MLB Playoff Odds: Which Teams Will Make the Cut?
by George Monroy - 7/24/2013
Now that the all-star break is over its time for MLB teams to get straight to the business of making the postseason. With roughly 60 games left in the regular season, there are still eight to 10 teams with a solid shot at making the playoffs, even though no one has officially been mathematically eliminated from postseason—at least not yet. Bovada has released a set of prop lines showing the odds for more than a third of the teams in the league, so let’s take our minds off of the recent performance-enhancing drugs suspensions and remember why we love baseball in the first place—because it’s a great sport to bet on. Here is a quick look at the 2013 postseason odds for 12 teams.
2013 Playoff Odds
Arizona Diamondbacks: “Yes”: Even; “No”: -140
Division: -.5 games behind
Wild card: -4.5
The Diamondbacks are right in the mix of things, and you can never really trust the Dodgers. There is definite value in wager on a yes.
Baltimore Orioles: Yes: +250; No: -400
Division: -3.5
Wild card: 0 (leading wild card)
The Orioles have a game and a half lead for the second wild-card spot and are only three games back in their division. There is value on a yes.
Cincinnati Reds: Yes: -300; No: +200
Division: -5
Wild card: 0 (leading wild card)
The Reds are almost a shoe-in to make the playoffs, but with 60 games left anything can happen. The team is only half a game back of the division lead and has a four and a half game lead for the second wild-card spot.
Cleveland Indians: Yes: +255; No: -350
Division: -3.5
Wild card: -4.5
There are currently three teams ahead of the Indians for the final wild-card spot, and they trail the Tigers by almost four games. The no is the best route to go.
Detroit Tigers: Yes: -1200; No: +600
Division: +3.5 games ahead
Wild card: 0 (leading division)
The Tigers are probably going to make the playoffs, but isn’t there some value on the no at +600? A key injury or a whole-team meltdown can happen, couldn’t it?
Los Angeles Angels: Yes: +700; No: -1400
Division: -11
Wild card: 9.5
The Angels have been horrible this season, and there is really no reason to expect things to turn around. Wagering on the no at -1400 is just too much to bet, but there is also no value whatsoever on the yes at +700. Just skip this one all together.
Los Angeles Dodgers: Yes: -150; No: +110
Division: +.5
Wild card: 0 (leading division)
The Dodgers have been playing great over the last month, but would anyone really be surprised if they had a complete meltdown and missed the playoffs? They are probably going to make the postseason, but Los Angeles has not been a team that you can trust over the last 20 years.
New York Yankees: Yes: +300; No: -500
Division: -7
Wild card: -3.5
New York’s best route into the postseason is through the wild card, where they are only 3.5 games behind. The team is struggling to produce runs. However, there is some value on a yes.
Oakland Athletics: Yes: -600; No: +500
Division: +3
Wild card: 0 (leading division)
The team is leading their division by only three games, so there is value on the no, and, besides, the yes is too risky for a -600 price with around 60 games left in the season.
Philadelphia Phillies: Yes: +600; No: -1200
Division: -7
Wild card: -7.5
The Phillies have played close to .500 baseball all season, and expecting them to make the playoffs is just too much to ask. If price is not an issue, take the no.
San Francisco Giants: Yes: +600; No: -1000
Division: -6.5
Wild card: -10.5
The Giants’ best route into the playoffs would be to win the division, where they currently trail the Dodgers, Diamondbacks and Rockies.
Washington Nationals: Yes: +200; No: -300
Division: -8
Wild card: -8.5
The Nationals were so overhyped last year and bought into it by shutting down their ace pitcher for the playoffs. Being a contender every year is not a given. The no has the most value in this situation.
