Weekly Sports Betting Hot/Cold List
by Nolan Sinclair - Strike Point Sports - 2/28/2012
Is it just me or do we need to do away with all professional all-star games? It seems as though they just keep getting worse and worse. The NFL Pro Bowl is an absolute joke. The MLB All-Star Game is awful as the fans just continue to vote in guys like Derek Jeter. And as we saw on Sunday the NBA All-Star Game is just a bad pick-up game.
(I truly like the way the NHL all-stars draft their teams. But even those guys score 10-12 goals each.)
Since the NBA version of this mess is on my mind I have decided to give my opinion on what would improve it:
First, the celebrity game should mandate that at least three players on the floor have to be drunk. Second, the dunk contest should not have a winner. That way the superstars would come and showcase their talent. Just make it a timed event with no winner. Just let them dunk, like freestyle.
Third, both the Rising Stars Game and the regular All-Star Game should go by the way of old school Rock n’ Jock, and have 10-point circles and metal rims that are 25-feet above the court.
Finally, if these games are going to continue to be a circus, we need to get that tightrope guy from Madonna’s half-time show to just bounce around on that rope for the whole game.
Here is this week’s version of Doc’s Sports Hot/Cold List:
THE COLD LIST
10. Major League Baseball And Steroids – What a mess this Ryan Braun thing has become. Did they really mess up this badly? On one hand, who is still dumb enough to be taking steroids in baseball? On the other hand, did he really do it? What a debacle.
9. Dennis LaRue And The Home Team – NHL teams are just 20-36 with LaRue blowing the whistle. LaRue is one of only two NHL officials (with at least 10 games) that have their home teams average less goals than the away teams. We have “homer” but do we have an “awayer”?
8. NBA Home Favorites – Over the last 30 days NBA home favorites are 20 games under .500 against the spread. On the flip side they are 94-52 straight up. Looks like home court advantage wins games but doesn’t seem to be scoring at the window.
7. NCAA Away Favorites – The youngsters that are favored on the road are not the cool kids. Over the last seven days away chalk is 29-48-7 ATS, which is good for a paltry 37.7 percent winning percentage.
6. New York Knicks Vs. The Total – Wait, isn’t Mike D’Antoni an offensive coach? The Knicks are 10-25 versus the total the first half of the year, including six of their last sevengoing ‘under’. Now that New York is fully healthy and they have a steady point guard we could find some value with the Knicks and the ‘over’.
5. Villanova Wildcats – Don’t get me wrong, I am a huge Jay Wright fan. But, good Lord, The Wildcats are a gross 6-18 ATS on the season. This season record includes a current 0-7-1 ATS streak over their last eight games.
4. NBA Southeast Division – The Southeast Division is not the division you want to look toward when wagering your hard earned cash. The Southeast is a combined 75-92 ATS. Orlando and Miami are over .500 ATS, barely, but Washington and Charlotte have combined to be 23 games under .500 ATS.
3. L.A. Kings Vs. The Total – The L.A. Kings could quite possibly have the worst O/U record I have seen in a long time. The Kings are just 13-35 versus the total on the year. I know it has a lot to do with their No. 3-ranked defense, but how have the oddsmakers not caught up to this?
2. St. Louis Rams – The Rams have decided to trade the No. 2 pick in the draft (RGIII). Their asking price is going to be in the ballpark of two picks between Round 1 and Round 3 or something of equal value. But they just need to make sure they take care of Sam Bradford through this draft, and I haven’t heard a plan for that yet.
1. LeBron James – Seriously dude. Shoot the basketball. I don’t care if it was the All-Star Game. If you want to be considered the best you have to take that shot in the NBA Finals, or out in the park with your entourage.
THE HOT LIST
10. Milwaukee Brewers – This one is easy. Their life would have been miserable without Prince Fielder and Ryan Braun. At least now the latter will be there for the entire season. This Pabst is for you, Milwaukee.
9. Sacramento – The city got to keep their Kings. I have always enjoyed watching a game in Sactown, whether it is on TV or in person. I am glad that they got to keep their team. Sacramento is 17-16 ATS on the season after they covered their last three before the break. The Kings could be a sneaky play following their restful weekend.
8. Steve Kozari And The ‘Over’ – NHL games go over the total 65 percent of the time when Steve Kozari officiates. The over is 34-18 in his games with teams combining to score 5.9 goals-a-game.
7. Futbol Club of Barcelona – FCB is 6-1-1 over their last seven matches, including a 3-1 win over Bayer Leverkusen in their Champions League tilt. If you decide to watch soccer, this would be the team to watch.
6. Tennessee Vols – The Volunteers are both 6-1 SU and ATS over their last seven games. Tennessee won outright as a 13-point dog at Florida. At 16-13 they will need to make an amazing SEC Tournament run to get into the NCAAs, but they are definitely hot at the right time.
5. Robert Griffin III – After his 4.31, 4.35, 4.41, 4.45, or whatever the hell he ran at the combine, teams are going to break the bank for his services.
4. Phoenix Coyotes – Phoenix is on fire, with a touch of lucky on its side. The Coyotes have won nine of their last 10 games. During this streak they have won two games in overtime and three games by shootout. Their only loss was a 2-1 shootout at Vancouver.
3. Michigan State – Tom Izzo and Co. have firmly planted themselves on the top rung of the NCAA Tournament seeding ladder. And they are cashing at the window. Sparty has covered six of their last seven games, including three in a row on the road (at Ohio State and at Purdue in a blowout).
2. Kevin Durant – Yes, Kevin, you do deserve to be there. And yes, you are one of the best scorers we have seen in a long, long time. Oh, Portland, I am so, so, sorry you passed on his services.
