Case of the Mondays: Bubbles Burst for Kentucky, Tennessee
by Ricky Dimon - 3/18/2013
Joe Lunardi (and a whole bunch of other people) nailed all 68 teams in the field, which really isn’t hard to do when the last two or three spots come down to three or four realistic hopefuls. So nobody could have been too surprised to learn its fate on Sunday evening. Still, that doesn’t mean there aren’t plenty of folks having a blue Monday.

SEC. Kentucky once again is the No. 1 overall seed. Oh, wait, it’s the NIT this time! These are dark days for the SEC, which got a mere three teams in the NCAA Tournament (automatic qualifier Ole Miss plus Florida and Missouri). Look no further than the top lines in the NIT bracket (not that anyone would ever look at the NIT bracket) to see just how close the conference came to doubling that total. Both Kentucky and Alabama are No. 1 seeds and Tennessee is a No. 2. Now look at the real bracket. Florida’s loss to Ole Miss clearly hurt, because the Gators are a No. 3 seed and may have to face Georgetown in the Sweet 16 and Kansas in the Elite 8. The Rebels have to play Big Ten runner-up Wisconsin right off the bat, and Missouri would have to play Louisville if the Tigers get past Colorado State. Florida, the SEC’s best hope, is +1000 to win the National Championship.
UCLA. The Bruins were in business last Friday, leading Arizona late in the game en route to a Pac-12 title matchup with Oregon. That, however, is when freshman Jordan Adams suffered a broken foot, and Adams-less UCLA lost the final one day later. Then the next day, UCLA learned it was a No. 6 seed in the South Regional, set to play all of its regional games in the state of Texas. Head coach Ben Howland said afterward that he expected a No. 5 seed at the very worst, and he was baffled that fellow conference members California and Oregon are both playing a stone’s throw from home in San Jose. The Bruins are +5000 to reach the Final 4 and +10000 to win it all.
Tobacco Road. At least all three Tobacco Road teams made the Big Dance, something that many other ACC (and SEC, for that matter) squads failed to accomplish. Still, nothing good came from the ACC Tournament for this trio, and its NCAA Tournament chances have taken a hit, accordingly. Both UNC and N.C. State are in dreaded 8-9 games, meaning they would have to face No. 1 seeds in the second round. The Heels are on a collision course with Kansas, and the Wolpack would run into Indiana. As for Duke, it not only missed a No. 1 seed but also got stuck in the toughest region (the Midwest) with potential dates against Michigan State in the Sweet 16 and top overall seed Louisville in the Elite 8. The Blue Devils are +300 to win the Midwest and +800 to win the National Championship.
Elvis Dumervil’s agent. What a debacle this is. Dumervil appeared to be returning to Denver last Friday before all hell broke loose. His agent, Marty Magid, thought he had the paperwork for a restructured contract filed to the Broncos before the 4 p.m. Eastern deadline. Instead, the team ended up releasing Dumervil because the necessary documents were not filed on time. Needless to say, that is the short story of the thing. The bottom line is Dumervil is unemployed…and so is his agent! Dumervil canned Magid immediately thereafter. Interest is already hot for the defensive end, but that may not be the case for the agent. Denver, meanwhile, is a +600 co-favorite with New England to win the Super Bowl.
Zack Greinke. Two names and two names only come to mind when a pitcher experiences elbow soreness. The first is “Tommy John,” and the second is “Dr. James Andrews.” For now, the worst is not terribly feared for Greinke, who threw a pain-free bullpen session last weekend six days after receiving a platelet-rich plasma injection in his right arm. Still, it is cause for concern for the Dodgers…especially when you are paying the guy $147 million over six years after an offseason spending spree. L.A. has two off days early in the season, so it is not projected to require a fifth starter until April 13. That only increases the chances that Greinke won’t make an appearance any time soon. The Dodgers are +450 to win the National League Pennant and +1000 to win the World Series.
Los Angeles Lakers. Despite a 3-1 record after beating Sacramento on Sunday, it was another rough week for the Lakers. Kobe Bryant sustained an ankle injury (complete with controversy, no less) in the final seconds of a loss to Atlanta, and Pau Gasol suffered a setback in his recovery from plantar fasciitis in his right foot. Kobe played 12 minutes without scoring in a Friday win over Indiana, and he did not play against the Kings (also in part because of the flu). Gasol initially planned to return on Monday against the Suns, but now he remains out indefinitely. The Lakers are -3.5 favorites for their road game at Phoenix. They are +800 to win the Western Conference and +1800 to win the NBA Championship.
Manchester City. That will just about seal the deal in the Premier League for 2013. Already struggling well behind Manchester United in the table, Manchester City lost to Everton on Saturday, 2-0. United, meanwhile, earned a 1-0 victory over Reading. With just nine games left in the season, City is still in second but a whopping 15 points behind United. No, there will be no miracle comeback this year. As for the FA Cup, however, City is in much better shape. It is a +137 favorite to win the title, ahead of United at +300 and Chelsea at +350.
