsbooks offer literally hundreds of potential prop bets, some dealing with the game itself, some having to do with commercials, the broadcast, the coin flip, the halftime show, the color of the Gatorade poured on the winning coach…well you get the point.

Super Bowl First Player to Score Props Predictions 2013
by Robert Ferringo - 1/25/2013
Baltimore will take on San Francisco in Super Bowl XLVII at 6:30 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 3, at the Superdome in New Orleans. One of the more interesting and unpredictable proposition wagers that bettors will make on the Super Bowl is to gauge the odds on the first player to score a touchdown in the Super Bowl.

2013 Super Bowl Handicapping
by Trevor Whenham - 1/25/2013
The Super Bowl is, finally, almost here. It has felt like a particularly long season this year - the replacement refs seemed like they were a lifetime ago. It has been a good one, though, and we are about to cap it off with what has the potential to be a very good Super Bowl.

2013 Super Bowl Coaches: Handicapping the Harbaugh Brothers
by Trevor Whenham - 1/25/2013
I don't know if you have heard, but the two coaches in the Super Bowl this year are brothers. I'm kidding, of course. Unless you have been living under a rock, you have not only heard of their shared parentage, but you've seen pictures of them as kids, heard countless stories about their families, and so much else. In other words, you are probably as sick of the Harbaugh family as I am.

2013 Super Bowl Props Picks: Joe Flacco Odds
by Alan Matthews - 1/25/2013
Remember when Joe Flacco claimed he was one of the NFL's elite quarterbacks along the likes of the Tom Bradys, Peyton Mannings and Aaron Rodgers of the world? Well, Flacco was right - but only when it comes to the playoffs. And I can't believe I am typing this, but with a big performance against San Francisco in Super Bowl XLVII Flacco could supplant Joe Montana for arguably the greatest postseason for a quarterback in NFL history.

Super Bowl Halftime Betting Advice and Strategy
by Trevor Whenham - 1/25/2013
In my mind the best part of the Super Bowl is probably, if I'm being honest, the food and drink on the big day. The second best part, though, is halftime betting. The betting on the Super Bowl is so heavy, and the scrutiny of the game is so intense, that value can be tough to find. Most times, the best way to find attractive value in the game is to wait until halftime. Halftime betting - betting on the lines and totals posted at halftime for the second half only - can be a great source for value.

Super Bowl Props Predictions: Colin Kaepernick
by Alan Matthews - 1/24/2013
No rookie quarterback has ever led his team to a Super Bowl, much less win one. But in just about every aspect, San Francisco second-year player Colin Kaepernick is a rookie. The former Nevada dual-threat star, who set numerous NCAA records with the Wolf Pack, was considered somewhat of a reach when the 49ers took him in the second round of the 2011 draft.

Super Bowl MVP Odds and Predictions 2013
by Robert Ferringo - 1/24/2013
One of the most popular proposition wagers for the Super Bowl each year is which player will win the Super Bowl MVP. The Super Bowl MVP odds are always some of the first released, second only to the spread and total on the game itself, and is generally one of the more interesting subplots to the Super Bowl.

by Trevor Whenham - 1/24/2013
Prop bets are the most fun part of Super Bowl betting. There are so many offered, and some of them are so creative, that it adds a whole new element of challenge and excitement to betting on the game. If you aren't careful, though, props are also a very effective way to throw away a lot of money in a hurry.

Betting the Super Bowl Over and Under
by Dave Schwab - 1/23/2013
On Sunday, Feb.3, at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans, the AFC Champion Baltimore Ravens will battle it out with the NFC's top team, the San Francisco 49ers, in Super Bowl XLVII. The early money in this game has been pouring in on the Ravens as 3.5-point underdogs, but the play of the game just so happens to be on the total line, which BetOnline currently has set at 47.

Betting on the Super Bowl Coin Toss
by Alan Matthews - 1/22/2013
Yes, betting on the Super Bowl coin toss is one of the most popular football props of the entire season - some sites release the following season's SB coin toss props literally the day after the game. After all, it's not like the odds exactly are going to change. I'd be interested to find out if people actually bet on coin toss futures odds. There are self-help groups out there if you do!

2013 Super Bowl Betting Money Management
by Trevor Whenham - 1/22/2013
Picking winners in the Super Bowl - either against the spread or in the props - is tough enough. What really makes betting to win on the Super Bowl tough, though, is managing your money effectively. There are so many betting options, so much hype and excitement, and so much buildup centered around just one game that it can be easy to see your bankroll disappear in a ball of flames if you aren't careful. Successful Super Bowl betting money management really comes down to just three things:

Common Super Bowl Betting Mistakes
by Trevor Whenham - 1/22/2013
There will be about 5,000 accredited media members in New Orleans, and many times more people sitting at home sharing their opinions. Those people need things to talk about, and there just aren't a whole lot of meaningful angles - it's just one game, after all. That means that any storyline that is important - or that sounds important - will get beaten into submission and will be made to sound like much more than it really is.

2013 Free Super Bowl Picks
by Alan Matthews - 1/21/2013
In what is absolutely no surprise, no top-seeded team will hoist the Lombardy Trophy one week from Sunday in Super Bowl XLVII at the Superdome in New Orleans. Instead, we have the NFC's second-seeded San Francisco 49ers against the AFC's No. 4 Baltimore Ravens in what will be referred to hourly as the "Harbaugh Bowl". Seriously, I expect some "over/under" props on Harbaugh Bowl mentions during the game as well as how many times the parents of 49ers coach Jim and Ravens coach John are shown during the CBS game. Get ready for a Harbaugh overload in the next two weeks. At least it will shove Manti Te'o and his imaginary girlfriend into the background.

2013 Super Bowl Predictions
by Trevor Whenham - 1/21/2013
It's a Harbaugh world, and the rest of us just get to live in it. Last year John and Jim became the first brothers ever to coach against each other in the NFL. So, needless to say, this is the first Super Bowl matchup between brothers. It also promises to be the most overplayed storyline in Super Bowl history. These teams just advanced to the big game yesterday, and I have already heard about the brothers angle about 50 times.

2013 Free Super Bowl Picks
by Alan Matthews - 1/16/2013
Prior to last weekend's divisional round of the NFL playoffs, I liked a San Francisco 49ers-New England Patriots Super Bowl matchup at 13/2. And nothing that happened has changed my mind. The 49ers beat Green Bay by two touchdowns in a record-setting day by Niners QB Colin Kaepernick ironically, former San Francisco starting QB Alex Smith had arguably the best game of his career in last year's divisional round win over New Orleans. And the Patriots, other than an early 3-0 deficit, had little trouble in spanking the Houston Texans for the second time this season. Now a Patriots-49ers Super Bowl matchup is the 5/6 favorite at Bovada, so hopefully you jumped on the 13/2 number when you had the chance.

2013 Super Bowl Contenders
by Robert Ferringo - 1/15/2013
To hedge, or not to hedge - that is the question. I am a big fan of futures betting as a tool for sports investing. However, my least favorite wager is any type of championship future. I very, very rarely play on odds to win the Super Bowl, or odds to win the World Series, or odds to win the NCAA Tournament or BCS Championship. I will wager on things like conference or divisional titles. But to me the odds of hitting a winning Super Bowl futures bet back in August are never juicy enough to get any green from me.

Potential Super Bowl Matchups: Odds and Analysis
by Trevor Whenham - 1/15/2013
We don't yet know which two teams will be playing in the Super Bowl, but at this point there are only four possibilities. It seems like a good idea to rank each of those four possibilities in terms of betting attractiveness (odds of each matchup occurring are from Bovada):

And then there were four. The NFL followed up a lousy wild card weekend with a truly epic divisional playoff weekend. Each game was fascinating in its own way, and each winner is worthy of moving on. As we look to make our 2013 Super Bowl predictions for this week, we do it with anticipation both of the good games on tap for next weekend, and for what has the potential to be a truly outstanding Super Bowl.
