A Holiday Wish List: Taking a Look at Trends Bettors want to Continue
by George Monroy - 12/24/2013
The holiday season may be the only season that bettors wish was a bit shorter. The long lines, the crazy parking, and a wife that makes you miss Sunday night football to go Christmas shopping can make a two month season feel like a 162-game Major League Baseball marathon. Luckily for all the bettors out there, the holiday season is nearing its end, and for everyone that is about to receive a bunch of gifts that are two sizes too big or out-of-style neck ties, here is a quick list of betting trends that most gamblers would love to see continue into the New Year.
Buffalo Sabres historically bad run
NHL bettors outside of Buffalo would love for the Sabres to continue their horrendous start to the season—hey, making a profit any way you can is the most important thing, right? Prior to Buffalo getting on a little hot streak and winning three of its last four games before the holiday break, the team was on pace to earn fewer than 40 points this season and challenge for a Top 10 spot on the ‘worst teams of all-time’ list. However, the Sabres got a few much-needed victories and are on pace to earn 50 points in the standings, which would still be the worst mark of the 2000s. Betting against the Sabres at home, particularly on moneylines in the -150 range, has been a solid bet this season.
The Phoenix Suns covering 76 percent of their games
Casual NBA fans and bettors probably know all about the Portland Trail Blazers surprise start to the season, but the team bettors should keep an eye on is the Phoenix Suns. The Suns started the first quarter of the year with a ridiculous 20-6-1 ATS record and are covering 76.9 percent of their games. Phoenix was not expected to be a playoff contender in any way before the season started, but the team is sitting on a solid 17-10 straight up record and the fifth seed in the West. The Suns will have the luxury of playing under-the-radar for most of the season, and bettors may want to look into this trend once the season revs up again in January.
Kentucky Wildcats not covering spreads
Kentucky was probably the most-hyped team entering the college basketball season in recent memory. There were even whispers before the season started that the Wildcats could run the table and go undefeated this year. That talk was obviously unfounded as Kentucky has already lost three games and fallen from its early No. 1 ranking. However, the team is still very good and one of the favorites to win next year’s national title. However, Kentucky is not a very good ATS team. The squad has a 4-5-1 ATS mark through its first 12 games of action and has to face double-digit spreads nearly every game. Last season, coach John Calipari’s squad was a below-.500 ATS team, and by the looks of things, Kentucky might struggle to break that mark this season.
