Case of the Mondays: Dodgers Down 2-0, Tigers Not Up 2-0
by Ricky Dimon - 10/14/2013
What a difference a week makes. Seven days ago, Juan Uribe of the Dodgers was bashing Atlanta out of the playoffs. Now, L.A. can’t hit a ball and is two games away from elimination. Two games from the World Series is not what the Tigers are, but they very well could be. Instead, the ALCS is alive and well.

Yasiel Puig. In the division series against the Braves, Puig went 8-for-17 with two RBI and five runs scored, and he was on base for what proved to be a series-winning blast by Uribe. The 22-year-old, however, is 0-for-10 with six strikeouts through two games of the NLCS against the Cardinals. He was left sitting alone on the bench at the end of Game 2, utterly distraught with head in hands. The Dodgers, who trail 2-0 in the series, have scored only two runs in 22 innings. L.A. (Ryu) is a +105 home underdog vs. St. Louis (Wainwright) on Monday.
Detroit Tigers. The Tigers were five outs away from going back home with a 2-0 lead over Boston in the ALCS. Instead, they forked up a grand Slam to David Ortiz in the bottom of the eighth inning. With one swing of the bat, Game 2 was tied, Torii Hunter was over the wall, and the Fenway Park bullpen cop was an instant celebrity. Detroit completed its collapse by giving up a quick run in the bottom of the ninth. The Tigers are still -125 favorites to win the series.
Matt Schaub. Schaub got the Matt Cassel treatment on Sunday as he went down with an ankle injury to a chorus of cheers by the home crowd. Houston was trailing St. Louis 31-6 at the time, and Schaub was 15-of-21 for 186 yards with no touchdowns and no interceptions. It has been a horrendous year for the quarterback, who has thrown more picks (nine) than scores (eight). Since starting the season 2-0, the Texans have lost four in a row—three of those by at least 21 points and the last by a combined 72-16. Houston is a +7 underdog at undefeated Kansas City in Week 7.
New Orleans Saints. Sunday in Boston was the opposite of last Monday in Atlanta. For those who need a refresher, the Falcons lost at home to the Jets on a last-second field goal before the Braves were knocked out of the playoffs after blowing an eighth-inning lead over the Dodgers. Prior to the Red Sox comeback in Game 2, the Patriots won in miracle fashion against the Saints—who have to be kicking themselves. New Orleans had a chance to run out the clock with New England down to its last timeout but failed to make a first down. Its defense, which had held Tom Brady in check the entire way, promptly folded on a last-minute Patriots drive that resulted in a game-winning, 17-yard touchdown pass from Brady to Kenbrell Thompkins with five seconds remaining. The Saints are +240 favorites to win the NFC Championship and +550 to win the Super Bowl.
Undefeated teams. Some unblemished squads on the college gridiron are still cruising along nicely…. Others, it’s safe to say, did not on Saturday. Stanford paid a visit to Utah, which had been 0-2 in the Pac-12. Trailing by six, the Cardinal had first-and-10 inside the red zone with more than a minute left only to turn it over on downs and lose, 27-21. Oklahoma, meanwhile, faced a team whose coach was likely in a win-or-be-fired situation. The Sooners had won the last three installments of the Red River Rivalry—the last two by a combined score of 118-38. This time, though, Mack Brown and the Longhorns turned the tide and coasted to a 36-21 upset win. Stanford and Oklahoma are down to No. 13 and No. 18, respectively, in both the AP and USA Today rankings. Stanford is +450 to win the Pac-12 and +10000 to win the BCS National Championship.
Georgia Bulldogs. Georgia already had one loss, but its National Championship hopes were still very much alive. That was, of course, until the Dawgs could barely field an offense. They are missing their three best receivers (Malcolm Mitchell, Justin Scott-Wesley, and Michael Bennett) and their two best running backs (Todd Gurley and Keith Marshall). The injury woes caught up to UGA on Saturday, when it saw a 15-hame home winning streak come to end in the form of a 41-26 loss to Missouri. Georgia’s SEC aspirations are still realistic…but only if it gets some players back. It is +500 to win the SEC title.
Buffalo Sabres. Who knows if there is a hockey equivalent of Andrew Wiggins or Jadeveon Clowney, but the Sabres are sure playing like there is one. Through six games of the NHL season, they do not have a single win. A 0-5-1 record gives Buffalo just a single point in the standings, leaving it nine points out of first-place Toronto in the Atlantic Division. The Sabres have scored six goals despite being tied for first in the league in number of games played. No other team has notched fewer than eight goals. No team in the entire Pacific Division has lit the lamp fewer than 16 times. Buffalo is a +125 home underdog vs. the Minnesota Wild on Monday.
