Clemson at Duke Picks and College Basketball Odds
by Dave Schwab - 1/7/2013
The Clemson Tigers will face their toughest test of the season this Tuesday night when they go on the road to square off against the No.1 Duke Blue Devils in Durham. All the action from Cameron Indoor Stadium is set to get underway at 7 p.m. (ET), and the game will be broadcast nationally on ESPNU.
The Tigers opened play in the ACC this past Saturday with a disappointing 71-66 loss to Florida State as 3.5-point home favorites. The loss dropped them to 8-5 straight up on the season, but they are still a healthy 6-3 against the spread. The total has gone “over” in three of their past five games with a posted line.
Duke held onto the top spot in the polls with a convincing 80-62 victory over Wake Forest in its conference opener this past Saturday. It could not cover as a 22.5-point home favorite against the Demon Deacons and is now 8-6 ATS verse a perfect 14-0 SU record. The total has stayed “under” in four of its last five games.
Clemson vs. Duke Betting Storylines
Clemson comes into this matchup averaging 66.6 points a game while shooting 45.4 percent from the field. It has also had a hard time controlling the boards at times this season with 34.3 rebounds a game. Before Saturday’s loss to the Seminoles, it had not given up more than 70 points in its last six games.
If the Tigers are going to have any shot at keeping this game close they will need a huge night from Devin Booker and KJ McDaniels. Each is averaging over 11 points a game, with Booker leading the team in rebounds with 7.5 a game. Milton Jennings is also scoring in double-figures with 10.1 points and averaging 5.2 rebounds a game. One of the biggest weaknesses of this team that could have a major impact on the outcome of this game is a 32.7 shooting percentage from three-point range.
The Blue Devils are posting 80.1 points a game behind five players scoring in double figures. Mason Plumlee has led the way with 18.4 points a game while also leading the team in rebounds with 11.3. Seth Curry is averaging 16.6 points a game and shooting 48.6 percent from the floor and 40.8 percent from three-point range. Quinn Cook is averaging a team-high 6.2 assists while chipping in another 10.3 points a game.
While the star power on this team is high, the depth of Duke’s bench is what makes it a legitimate national title contender. Even if one of their top shooters has an off night, there are plenty of other players that can step up to fill the void. It is this depth that has worn past opponents down to account for 10 double-digit wins this season.
Clemson vs. Duke College Basketball Betting Odds and Trends
Duke has been opened by BetOnline as a 19.5-point home favorite with a total line still OFF the board.
The Tigers are 8-3 ATS in their last 11 road games but 0-5 ATS in their last five games against the ACC. The total has gone over in eight of their last 11 games following a SU loss.
The Blue Devils are 0-6 ATS in their last six conference games and 6-17 ATS in their last 23 games at home. The total has stayed under in nine of their last 13 home games.
Head-to-head, Duke is 4-0 SU and 3-1 ATS in the last four meetings and the total has stayed under in six of the last eight meetings in Durham.
Clemson vs. Duke Picks and Betting Predictions
Clemson is definitely in over its heads in this matchup, especially playing this game on the road. There is no way it gets out of Cameron with a win, but Duke’s inability to consistently cover huge spreads, especially at home, shifts the play to the Tigers and the 19.5 points for Tuesday night’s clash.
